Sydney to Wagga Wagga, overnight at Hay.
Hay to Balranald to Murray Bridge through to Adelaide.
Could do it in 17-18hrs straight if you are really keen.

Major flooding in the Culgoa and and Moonie river systems in Queensland is expected to cause minor to moderate flooding along the Barwon Darling River from mid March onwards into April.
Wilcannia - Reach minor flood level (9 metres) early May - Possible further rises possible if the Paroo overflow reaches the Darling River
Don't think it will be a problem for a trip to Adelaide, but there's lots of possibles :D

It may be advisable to book accommodation sooner than later - motels, ... get very busy around Easter.

Fly :D
The shortest may be in km's but not in time.
You are travelling at easter.
Peak time of year.
Truckies doing last run etc and streets are mayhem, extra road patrols and fuel price be up.
May I suggest also to fly, it be cheaper, less exposure to potential accidents and there in under 2hrs.

Fly with a scheduled airline - clearly the most economic and safest way to travel at that time :)

Thanks everyone!
Fly is v sensible but then it's not a road trip..and they're good for the soul if not the wallet!
Looks like it's going to be via Wagga to Hey (thanks Warren)
If we get stuck in floods I'll post the photos!!
cheers

The quickest/most convenient route depends on where in Adelaide you want to go. If to the northerrn part, it may be quicker to travel from Hay through Balranald, then through Mildura and into Adelaide through Gawler.
If you want to go to the city itself or the southern side, turn off the main drag just before Balranald, to go through Ouyen and Pinnaroo to Tailem Bend and then via the freeway into Adelaide. This is by far the easiest route in to the city and the south side, and we find it is much quicker than via the northern route. It usually takes us around 14 hours driving from Canberra without the van.

Quick but with an overnight stop?? What's the go there??
I did Sydney-Adelaide in 13hrs in 2003......
........in a Morris Minor.
My tip:
Turn left before Balranald & go through Tooleybuc (as above). Then you cut across the top of Vic & into SA. Through Murray Bridge & then onto Adelaide.

This is the way I always went when I lived in Adelaide...
An easy 14 hour drive at legal speeds with fuel stops and 1 meal break.

I think we are all agreed on the best route, we are just using different towns to describe it. But just to clarify, you don't go through Murray Bridge: the freeway bypasses it. Tailem Bend is the last town you actually go through before Adelaide.

Thanks all.
We're going to north end of Adelaide, and it looks like the gauntlets down for a 13 hour run!! - which means we can skip the overnight stop by leaving at dawn
