Engine Oil?

Can someone point me in the right direction for Engine Oil (Grade/Brand etc) for Matilda please? (1957 2 litre Petrol)

For Australian use, 20W-50 is an appropriate grade. I cannot think of a good reason for using a single grade oil as originally specified, and they are hard to find anyway these days. Any oil you can buy will exceed the specification required for this engine, and there is little advantage in using a higher grade oil than is required unless you plan to increase the service interval, which I would not be in favour of. In any case, for typical use of Series 1 Landrovers, you will be changing it on time rather than use.

I would use any reputable brand of oil.

A word of caution, if the engine has never been run on modern high detergent oils, you should be aware of the possibility of mobilising a lot of gunk that has accumulated in the engine over the years. Keep an eye on the oil appearance and change if it looks dirty even if not indicated by mileage. In the worst case removing and cleaning the sump may be indicated.

After lead was removed from our petrol we had to manage the running of our old vehicles " lead-less ". Now a new threat is looming. The manufactures of Oils have progressively removed a vital component of oil called ZDDP (Zinc-Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate).
Modern engines can run oil with out this essential substance, but older engines cant. When you read the article, you will be relieved that there is a replacement available- (a ZDDP additive no less). First Flash lube and now ZDDP ! What will be next?
I am seriously thinking about converting my S1 landie to run on Treacle or even golden syrup. great for emergency survival breakdowns in the Simpson desert, just drain the sump......la la la :cool:

I haven't pulled down a IOEV engine yet, but the 2.25 engines have roller cam followers. This article said it would be a problem for engines with flat tappets.

I used to use Corse plus in my 351 Falcon ute and found it pretty good on old technology engines. Since BP have bought Castrol they are no longer making Corse plus so I am using Castrol Edge 25w-50 which I'm happy with. I'd also use this in a series motor without worries.

You can still get 30w single grade engine oil from caltex amongst others as it is specified by Briggs and stratton for use in their stationary engines.

The F-head engine has flat tappets, and they, or rather the camshaft, does wear - which is why the 2.25 introduced roller tappets!

Camshaft wear is why you need to be reasonably careful about oil changes (not so much oil type) for this engine.

Worth noting that the engine was designed in the late thirties, although it did not go into production until after the war, so its design is not dependent on the wartime advances in lubricants.
