Hello All,

I'm getting a 2.7L D4 in April https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/03/899.jpg , and I'm trying to budget fuel cost for the month. Roughly, how much does it cost to fill up a tank (diesel), and roughly how long your tank last with mostly city driving (at this point)?

Many thanks https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/03/900.jpg

$1.21/litre x the no. of litres in the tank.

What? Me engage in banter? :o

Never! :D

I would have thought working out the cost of filling the tank is readily calculated from the Disco specs and knowing the cost of fuel - so why ask the question?

$1.21/litre x the no. of litres in the tank.

beat me to the exact same response

but I would also have added that for any given vehicle take the ADR81/01 combined figure and add 15% for diesel and 20% for petrol and that will be close. Far too many variables to be any more precise than that.

The question is a bit bazaar.
Read label on window as to what car does in l/100.
See what the tank holds and you are on a pretty good path from there.

Say 11l/100. Tank holds say 90L. Thats roughly 800km's per tank.
Fuel is roughly $1.30 p/l. Tank cost $100 to fill.
Its a rough estimate and remember to never run out of fuel in diesels.;)
Oh and enjoy, nice car indeed.

Ok I'll see if I can give you bit of a better answer, but of course it will depend on the way you use the car. I have a D3 2.7TDV6. I tend to fill the car up once a fortnight and the average fill is probably between $70-90 depending on the cost of the fuel and how empty it is.

I drive about 5km each way to and from work and then do probably 2-3 40km round trips per fortnight for work, and then drive kids around to weekend sport etc on weekends. I tend to drive it fairly hard. currently the computer is saying I am getting 10.8 litres per 100km.

Misheemee,

Same AnD3rew, budget on about 2 fills a month at about $90 but this is assuming a hell of a lot about how you are going to use it, cost of fuel etc etc.

This forum is pretty gentle compared to most, however I agree with the sentiment of the other posts. This is something you could easily have worked out or at least put some more thought (detail) into the question before posting.

Either way enjoy the new D4 and hope you have budgetted enough for fuel.

I'm doing up a budget in preparation of my new D4 and trying to factor in a rough idea of a fuel expense, having never owned a truck/SUV and having never driven a diesel engine.

I do not have the vehicle yet, so cannot look at the specs on the sticker on the window. I don't know how many L the tank holds. I asked for a "general idea" and was simply looking for something similar to AnD3rew's response:

"Ok I'll see if I can give you bit of a better answer, but of course it will depend on the way you use the car. I have a D3 2.7TDV6. I tend to fill the car up once a fortnight and the average fill is probably between $70-90 depending on the cost of the fuel and how empty it is."

Sorry that my ignorance has offended.

Please don't take offence. Many people here are car experts and enthusiasts and assume others have the same level of knowledge, or know where to look for information such as the fuel tank capacity which is around 82L, say 75L usuable. Most of the specs can be found on Land Rover AU - Home (http://www.landrover.com.au), including the fuel consumption specs but those are always too optimistic in real-world conditions.

However, when we say fuel consumption is variable it really is, which is why you're not getting straight answers. I could tell you what mine is, but because my car and situation are different to yours that would be incorrect and it's better to give no information than mislead.

What I can say is that for most offroad touring purposes the D3 is somewhat short-legged, ie the distance you can drive it before refilling isn't quite as long as it should be. For around town purposes nobody finds it a problem.

I hope that helps.

Well, I need to apologise, Michelle, I just had a look at the e-brochure on the Land Rover site and I can't find a reference to the fuel tank capacity. :(

Actually, I stand corrected and disappointed. LR in their wisdom have banged on about all sorts of things on their website but not the specs of the vehicle including the fuel tank size. Fortunately, those can be found here:

:eek::eek::eek:

Please dont call it either of those

SUV is a stupid American phrase! Adopted by the gullible populous of a culture rapidly losing its identity to that of America.

It is what it is.. a 4 wheel drive wagon...

And a damn nice one at that! Congrats on your purchase!

I agree that a Landrover should not be called an SUV (why is everything thing that comes from the USA automatically fit for adoption here:confused::confused: BTW I still call bottoms bums (in polite company) not butts which are things that some people choose to suck on)
Apologies for the diagression....

