Mmmmm

Get an 02 Fender X-Treme with 50,000kms for $ 25000 or an 02 X-Treme with 220,000kms for $ 16000

Am I going to spend $ 9000 in repairs on the 220k one and still end up outlaying $ 25000 for a 220,000km vehicle:eek:

Just thinking out loud

The answer to that depends on the condition of the higher mileage one. To go over the $9k would, I think, need serious engine problems (such as having been overheated) - but this could be the case as well with the lower mileage one. I think you need to get as much information as possible on the condition and history of each - if you don't know much about them, find someone who does to have a look, even if you have to pay them!

As John says condition and history are the most important thing.

Do they both have fsh?

What is the spec of them both?

Also what about when you sell? The 220k one will have done absoloutley loads whereas the 50k one wont so you should make up the difference.

I'd be considering the 50k one I think if its really nice and well looked after.

I'd take them on merit, the low millage one might have sat around alot and done small trips which isn't good for them, the high millage one could have done long trips to work each week and never missed a service so millage itself isn't the best indicator and $9000 buys alot of parts. Pat

providing the running gears reasonable, the suspensions all good and the chassis is straight and rust free ID go the 220K unit if you were prepared to drop say $3-4K of that on investigative work and preventative change outs the 220K unit would be a goer in my book.

Based on Blknights advice, you would then be paying $20k for the higher mielage Deefer. Not bad I would say.

But, based on the overall condition of the low mileage Deefer being what you would expect with 50K on the odo, and all services in a log book completed, I would glady pay the extra 5K for a motor and running gear with an additional 170,000k's potentially additional life.

Either way, you get your bum in a Deefer! :)

not quite... the $3-4K covers all the bits Id expect might want replacing or overhauling If its been looked after then you might well wind up only paying $500ish to remove the head, replace the gasket loctite a bolt here and there and inspect some stuff.

most of the things I'd be checking engine wise have the potential to let go on a vehicle thats anywhere from 20K Km on the clock all the way through to who knows how many K's on the clock.

Everything else on the 02 deefer is bullet proof anyway. well maybe not the front diff and half shafts.

Thanks guys.
The 220k owner sounds like a genuine bloke and is happy for his 3 service companies to give me the full goss on all work ever done:)
It is a one owner.
He is also happy to take it to a non LR ( but still well known ) service place and they will do a full report on it for me for $ 175.
Don't intend selling for a long time ( but as someone said , that's what we all say:)) so high milage and reselling isn't really a prob.
Other considerations are that it will be run as my work vehicle on car allowance. This creates a prob in getting finance for a 220k vehicle.
It does work out well however in that 'genuine' repairs are fully claimable wheras actually paying off the lower km unit is not.
All good food for thought.
Keep em coming and thanks for the help.
