View Full Version : What brand 35" tyres should I fit ??

Hi guys, well some of you would know I have just bought a Rangie and I would like your advise on which 35" mud tyre you would recommend ?

I know this is up to the individuals preference but I would like to read your thoughts. I have very little experience with choosing a full on off raod tyre the wildest I have had would be Cooper STT's.

Bare in mind this will be a week end toy, not a daily driver.

Thanks in advance :D

If you want a good all-rounder, the Maxxis Bighorns are a good option. Good price, not too expensive and will do the job. Also the Maxxis Trepadores that a few of the members run are a great all-rounder (had a set, I sold them to Justin because I needed the $$$ and I had plans on using the bullet as a work vehicle but now that plan has gone to ****).

The usual big-priced brands are great as well but I personally don't like to buy super exxy tyres, I had 2 sets (one the BFG's and another the godyear MT/R's) and both had sidewall punctures and at nearly $400 a tyre I could have bought a cheaper option. Tyre size on a 16 inch rim for a 35 is a 315/75r16.

As Trav mentioned, a lot of people run the Maxxis stuff. I'm a big fan of the Mickey Thompsons, love my MTZ's. Great all round tyre thats dead quiet on the road and have great grip offroad. They also have a very strong side wall, and good side biters. Sure they cost a bit, but they are worth it I think.

Hey Noz if it was me i would buy maxxis trepadores best all round tyre ive ever used . Creepys are great just ask Grimace but being bias can be a real handfull on the road especially in the wet (think Justin had bit of a moment on his creepys once) and i know Greg has too..
There are plenty out there but but just dont think you can go past maxxis for value and performance.
I know Kelvin was pretty happy with his treps on the weekend..

Anyway this is just my opinion ..

Cheers Darren

How long is a piece of string?????

But ditto to the above, you cant go wrong with either the Trepador or the Bighorn. Up to you depending on the width you want. I have found the Trepadors to be an excelent value for money tyre. for a club car. Sure some other tyres are better etc but alround performance on & off road you cant go wrong with Maxxis

If you intend to drive to the venue and just drive, without changing tyres.
Stick to the Radial Ply Types.

I had a chance last year at Coffs to see nearly every brand of tyre preform on wet tracks of all types of soil.
I made a little survey of which brand of tyre had cleen treads at the top of each hill.

The worst preformer was the Goodyear Wrangler, which were mud donuts at the top of every hill.
Maxxis preformed well, but the stand out for mine was the Mickey Thompson Claws, they had cleen blocks at the top of every hill.

Check out Off Road Tire Guide for Mud and All Terrain Tires - Offroaders.com (http://www.offroaders.com/tech/AT-MT-Tires/) or talk to Greg.

Camo and I love our Mickey Thompson Claws and they perform well... have read reports about possible weaker sidewalls on them so the Maxxis Trepadors are the clear favourite, similar pattern, stronger sidewalls.

Got talk to Brett at AusTyre and tell him you're a club member (does great prices and sometimes better). Details are in our recommended suppliers section :)

Hey Mark,

If you are buying some 35's dont buy Bighorns. Im not saying they aren't a good tyre, but there are much better ones out there. In the same vein, Mickey Tompsons and so on I would also avoid.

As has been said Creepys are a Bias ply which even ignoring the size rules isnt legal in Qld, and despite Grimaces arguments otherwise, will be posssibly dubious on the road. They do work well off road though and I am quite impressed with them, so if that doesnt bother you could be a good option.

Treps seem good, although the only ones I have seen in use have been sticky compound 37's. I also dont think they would be very good in mud.

I would keep an eye on Outers and 4wd action and grab a second hand set of whatever comes up. Be it Simex, Swampers, Treps etc etc

Not cheap tyres I would think Trepador 35/75/16 $410.

Another Tyre shop recommendation is Ryan at Fourby's on Ipswich Rd in Moorooka 07 3892 2766. They occasionally have clearance specials etc which are fantastic. He is also an active member on Outerlimits.

When I was hunting on tyres for the Cape last year he was better on price than the shop recommended at the coast. Also better for me as they're quite close.

For that kind of money you could have Claws, not tyres from Taiwan

The other tyre that comes to my mind is the Procomp Xterain.
Both the Mickey Thompson and Procomp come out of the same factory, Coopers Tyres USA

I know they are out of fashion at the moment, but the best value off road tyre IMHO is still the Silverstone Sports, about $200 and a bit.

Gee Noz you know how to start long threads.

If looking between claws and treps (as assuming you are )... do some research in Outerlimits or Pirate 4x4 :)

Just remember you need an ALROUND tyre. Yes some tyres are good on rock ,some in mud etc some are crap on road. Yes My silvertone Extremes are Better than my Trepadors in mud, but the Trepadors are superb on rock and ON ROAD. Remember you have the wife and kids in the car as well.

Anyway your driving a RRC now of coarse the Defer and Disco guys are saying buy tractor tyres, they need them;););)

I had a set of 35x12.5R15 trepadore radials and I did like them very much, on-road they were good, off-road they do the job and overall a damn good tyre and would buy another set although now they'res a few people with them I may choose to buy different.

I try to advoid the 'big name' tyres, overpriced and overated most times. For touring they would be more my choice but for 'weekend warrior' trips the cheaper options are more than fine. From experience with the big name tyres, I had 2 sets (BFG and Goodyear) and both sets I staked the sidewall (not repairable, had one patched but I still had to buy a new tyre and use the repaied one as a spare)and at nearly $350-380 a tyre for a 33 inch that left a very sour taste in my mouth :mad::mad:

It comes down to what you can afford but the maxxis tyres are good value and you won't get too many 35 inch sizes for less than $400 a tyre these days. Whatever you buy you should consider all your off-road likes because it can get costly changing tyres if you are not happy with you choice.

Good luck with it.

Hey Mark,

You have made the right choice !!!!!!!:)
The Treps are just a plain excellent tyre all round.
Fantastic road ability and not noisy, very capable in rock and dirt and perform well in the mud.
They are a little on the expensive side, but you will get your moneys worth with the performance they provide.
Speaking from experience of course:p
I have the same tyres on Gumboot, just 15"
