I remember years ago at Cape Patterson, Vic. The army decided they would go over the egde and down the bottom of the dunes, pick up a big rock with a crane on the back of a LandRover and get it back up to the top. They loaded the rock ok and started to winch and drive the LR back up. With the LR in low it proceeded to dig itself in, even with the winch on the top pulling. Then a senior sort of voice said "turn that bloody engine off". They did and then it was winched up the hill ok.

Or "Make sure the tool you use is not the driver!"

Aah, Youtube . . . what better way to waste time and get an education all at once.
I don't think you could outdo this mob. They make pretty much every mistake in the book: YouTube- VERY professional kinetic rope snatch recovery

That one made me shut me eyes. OMG :eek2:
Last time I saw two snatch straps joined by a D-shackle I hid behind the biggest tree I could find. They should only be joined by looping them inside each other (then use rolled up newspaper or a stick to stop them jamming together).
Love the "Watch owt for tow ball com't trew back window" comment. :o
Snatch strap should have warnings - "DON'T JOIN TWO STRAPS WITH A SHACKLE".

A snapped winch cable and a snatch strap and they still didn't keep clear!

I could barely watch at some points, I even felt sick at one stage.
Then I started reading some of the comments - here's one from the guy who did the snatching...
"Also, You can hear the camera man repeatedly telling people to stand clear, although as we saw they whip inline with the vehicles so as long as your a good few car lengths away. The other bonus of using towballs is that they tend to stretch the bolts until the rope will no longer stay on . Anything with a shackle and you end up with a deadly weapon if it breaks off the vehicle. I didnt like putting the shackle in the middle but I thought I needed the length to pull from the flat"
I'm speechless as to the towball stretching part... :o

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb as dog ****. Will say, i once saw a supposedly qualified instructor with a well known japanese branded 4x4 club attach a winch cable to a dead tree on a steepish hill and commence to winch, yes the inevitable happened nearly dropping it on a kid standing nearby.

The most frightening aspect about the episode, is they think it is all a big joke. It hasn't occurred to them how close that was to a tragedy.
On second thoughts, the most frightening thing about that was I don't believe they learnt anything.
I hope their luck holds for everyone else's sake !

Two years ago I had a detached retina. Whilst I was waiting to be assessed at Sydney Eye Hospital, there was a bloke there who was also requiring surgery - he had been hit in the eye with a snapped cable on a construction site.

I'm thinking a light tug with a snatch strap is all that's needed ...and that's what they finally do.

I was hoping the cameraman would just shut up! At least one can turn down the volume.
I find the lack of the word "the" in his speech to be extremely annoying. I've noticed it in other Brit stuff - is is a regional dialect?

Hi
I agree with Zute, Dont think it will be too long before they make the Darwin awards. This might be for the best as I think the Gene pool would be better off without Tom and Co.

I like this recovery. The recovery truck is powered by a 3.9 litre Cummins 4BT, about as close to the mighty Isuzu 4BD1T as you can get :D
