View Full Version : D2 wheel offset etc - paging Slunnie and other gurus

Hey all, just doing the maths on wheel offsets, now on my D1 I went for a -25 to get everything working right with only a 2-inch body lift and 50mm flares. Worked perfectly, no major scrubbing etc. Now I'm led to believe the factory offset is +30 for a D1 and +53 for a D2. Does this mean the D2 runs a wider track, mounting surface to mounting surface? If so my calculations tell me a +6 Procomp wheel will come close or a 0 Dynamic almost the same.
Enlighten me please :D

33mm D1/RRC/Defender
57mm P38A/D2
The offset is embossed on the rim.

I'm not sure about the classic rims, but Ron is on the money with the D2/P38 rim being +57mm offset. Although the D2 seems to run more positive offset, bear in mind that the axles are completely different and the D2 track is wider than a classic track because it has a longer axle (WMS-WMS).
+57mm means that the WMS is 57mm towards the outerface of the rim from the centreline, meaning that when the rim is mounted that it is brought in closer to the vehicle. Trends are heading to this type of offest for steering geometry reasons.
Many LR aftermarket rims seem to just run a Landcruiser offset (-12.5 to -25mm) or a Patrol offset (0mm).
To draw a comparison:
D2 with 0 offset rims will increase the track width by 114mm combines or 57mm per side.
D2 with +6 offset will increase the track width by 102mm or 51mm per side.
Based on your measurements of +30 offset for the D1
D1 with 0 offset rims will increase the track width by 60mm combines or 30mm per side.
D1 with +6 offset will increase the track width by 48mm or 24mm per side.

Sorry to cut in on your thread boxer, but slunnie, i am about to buy some sunnies for my D2 and i am running 33s on the rims, i was just wondering what sort of offset (if any) that i could get away with on them without having to cut the body (i have done the sills and bullbar thing though) the rims will be 16x8.

It'll probably depend on how much flex you get. I run standard offset and have been fine with 285 wides and 300 wides. I've seen one D2 with a heap of offset but it didnt look like it flexed much either. I've never run offset rims so I can really comment too much. I have however seen 255 wide on the Procomp (or whatever they are) 7" rims that were offset and they did work. Sorry, not a real lot of help.

I am getting some alloy rims from a company near Brisbane that are blanks, so they can machine to the offset you require.
I know that the 18x8J alloys on the D2 right now have a +57mm offset, however can anyone confirm that the 16x8J alloy and the 16x7J steel wheel have the same offset of +57mm.
Due to regs in qld you can only change offset by 25mm per side, so I am getting the new rims machined to a +32mm offset.

Yes, the offsets are the same for all of those rims.
Any pics CJT?

Thanks Slunnie,
I dont have the rims yet but here is a pic of them from the website, I also had a look at them yesterday at the caravan and tinnie show in Brisbane.
They are 16x7 alloys and are each load rated to 1400kg, they can do a PCD from 100 to 165.1 and borehole from 73.1 to 130mm they can also do an offset from 0 to +50mm.
As far as I can tell they are the only proper 4wd alloys for a Disco in Australia that arent based on a passenger car wheel. I believe the standard alloys on the disco are only rated to 940kg so I have no issues using these new alloys instead of steel wheels.
The company that makes these wheels is Allied wheels, however they are a wholesaler only so you need to order them through any of your local tyre shops.
