View Full Version : Fair value for 02 Extreme

Hi there
Have read Redbook and scoured car sales
I may have an opportunity to purcahse an 02 , 110 Extreme with 50,000kms on it.
It has LR tanks , 40 Ch UHF , Outback drawers system , a second spare , is only a 5 seat , has all the usual Extreme extras.
Redbook has them at 120,000km worth $ 19500
In one way the low kms are good but in another not so good because all the usual TD5 probs will not have surfaced and been repaired yet ; Fuel block split , radiator , Turbo mod valve , harmonic balancer falling apart , Top radiator hose plastic fitting prob , exhaust manifold probs , turbo inlet hose etc.
So how do you interpolate the Redbook data at 120,00km?
Or what do you think is a fair price for both of us. I don't want to offend with a silly offer.

Sounds reasonable to me.
I would have expected to pay more........ $23K - $25K

.

Not sure where you are getting your info on problems from.

Fuel block isn't necessarily an issue. Mine has done 110k now and never had an issue

Radiator - Not sure what you mean

turbo mod valve - as above? on a Defender?

Harmonic balancer - very rare. I would say no more likely than any other car on the road that has one.

Top hose plastic fitting - are you talking about the bleed screw. Ive never broken one and its about 1$ if you do.

Exhasut manifold - That is more common but again not for everyone. mine has never warped.

Delamination of intercooler hoses - could happen to anything. not especially common anyway.

The one thing that you more likely than anything will need to do at some point is the injector loom under the rocker cover. About $160 from LR.

As for the price, I would be suprised if you can get it for the book price or under. Maybe $22-25k

They aint that bad.

Sounds like a good vehicle with all that gear on it. It would be a real bargain for less than 25k.
Seems like you only hear about the td5 that have problems. Have a look around at the amount of Disco td5s driven by housewifes who dont know anything about them. Sure they probably have more problems than a toyota but they are a Land Rover and at least the accelerator pedal never jams on.

As above less than $25k for a TD5 with only 50.000klm's..that is an awesome price

I saw one in Sydney yesterday ( spit bridge ), grey extreme 110 TD5, no idea how many km's but it looked like it had never gone further off road than the kerb, $16k, damn fine price i thought...

Thanks for the quick responses:)
The TD 5 issues I mention are just what has been done to my 04 Disco TD5 over the last 3.5 years between 40,00kms and 158,00kms , the radiator being the most recent. Maybe doesn't apply to Fenders. The D2 has done a fair bit of off road work and does around 35,00kms a year in total , on/off road , as will the Fender. Vic mountains , Wonnangatta , Central Oz etc.
The fuel inj block was more a diesel smell than a mech prob. Maybe Fenders don't have the turbo modulator valve , the D2 is an auto:confused:
The seller is starting at approx $30k negot . I was thinking somewhere between $ 20k and $ 30k so $ 25 sounds about right:).
Spit bridge one for $16k
Sounds like what was offerred as a trade in.
Any more info please:)
Sydney inspect is a bit of a problem but can be overcome.
Thanks again

i paid 27k for a very good but standard (apart from LR tank and visor) 2002 xtreme with 110k on it. Over value yes... but few and far between over here... and was very well looked after... i have had the fuel pressure regulator go on the disco (couple of hundred bucks) plus the injector harness and modulator.. so far all small $$ issues.. doesnt put me off...
Defenders dont have the modulator, fuel press regulator can go or wont go... just down to luck and is still not far off the cost of a service item...
dont forget the oil pump bolt... :) apparently fixed.. but my 2002 disco wasnt so i got the deffer checked too...
most of the things you mention really are service type items.. as they are all lowish value things... that eventually wear and get replaced anyway...
if you can get it for the money... then you would be a fool not to! :)
dont forget the rules too.... if you buy it...

I know ... Pics
Not intending to bag out the Fenders.
just trying to identify risks in ownership.
I am after all thinking of going from an 04 D2 Classic to an 02 Fender
X-Treme :p just becauie I like the off road capability and look of the trad shape.
I have had a few series vehicles.

Have both like i have... best of both worlds then... and the excitement of not knowing whats going to go next... :D
I like the defender... love it infact ... but my god it makes the disco seem quiet and refined! i also like the handling of the disco... even without ace i can sling it around anything better than a 'p' plater in a skyline! the defender is a bit worse but still handles ok in my opinion... i think a poly bush set should tighten things up nicely too... and new shocks... and springs... and tyres... and... and...

That's like moving into a cave after living in a house.

I quite like my cave but at least it has AC that works :p;)

I wouldn't trust redbook. Seems to be a fairly consistent $7-10k off what it should be with defenders. From memory it said $17-20k for an 02 with 150-180k on the clock. That's the price I usually see 98's for with those k's.