Being a vehicle designed to carry goods D3/4 fits the definition of a truck albeit with a certain degree of style. And being of the finest English craftmanship they are certainly a cut above the usually lorry. I tend to characterise mine as a "Gentleman's Truck".;)

Have a good week everyone.

Cheers

Michelle,
Also take into account the first few thousand K's, the vehicle will be a little thirsty as the engine is still tight & will use slightly more fuel (couple of litres per 100/K) & as time goes buy & the engine loosens up the economy will come down.
HTH. :)

My 09 TDVSE tends to do about 700kms around town on about 80 litres of diesel - slightly more than 11 litres per 100km.
This is about $96.00 @ $1.21 per litre.
Mind you I am running Mud Terrains so they probably cost me some fuel consumption.

I have done one reasonable country trip & then the fuel consumption came down significantly - to about 8 litres per 100km.

Chuck

Everyone should bear in mind the fuel computers are generally optimistic. Best to manually work out the mileage a couple of times and then you know what % to add to the displayed figure.

I have done about 28,000 km since Nov 08. Driving mainly M4 and Parramatta Road with some longish holiday trips. Fuel consumption averages 11.3 (or there abouts) l/100km

I should mention this is based on km traveled and litres used. The computer seems to read around one l/100km less.

I am a new D4 and Landie owner, still learning about the vehicle. I have noticed at times the D4 will stay in 5th gear while cruising on the freeway, with an obvious increase in motor revs. ( and fuel used ) I haven't been able to peg under what conditions this occurs as yet. It certainly isn't a cold motor.
Using the command shift and going up a gear to 6th fixes the fuel use, but it begs the question ..why ....and is this something new for a D4 compared to the D3 ?

I too am shortly to be a 2.7 D4 owner and am looking forwards to doing the whole fuel thing. I expect to be able to comfortably beat the AS average. Current car, 3.0 outback, is averagein 9.6l/100km instead of the govt figure of 11.5.

Living in Canberra, I can got to/from work and only have to stop at a couple of sets of lights each way on a 25km trip, while averageing 75kmh (short 40/60 sections, short 100 section, mostly 80/90 travel withouth lights).

I'm also sure it SHOULD (magic escape word - should) use less fuel than a D3 in the real world based on the 140kg lighter weight and the 5 - 10% better aerodynamics (depending on which road test you read).

The govt figures are based on putting the car on rollers for a set period at 60 and 100 (5 and 10 mins I've been told) to 'simulate' driving. So, given the test figures for D3 and D4 are identical, I'd have to assume less in the real world.

As shor term anal retentive, I'll run a spread sheet for 3mths with every km travelled/fuel used/cost then get bored and stop.

I have done about 28,000 km since Nov 08.

That should be 38,000 km. the actual average is 11.21 l/100km, the best figure I got was 9.65l/100km from Dubbo back to Sydney.

After the 1st 600 kms today of mostly freeway driving my 3.0 D4 used an indicated 9.5 but a real 10.34 L/100km and its supposed to have lower consumption than the 2.7!

Graeme - it is still running in - consumption will decrease as it gets more kilometres on the motor. Compare after about 20,000km and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

On a recent trip from Bangor to Basinview - I got an indicated 7.8L/100km in my MY07 D3. Sure - that is by the optimistic trip computer, but for about 3t of mass - that is pretty impressive!

Back to the original question... it really depends on where you drive. If your drive means you can average about 80km/h, you will get better fuel economy than through traffic averaging 35km/h. When I drive to work at West Pennant Hills, I get about 11.5L/100km/h. Even then, it would depend on the time of day you travel! So lots of variables to answer this question correctly!

Good luck with your new toy Michelle!

Cheers,
Rob

I suspect its more of a function of the 110 kph constant speed in hilly terrain than the lack of run-in after 11K. Slower driving is definitely better for fuel economy but sometimes fuel economy isn't the highest priority criteria.

Consumption will definitely improve. I suspect there are very few D4s as of this time that are accurately reflecting their long-term consumption figures.

My brother has the 2009 RRS with a 2.7. He drives his car like he stole it, tows a 2.5T boat, and from my calulations from his fuel card dockets over 6 months gets about 10.9L/100km combined.

On the weekend he had travelled 750km and the trip computer said ha had 70km left in the tank. This was a mix of 3/4 highway and the rest city

Hope this helps
