View Full Version : DISCOVERY 3 REPLACEMENT BATTERY

The main starting battery on my 2005 Disco 3 died the other day which created a bit of a dilema. None of the Battery Fitment Guides on the net or at the battery retailers list a Disco 3. I went to a place that had previously been a Land Rover dealer and they contacted their supplier and got a battery in for me. Alas a different size. I checked all the forums and could not find any information. I was beginning to think that i was the first person to look for a replacement battery for a Disco 3.

I tried a number of different makes and models but the size of the battery and the fact that it has recessed posts made it hard to find an equivalent. I wanted a battery that was close to the 825 cca, RC 190 mins factory fitted battery.

The Original Land Rover Part was priced at $350 but my 'local' dealer was unable to find any in the country. I found a Varta battery that seemed to be the same size but was quoted $545 from Battery World for that.

After a bit of hunting and I found a Century Battery online that seem to be the same dimensions as the original and was close to the rating of the original (735 cca, RC 165 mins). The Century website called it a DIN 92 LMF but my local Century Battery Supplier (Tyrepower) contact the warehouse and they have it recorded as a DIN 95. Either way it was $240 and the external dimensions were an exact match.

When i fitted the battery I found that the posts were a little further away from the edge of the battery and therefore the positive lead would not fit as it has the fuse that normally hangs over the side of the battery.

A quick chop and another $5 battery terminal and all is well again under the bonnet of my Disco 3.

Hopefully this will help anyone else who finds the same problem as me.

Good work LG......looks like the bolt connecting the two clamps could be a fraction longer to make better use of the nyloc nut.

Is this a calcium cell product ?
The site only specifies a European vehicle .........
Did Federal not have Varta 950cca available ?

It could but that was all i had in the shed. I didn't think the nyloc was really necessary as i didn't think there would be any forces trying to undo it..

Hi discos_galore, I’m not sure where you are or how close an LR dealer is to you but my wife’s D3 cranking battery died about 4 months back and I got a new one through the dealer for $185 and they fitted the new battery while I waited.

I am 200k's from my nearest dealer but they are normally excellent in sourcing bits for me. They told me they couldn't find any in the dealer network.

Hi there,
My battery on my 2000 TD5 died after 8 years of service. One morning it would not crank the engine, just like that!
I phoned the NRMA and and explained the positions of the terminals.
Within the hour they brought out a selection of 4 battery's that they thought might fit. One was correct and it was fitted on the spot.
I paid $185 with a cheque, and was on my way to do the shopping.
Now that's what I call " Service ". It pays to belong.....:)

That would have been fine if i had a TD5 because that's the sort of battery they were trying to sell me, but I sold the TD5 to get the Disco 3. You sure you dont have NRMA interest somewhere?????

Thanks for the feedback, I wondered weather a standard battery for a TD5 Discovery is totally different to a battery for your car (discovery 3) 3 terminals, a handle on the bottom ? It makes me wonder just what one does when the battery pack on a Toyota Prius run out and need replacement? would the NRMA come to the rescue? and BTW I am just a satisfied NRMA customer and not assistant CEO or even the tea lady, if I was I would probably be driving a Morgan Aero sport,

Discos Galore,
I got an Amaron Pro battery, perfect fit and loads of amps, and about $250 which I thought was quite reasonable. They come out of India, I've had them before they seem to last the distance as well. Maintenance free of course. Hope that helps.

Hey Nomad, I don't suppose you have a model number at all? My starting battery (supercharge) has clapped out after only 7 months!

I have a yellow top D34 as the deep cycle but would be interested to find another semi deep cycle to use as the starter & feed the fridge for those extended times...

Cheers

Thought I'd update this thread as I had to get a new battery for the D3 this week. $312 from my local dealer for a 950 CCA rebadged Varta which looks the same as the one i'm replacing. Part Number LR030213
The Varta badged 850 CCA was about $360 on the net from federal batteries

Can you tell me the brand of the rebadged Varta. Our original Varta was replaced with a Bond battery which is conveniently dying just outside of warranty so I would prefer to go back to the original or similar.
Thanks

LR have changed to a rebadged AGM battery made by exide

BH42-10655-BA

It seems the varta calcium types were not up,to the task.

Slightly less CCA and Ah. 850/90

Dealer price in Melbourne was $500 !!!!

Sorry mate, I haven't had to consider it since I bought mine, Ironically the old one is still doing sterling duty in the tractor starting a 5.2 litre diesel.......
I'd give Paul at Lennock spare parts a call and see what this weeks price is though for a genuine unit before I went chasing an aftermarket unit. Call Lennock and ask for spare parts. Beware of any answers you get from anyone except Paul as I ordered a couple of sway bar bushes last week, and got a call from the bloke relieving to tell me that the rubber I had ordered was there, rang Paul the next day when he was back and got him to order the other one......

I agree - in Canberra always give him a call first as it may save a bit of running around. He has years of experience in Landies (used to work in spare parts at the old Morwood Motors (landie specialist).

He is down to earth and provides good advice and within the constraints of the dealer network provides great pricing - he is the cheapest place to get the correct brake fluid for D3s etc but freely admits he cannot compete with ZF on the price of ATF fluid.

Pete - just be wary of the Battery Factory in Fyshwick just around the corner from you - they have lots of well priced batteries but worked hard to sell me a 60ah, 550cca battery when I made an enquiry a while back. They dismissed me and my requirement for a battery around 95Ah and 950CCa as being overkill and that I didn't know what I was on about - however they do carry the right batteries - just do your homework first.

I didn't get a battery in the end - my 7 year old original battery is still running ok but may die this winter if it gets very cold.

Guys,

battery in my TDV6 D3 MY08 is showing signs it may be about to die.

Any idea where in Brisbane is best place to try for a battery to suit? I'd prefer to go with LR approved type if possible. The Varta that is in it shows some corrosion around -ve terminal.

I guess I can always call the dealer and MR and see what they say. Dealer is right beside where I work in the Valley actually.

Just rang them, they said it is a LR003179 and is $700 WTF!!!! I googled this part number and it is a bracket of some sort. ppffftttttt

Got to be cheaper options.

Just a suggestion, the varta that I replaced was a bit corroded on one terminal. After a clean up was working fine, since I had the new battery I replaced it anyway but that battery is still doing fine in the tractor nearly 2 years later, might be worth your while to pull it and clean the terminals before you spend the dollars on a new battery.

It is with sadness that I report the death of the original battery from my D3. Not a bad innings, 2008 D3 and 5 years starting the tractor. It would have been just on 9 years old as the D3 was delivered March 2008.

Yes mine lasted 9 years and was still going but was throwing up too many codes - making the rear suspension go down at night, on start at night only one headlamp would come on. As long as I let the glow plug light go out it still started first go.

On testing at the battery shop it was still up at 13v and held voltage on load so seemed Ok but when put on the CCA tester it was down to 300 CCA.

The new battery made all the issues go away but will not last as long as the original fitted at the factory. They were a great unit.