I offloaded big red with 175K Km on the clock for $18K. In mostly stock trim with lots of post service spare parts.
I was aiming for more but crunch time came and thats what was on the table, it was that or take out an overhead on the house loan. $18K was more than the critical break even point but less than we'd like.
Typically 4 weeks after it sold we started getting phone calls on old ads that we'd forgotten to cancel offering the initial asking price.... One bloke offered $30K the buy it now price we'd initially put up on evil bay when we were testing the waters and could afford to be choosey. We got sniffs at the $25K mark but most were interstate. The day after we took the deposit for $18K we got an offer of $22K.

Steve , would love to have both but just bought a little 2 seater for the great handling stuff:cool:
The Disco has been great , very refined but I'm happy to do some noise proofing work etc to the X-Treme:)
Blk night, always the way mate , always the way , buying or selling, something better comes along just after you sealed the deal:eek:

From what I can tell all the valuation services don't get just how hard it is to actually get a Defender and factor that into the price.
My 05 Defender attracted at $37k trade-in by the local dealer  why buying my new Puma !!! And it's not like they made up for it on the Puma - I was given a discount of $2500 on that as a return customer.
He told me he'd have the trade-in sold within a week...
Admittedly my trade-in had low KMs and lots of bits, but it was certainly not a new vehicle.
If you can hold out, don't take the first offer you get.

The only thing that would concern me about this is that there were a few problems that were specific to the earlier models that I can think of. Many of them may have been solved by 02 though.
1. plastic head bolts.
2. oil pump retaining bolt (not a big deal).
3. i've heard of some of the early ones being prone to corrosion of the alloy panels. I've only heard of this on 99/00 models. I would imagine if it hasn't happened yet it's probably not something to worry about.
4. Now this might be worth checking... the earlier ones didn't have a flashable ECU which means you won't be able to power it up so easily.
I still reckon it would be a steal at that price though.:) While I'm normally a fan of Redbook pricing it does seem to struggle with defenders because the volumes are so low. Good ones usually change hands well above redbook price.

Mmmm
A mate used Glass' guide and came up with a value at $ 26500 considering age and low km's for the 50k one.
It has a few extras and my question is how do you put a depreciated value on those.
It has twin LR tanks , drawer system to rear , dual batteries , 40 CH UHF.
So now the asking is $ 29000

There's a 2003 with 120K km with Frontrunner rack, bar, snorkel, winch, cargo barrier, upgraded ECU, UHF, CD Player, Bilstein shocks in VIC for $29.5K on Carsales at the moment. A bit closer with a bit more fruit, but the high 20's seem to be where good examples are.
The problem with low volume cars and Redbook, is that a couple of wrecks sold cheap can bring down the average substantially.

I did see that one in country Vic for $ 29.5 with good bits fitted.
If we can't agree on a price for the low k one , that may be another option.

Country Vic one at $ 29.5k sold and delivered to someone near Shep today. The fella did answer his phone and was really helpful with some queries I had. It did go for the full
$ 29.5k.
Unfortunately the deal with the low km one is not going that well.
Seller was looking for $ 30-32k as he had seen some advertised at $ 35k private:eek:
Based on the Glass' guide I did offer $ 28000 and he said he would like a day or two to consider it , would I come up to $ 29000 , I did say no!
He rang today to say that the $ 28000 was no good and I said so can we do a deal at $ 29000 and the answer was no , he'd like to list it on the net and see what offers come in first.
Not very happy at the mo:(

You seen this one mate? A bit steep compared to that Country Vic one - that was a great deal assuming the car was in good nic.
I also wasn't a fan of the photos of the car on the beach of this one. Personal prefence but my cars stay as far away from the beach as possible. Hard considering I live at the beach though ;P

Yes , the detailing looked great but where are the winch and the snorkel and the X-Treme decals:eek: Is it a real X-Treme.
Also it looks like we might be close to doing a deal at $31k private for the one with 56,000km,s , twin LR tanks ( 120 l extra) , dual batteries , Outback drawer set , IPF driving lights , 2nd spare and tyre , 12 mths reg and a 10 stack cd player:o
May be a little steep , but where am I going to find another one with such low km's set up just how I need it ( except we could use 2 more seats when not doing trips)

Nearly there :)
Subject to a pre purch inspection , we've agreed at $ 31k which is possibly a bit steep but considering ; 56000km , FSH , 160 litres fuel storage , drawer set , twin batteries , roof rack , winch , snorkel , very very clean cond iside and out and the Country Vic one went for $ 30000 , it's probably not a bad deal.
Wish me luck ;)

I reckon if you get it you did well....
