I can buy a GME ELECTROPHONE TX3440 UHF at a competitive price - the one with all the controls in the mic/speaker. Any one using them - are they any good - any issues. It will be going in my 101 so clear speaker volume is very important if it is to be heard over the noise in the cab.

Thanks

Garry

I've got one and I think it's good, but I'm no expert with these things. I hid the unit in a roof console so I put an extension speaker (SPK07) right beside my ear on the headlining. I have the Mic. above the windscreen ,easy to see everything. When I unplug the mic. and put it away ,There's nothing for prying eyes to see except the antenna on the front. Don

I have one in my 90 which I would assume is no quieter than your 101!

It is pretty good. The speaker is fairly loud, but be aware that the speaker is in the main body so bear that in mind if you mount it too far out of the way. Mine is behind the drivers seat back, and I can hear it fine, although it is on a fairly high volume setting (full)

Ive had mine a couple of years or so now and it hasn't really given any real trouble. (apart from see below)

The fuse holder on the power cable is dreadful however. Bin that before even fiting it. I had to tape the connectors together on a trip after it failed for about the 3rd time.

Cheers

Glad you mentioned that - I thought it was also a speaker in the handset. I might have to rethink this then - maybe a remote speaker might be the go.

Thanks

Ok - what about the Icom IC-440. Icom says it has no speaker at all but this does not seem right. Anyone with the IC 440 who can set me and Icom right.

The Icom is only $40 more than the GME.

Thanks

the 3440 has also just been superceded by a 3340. There doesn't appear to be a lot of difference between the two apart from Digital Signal Processing technology which is claimed to give a clearer signal.

Based on the user manual there is no speaker in the microphone and if the main unit is well hidden a remote speaker may be required. pg 15

I can get the GME for $370 and the Icom for $410. Anyone seen them better than that and where?

Cheers

That seems good Garry.

Prestige communication Prestigecom UHF CB - GME UHF CB Radio (http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php'main_page=index&cPath=27&zenid=76f2f048ba65504bb96ee2c67820bc8f) are about the same. Thats where mine came from, and they are about as cheap as you will generally find.

Gary,
When you get your radio, get a remote speaker. If I remember right, they're not much. A remote speaker from an old mobile phone car kit should work fine.
I'm audibly challenged so I have mine up near the good ear.

I was looking at where to mount mine in the 101. I rekon here in the triangle between the roll bar and hood bow.

I'll be using worm drive hose clamps to hold the remote speaker bracket (the remote speaker attaches to the bracket of course).

regards
Mick

Thanks Mick - that is one of the reasons I want a radio with the speaker in the handset - I am thinking of going with the Icom.

have several icoms very good radios ic400 pro best of all but in a 101 most radios will need external speaker unless you mount the unit behind your head and full volume:D

Just looked at the ic440 on the icom site it has a .5 watt speaker in the mike and a 5w plug for external speaker if your 101 has roll bar like micks you could mount it on the bar right behind drivers seat easy to reach and hear would apply to other radios as well:D

Do you have a 12V DC supply in the 101?

My 101 has separate 12v and 24v systems - the Icom can also be run off either system.
