I need to obtain a blue slip in NSW which requires checking the engine number stamped on the block. The mechanic is unable to see it and is talking about taking parts off to find it. Any ideas of an easier way? The engine is a 2006 TDV6.

Engine number cannot be seen on the block unless you remove a lot of components or remove engine from vehicle.
LR for this reason have placed a plate on top of the L/H/S of the engine.
(Or Passenger side of vehicle)
Remove acoustic cover by unscrewing engine oil filler cap & remove cover upwards off its for retaining cupsockets.
It will be easily seen after this.

Thankyou, I knew their must be an easier way. I did suggest to the mechanic that it should be in another spot, and he told me that the number he needs cannot be on a plate. I certainly don't want to pay for a strip down of the engine to find an engine number.

The person who did the blue slip for my new D4 didn't think much of the tag under the engine cover, because he reckoned it could be tampered with. But he thought he was God too, being quite condescending about several other items.

I went through the same hassle re finding the engine number when I changed the rego on my D3 from NSW to VIC, the "Vicroads" guy couldn't find it and I had no idea where it was located - I searched the owners handbook from cover to cover with no luck - so I rang Lance Dixon and they told us where to find it....the guy at Vicroads wasn't too happy about a "plate" but eventually gave in and grumpily accepted it.....took my $2400 in stamp duty :o plus a few hundred more for plates etc and let me drive off into the sunset.

I too went through this when changing rego from ACT to NSW. The guy wasn't very happy about not seeing the number actually on the engine and it took a lot of convincing to get him to sign off on the Blue Slip (he was concerned if the RTA did a random inspection).
Sorry that I can't help.
