View Full Version : Advice for P38 owners ....... get a bus pass !

I went to start the Rangie this morning and got the dreaded "Engine Disabled" message.
Unless you have your own diagnostic computer (Faultmate etc) this message may as well say "Call a Towtruck"
I did see it coming, a few mornings recently I have found the car has locked itself overnight (Its kept in a locked garage so I don't normally lock it)
Anyway, need to start on flushing out the electrical gremlins.
In the mean time, its dust off the bus pass...... YAY

nobody wants to reply...just in case they catch the same virus
i'm not concerned as, after app. 4mths., mine is still in 'push only mode' :(
it was all back together after an engine rebuild and some bolt ons, but missing at revs on the 2 back cylinders.
so it's back to standard to try and diagnose the fault....
all my mates with Cruisers keep whispering something about lemons :)
i've just gotta wait a little bit longer to blow them away

oh btw buy a faultmate ... best thing i ever did.

Possibly the EMS number in the BECM is not the same as that in the EFI ECU...(= the EMS).
Using Faultmate, note the "EMS" number on the BECM 'page' and the EMS number in the EFI (petrol) page. They need to be the same.
If they are not the same, the EFI ECU number is the correct one, you need to write this number in the BECM EMS field and save it to the BECM memory. Switch everything off and disconnect the faultmate. Try and start the engine...see what happens.
If this is not the issue then it may be the sensors...either crankshaft or camshaft. May need to back probe the leads to see if you're getting a pulse...
let's know what happens!

I love my FaultMate MSV-2 too Tasi ;) It has saved me heaps of grief and identified stuff that I screwed up myself.
One day when I can afford it, I'm gonna get me a multi-vehicle FaultMate so I can help with these "one-off wierdo" incidents for the princely sum of a "fair to medium" bottle of red. I get a half-decent discount from BBS now, so hopefully that day will not be too far off.
Dave - I get the same message on mine if I try to start the engine after the car has immobilised itself. It is normal AFAIK.
To fix: all I do is press the lock button on the remote with the key in the 2nd ignition position... and the message changes to "START ENGINE" and all is good.
If this is not "normal" for your car, perhaps the immobilisation settings have been altered in the BeCM? I guess you have already checked the obvious things like good earths, battery charge etc? Did you also get the spurious "Gearbox fault" message that is a dead giveaway for a drained battery?
Cheers, Paul.

i'll tell my mate , he was checking all the Earths and connections today and your suggestion may be a big help ... before panic sets in about buying a new BECM
thanks Hoges, much appreciated.

We finally found the culprit who left the note on LavisLane's Rangie a few months back? ;)

People who have never driven a P38 give themselves away all too easily.

I used to get that all the time in my Lada Niva - I learned to enjoy it after a while, had all the lada jokes etched on my brain. I'd always ask the mocker whether they'd ever actually owned or driven one - invariably it was 'no' and they'd just 'heard' about them or had a 'mate' with one. Fact is my Lada took me 11,000kms around Oz almost faultlessly. Just shows how quick people are to judge I guess.

Clearly you are a Range Rover fan. I am sorry to hear that your P38 has let you down.
Everybody here with any P38 experience will have felt the same pain at some stage.
However, I think I can speak for most people in saying that we try to stay positive and get help from each other in dealing with the issues.
Calling them a pile of rubbish is not constructive and will most likely not win any points around here.
My suggestion of getting a bus pass is a tongue in cheek way of saying my current issue has temporarily immobilised my car, but its the first time in nearly 50,000kms that I have been in this situation.
Anyway, if you still have your P38 and still have problems, then by all means we will be willing to help you sort them out.
If you are here to bag them out, then I doubt you will get much support.
Cheers
Dave

For my two bobs worth I'm also a proud owner of a Lada Niva Ute for owned from new for the last 17 years. Knew what I was getting into before I bought it And also have had every Lada joke under the sun. Except for its lack of power I would back it to go anywhere. Including 700 km round trips on weekends courting my now wife. Unfortunatly my Lada Niva ute ( poor mans Rangie ) has been relegated to Farm duties due to sever cancer.
I have just purchased a real Rangr Rover ( a P38) so I guess that will be what keeps me poor from now on. Yes I knew what faults it has but think the P38 ( Tyrendarra Tractor ) will suit my need.
