View Full Version : Show us your Pumas
LR D4
6th March 2010, 01:47 PM
From another thread the Mac family came up with what I thought was a good idea so I will kick it off....SHOW US YOUR PUMAs...... Quoted by the Mac family ( Would also like to see the owners of Pumas have a pic thread of their defenders.Would help potential Puma owners decide on which colour, new accessories and show us old fender drivers what we are missing out on but don't get me wrong I LOVE my old fender and all landys. )

Had mine since 2007 and it is still in mostly original condition. I have this peculiar theory that you don't bolt anything on to a vehicle unless you need it... And so far mine does everything I need it to as is. Here's a bunch of old-ish photos...

What is all this show us your puma, are you guys getting alittle bit disco and superior or what. next you want be waving to the older defers. there was already a show us your defer section. :p :p :wasntme:
Iam to blame for this I asked in another thread for the Puma owners to start a Puma only thread and LR09WA was kind enouph to start it
I must admit, I didn't think there were enough external differences to warrant a new thread.
Well seeing as Disco section has sub forums one could argue that the 90 110 130 Defender County section could/should have sub forums not that iam complaining.:D
I think the Puma owners would also like another thread where they can compare/discuss about there defenders and not get crapped on about all the faults of the new Puma.
After all the new Puma comes from a long line of great landys the series,county,200tdi/300tdi and td5 which all had faults just my 2 cents worth after all Landy drivers should all stick together and give crap to Toyota's Nissans ect ect :D
Sorry for the hy-jack back on topic :)

Whats that got to do with this thread??? if there not waving then maybe there blind... Whats wrong with a sub section for the Puma??? Why do some people hate it so much? Like any thread if you dont agree with its content then dont participate, i would not slag off a Defender 300, 200 s1 s3 s2 101 etc thread, there all Land Rovers in the end and, and should be all supported.

Pictures aren't great Kenleyfred but they are good enough. You second picture (from the top) shows your tow bar. What brand is it? I am in the market for a tow bar but most that I have see would would pass for a plough at the back end.
dullbird
14th March 2010, 05:18 PM
You in the UK karl??
Only reason I ask is I can't say I have come across any ploughs here in OZ for defenders,, only ploughs I have seen have been in the UK
Genuine tow packs and hayman reece recover hitches are the popular ones here
KarlB
14th March 2010, 05:47 PM
G'day dullbird
I'm actually in Canberra. I am in the process of getting a new Defender (hope to pick it up next week) and the only thing offered by the dealer was the Mullti-height Tow Bar (PN LR006309 - http://assets.config.landrover.com/lr/gb/l316/accoly_gb_l316_lr006309.jpg?11wy). The Hayman Reece one is OK but I am looking for something that minimises the loss of departure angle. Maybe I'm too fussy or haven't looked hard enough.
dullbird
14th March 2010, 06:02 PM
Karl befor we go any further you getting a 110 or 130 if your getting a 110 a hayman reece or genuine will be the only way to go and your not going to get anything better unless you fit somthing direct to the crossmember which I really would not reccomend. The departure angle on a 110 is crap anyway and I would far rather a tow bar there taking the brunt of the rough than my fuel tank
KarlB
14th March 2010, 06:15 PM
Neither dullbird, getting a 90; and realise that may be problematic at least in the short term.
dullbird
14th March 2010, 06:24 PM
Even so I would still get hayman... I have a 90 to with a dixon and bates but that hangs down more than a hayman...
A mate if mine also had a hayman on his 90 with no issues and he wasn't frightened of using his so unless your talking really extreme..
Make sure you post your pics when you get it in here!!
KarlB
14th March 2010, 07:16 PM
Thanks for the advice dullbird, I'll look seriously at the Hayman. Maybe I can live with out one?
dullbird
14th March 2010, 07:31 PM
Thanks for the advice dullbird, I'll look seriously at the Hayman. Maybe I can live with out one?
Possibly but what would you do for recovery.
Why don't you start a thread asking about tow bar options etc,, just try searching before you do as there was a thread not that long ago.
KarlB
14th March 2010, 07:56 PM
Ah dullbird, getting in to murky territory with rear recovery. Any of the tow bars are rated at max 3.5 tonnes and even moderate snatching can generate an equivalent load of ~8 tonnes or more. Would like to use jate rings in the rear but now that the chasis at the lashing-eye attachment point is not reinforced then this is not an option. Do you know if any one has strengthened their chasis at this point to enable safe use of jate rings? I image it is a relatively simple welding job for some one who knows how to do such structural welds.
kenleyfred
14th March 2010, 08:18 PM
Karl it's an ARB bar. Having said that I chose their bar because it is compatible with the long range tank. They have come back to me and said that the bar is incorrect as not compatible and to wait while they sort correct bar. Still waiting. Don't like my chances. Still when I go for the long range tank they will have to sort it.
Dullbird thanks for sorting my last photos, sorry they turned out so crap, there are a few things there that I quite like, like the rear and side working lights.

