Given the chance I will shoot the idiot who designed RRC mudflaps

I found one of my rear mudflaps on my 92 was cracked across the top a few days ago. OK went to Supercrap and bought a pair of 4X4 mudflaps. ( this was a PITA as they had "4X4" on them . I thought "only paint so I will just wipe it off". Noooo, the 4X4 is Raised and this was not visible through the package.)

Then the fun started.

The rear mudflaps are retained by some weird type of super large "rivet" ( squeezed on to a ribbed shaft that looks like a thread but isn't)which obviously is connected before the whole assembly incuding the rear part of the inner guard is connected to the car. I tried unscrewing, I tried tapping with a persuader.
Then I tried an angle grinder but too many sparks and not enough room.

So out with the Dremel and a couple of reinforced cutoff wheels. These quickly wore down so it was then a 45minute return trip to Bunnings to buy new ones. While there I bought some galvanised 6x20MM nuts and bolts.

So if you want to change the mudflaps , you will need a Dremel and reinforced cut off wheels. Do not try with the normal Dremel wheels as they explode most spectacularly. It underlines what a great tool a Dremel is. Looks like a toy but is so useful.

Jeez they make it hard and for what reason?
The rest was easy. Just trim the new flaps and drill the correct holes to suit the RRC mounts.

I replaced the mud flaps on my '89 a few years ago, I bought aftermarket (but same design as the originals).
I had the same problem with the rivets on mine, could not work out why they would make it so hard to get them off.
After scratching my head for awhile I ended up drilling the center of the rivets out and they came off quite easily with a whack from a hammer and punch.
I replaced the bolts with galvanised as well, never had a problem with them since.
I was told the rivets were like that as an anti theft measure.
Maybe there was a spate of serial mudflap stealers in the UK? :)

The moral is this..

if it breaks off then it shouldn;t have been there in the first place.. leave it off.

A bit like the ends on the Disco rear bumper.

The front ones are the same. The part that the flaps are rivetted to unbolts relativly easily then the rivets are easier to deal with on the workbench. They are still a real PITA though

When I replaced my rear mudflaps I cut the old one off (one side was gone completely already anyway) and then cut upwards with a hacksaw through the remaining rubber to cut the bolt/rivet things in half. The metal was so soft that it must have only taken a few seconds to cut through them. Easy as. I replaced them with really big conveyor belt flaps.

No spray control is a defect if factory fitted. I know for a fact that no rear mudflaps is a fail on the NT rego inspection.

The problem is that all you'se guys want the modern RRc mudflaps. All the well made models had the mudflaps held on with nuts and bolts. It's only on the cheapie late ones where the mudflap fixings were designed by accountants.

:) Had to replace the rears on mine the other day and somebody had already doen the hard work for me result. Three bolts on each, bit of wonder spray easy as...
No front ones looks like they got ripped off, need to check if required or not here in WA...

The early 2 doors and the poverty pack never had the front ones fitted. By phase 2 (1985) the PovPack could be identified by the manual wind windows.

Front ones have never been legally required.

I was reading something on the Cooper site a while ago and apparently the tread chipping you and I get on the rear tyres is due to stones thrown from the front tyres. I was thinking of adding a mud flap in front of the rear tyres to reduce it. I have already fitted a small one to stop the body mount from filling with mud.

Doh! It's not that hard!!!!
The easy way to get the front ones off is to carelessly reverse park against a high curb in Balmain...this will neatly remove it and reveal the rust behind that used to be the footwell....:eek:

I only posted it because I always thought chipping was from the extra drive on the back ripping bits off on rocks. My BFG KOs were badly chipped.
I know Coopers have had a lot of FLAK/bad press on this and they spent a lot of time with cameras etc finding out the real reason.
