Anyone on here know much about these, my brother's always liked the look of them and ones come up for sale nearby which he is seriously contemplating. They look pretty solid but are they mechanically reliable? Do they use the same thirsty V6 that's in the Freelander? Was there ever an upgrade model?

I've heard that they're had to get parts for, impossible for some bits.

I had one for a fortnight when i was in Sydney many years ago as i knew the importer.
They are a wonderful vehicle to drive & extremely comfy, Did everything the European vehicles did:D.....BUT
Same 2.5Ltr KV6 engine as the Freelander 1, also have the same problems as the Freelander 1. Overheating, Engines, Gearboxes, Driveshafts, Throttle bodies making noise etc.:(:(
Personally i would save my money and buy something different.;)
Just my thoughts...

Rarity and upmarket status, I bet they don't move through the yards as quick as a Falcadore.
Volvo and Mercs are the same, taxis in much of Europe.

I know two people that have them and both have been faultless, the only gripe they have is they cannot buy a new ones. Pat

The person I know who had one loved it too, their only gripe being the parts and proper servicing issue.

Selling for that price or for sale at that price? Two completely different things... :p

I really like them, and its sad to see what rover (aka BMW) could produce before it went belly up.
A really lovely shape with a nice nice interior. Lots of fun bits. A bit cramped for room (more of design than overall cubic inches issues), and some of the add-ons such as the wing mirrors look a bi plasticky for my mind, but overall a quality car.
1.8 petrol gutless and blows head gaskets, 2 l diesel breaks it clutch a lot (Is this just the diesel? seems like it but logical?) and the 2.5 V6 is the pick. I think they're pretty reliable generally, the friday cars would have fallen to bits by now.
But, overall, they are a bit of a grandpas car, nice for turning up to the bowling club in.

G'day Traco :)
He would be better off looking seriously at a TD4 Freelander, than the Rover sedan, better known and probably better for service in this country, or look at a Volvo,Pug,or VW.

I was considering the MG zt version, same body but firmer suspension and big wheels, sporty interior etc. Produced in China now I think. The thing that holds me back is the unknown resale in future. I think a lot of Australians don't trust euro cars in general - only Toyota.
Europeans appear to not do high mileages in their cars before they flog them off. Could be that the rust gets to them from salty roads.

The link below might give you some info on the car from a UK point of view.
Used Rover 75 Saloon Car Review - Full Review - What Car? (http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/used/rover/75-saloon/full-review/23525-2)
Also remember the Rover here is like a Holden in Australia in that any garage will have no trouble working on it and knowing the ins and outs of the problems and how to fix them.
When Rover went bust the supply of parts was not impacted as they had sold this part of the business off before it went bottom up.

Thats so true , you would be over 60 in the UK if you owned one of these, or
it would be a company car.

I thought the V8 and the MG V8 version with the Mustang V8 would have been the pick and not too many would have been driven by grandpa or parked outside bowling clubs.
As the Rover Marque is no longer being made I do not think one would be high on my list of purchases. It would have to be real cheap and came with a list of parts suppliers.

I think even the MG versions were driven by speed mad grandads, the Estate version was ok...

I have never owned one, I had a Morris Isis, but two of my old army mates had them and they were extremely solid. One rolled his twice just out of Broadmeadows and did no damage at all and no one hurt. Great car.

That's the Rover from 1875 Glen. The 75 was a slightly later model.

There seems to be some confusion there Numpty and Ian, the Rover 60 came out in about 53 and had the 2.25 litre engine that it shared with the Landy, whereas the good old 75 had a straight six. The body shells were the same (the P4) although there were a few exterior differences.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/03/1082.jpg
The 90, (above) came out a bit later and had a slightly larger capacity 6 cylinder engine.
The "Cyclops" front light always fascinated me in that Rover had it, Studebaker had a similar design flair as did one of the early Bristols, but it never seemed to quite catch on.
I remember fitting a radio antenna (optional equipment) to my mates Rover the same day as we fitted one to an FC Holden and the difference in the gauges of the metal were astonishing. The Holden was like tin foil in comparison!

Rover and Studebaker employed the same designer at different stages. I not sure, but I think he went from Studebaker to Rover.

IIRC, the first Rover 75 (cyclops) was infact the P3 and it came out on 1948. It has the 2.1lt 6cyl (OISE head) motor in it.

The P3 wasn't called a cyclops as it was just a Notek spot lamp mounted on the bumper.

That particular P3 has been in my family for nearly 30 years (was my father's) and he (and his bowling hat wearing mates in the Rover Car Club)always referred to them as a "cyclops"

Yes you can...well in China anyway...they bought the rights, except Ford (or was it BMW?) wouldn't sell them the Rover name.
So it is now called a Roewe 750. It has a 1.8Turbo - don't know the origin of than engine.

I read that these couldn't meet safety anywhere in the world. They were bad, even by Chinese standards.

G'day Folks :)
There is/was a Rover 75 on Bribie Island, about late 90's or early 2000's nice looking vehicle, but, service/parts for these is a tad hard to locate, also saw a 75 wagon down at Manheim Fowles Bris. yard a few months ago, going by the customs/shipping stickers on it was a recent import. nice but a little bit squishy.
Those Rover sedans from the 50's/60's were the "Aunty Rover"s elegant motoring from the bygone era, smooth, silent, slow off the mark but motored nicely, the poor mans Bently, the choice of Doctors, Barristers, and Uni Professors.Loved that large floor mounted handbrake, and the suicide rear doors ;)
cheers

There is a silly program on foxtel called "Chop Shop". This eccentric Bangladeshi makes amazing cars. (not sure how safe they are but certainly look good)
He turned one of those Rover sedans (90?) from the 50's into a replica of a turbo jet powered car made back then. Even had an interesting segment with Spencer King who bagged the hell out of them
Amazing looking car.