Karl, the 08MY 110 was only available with a LR bar much like the Hayman Reece made in Australia for the Puma 110.
LR would not bring in the drop plate assembly available to the UK. Now that the range has increased with the 90 and other variations of the 110 I suspect the available UK accessories has as well.
The towbar part number for the 90 is different to the 110 (LR006310) in the UK so I suspect that the LR Aust towbar 110 wont fit and nor will the ARB unit fit unless ARB has previously made one for the 90 when it was last imported back in about 2003-2005.

Its the only place the ladder can go with this type of rack, and it helps alot getting up there, to sort the tent out. Not sure if any one makes something different......

as i was thinking, not realy sensable to have it off the back and block the tail gate. and if you have a roof rack that is used you must have a ladder. as i said i cant think of anything better.

I would guess that is my HCPU of which you are enquiring (series 3 put up the photo from my link).
Seating position (I am barely 6foot and not overly big built (87kg)) would not be described as spacious, however, having spent years suffering a sore lower back whenever I drove my T*y*t* H*l*x for any distance and blaming it on age or the seating position of my bike (clip on handlebars), I have come to realise the upright position of the Defender is probably akin to being treated by the worlds best chiropractor - I drive the defender long distances on road and it has cured any sore back issues I have ever had. :BigThumb::BigThumb::BigThumb:
The vehicle in general - fabulous, as long as you never need more than 2 seats (I never do:cool:)

Bingo - I'm a bit over 6 foot and around 95kg and a Deefer is the most comfy thing I've ever driven - I can sit behind the wheel for hours and hours with virtually no discomfort.

Here is mine then, its a 10MY all I have added so far is the bull bar, renovating the house is eating all my money and she wont increase my allowance.. Thank god I got the corporate pack and servicing is included.. Going to get some HID spots soon as I have convinced her that they are essential. But if the tax man is kind to me then maybe a few more goodies.
I am commuting from the gold coast to Brisbane so putting on the K's he will hit 30k next week and is only 6 months old. going to have to start taking the train or the warranty will be out before I use him for a pleasure trip.

All they got done was added the Mulgo seat extensions (If I slide them right back I can barely touch the pedals now) and add the sliders.
Monday week it goes in for 2 days for bar, lights, twin battery's, traxide upgrade, HD Track rods and sump guard.

Hi Patclan,
How do you find the Puma for the commute to vegas and back?
I do the same commute and thinking of replacing the D2V8 with the Puma 110 and this daily commute was my only concern for comfort reasons (noise mainly). Obviously know the fuel consumption would be 100 times better.
Thanks and great looking truck!

Hey Baz
We love it for the commute, noise is not an issue or maybe we are just used to it, we can have a conversation easy or most mornings listen to the radio no problem.
It is very comfortable, do it every day and no sore back or anything, much comfier than the train.
Plenty of power so no problems keeping up with the traffic, the speed restrictor is our only hold back sometimes :)
Driving a D2 you will be used to the driving position but again its great, gives you the advantage to see what lane to change into way before you grind to a stop. Have also found that people move out your way in the fast lane when they see you coming.. dont know why...
We get around 600k per tank (standard tank), not sure if this is normal but I am probably not an ecnomical driver..
Parking is an issue but there are a couple of car parks we can fit in, 201 charlotte st I use, $19 a day on early bird.
Hope that helps, any other questions let me know..

Cheers,
I had the stickers made up by a local company $20 for the pair plus a couple of extras 'just in case'. Every previous model of Defer has had the engine name on the side so I figured why not mine? :D
As for the name, I'm not sure why we call this model Defender 'Puma' and the Poms describe it as the '07 onwards or TDCi model'.

Cheers :D, the bloke made'em as a once off thing, so no online ordering (I assume), although I will check to see if I can get more made and have'em sent out to anyone who's interested. Or give you the contact details of the company and you can ask yourself if you like.

Finaly got my side steps, was in no rush as money is tight as always for car extras. But my parents are over from the UK to visit, my Mum is 5'0 and my Dad not much taller, getting in to the defender has been a real issue for them so I bit the bullet and spent the money. TJM ones with the bush bars, $850, an extra $150 to install them, looking at them now I could have probably have done it myself but took them 3 hours this morning and he said it was not easy..
Pics should be attached, not sure about the colour of the plate, I like it but maybe would have prefered black, will see.
