I currently have Bridgestone Desert Dueler M&S All Terrains [604V] in 205 x 16 currently fitted to My Rangie Classic. Wear is down to about 7mm all round in each tyre and I have been really pleased with them. The important thing I did want and did get from these tyres is their resistance to stone punctures on the Victorian fire tracks. I have never had one puncture which is great and which is also contrary to my experienced with any other four wheel drive tyre on any vehicle.
But I have noticed that with the recent rain wetting the tracks that the Rangie is not gripping on corners in the mud and is tending to slide side ways. This is due to the shoulder lugs becoming rounded due to bitumen driving and being unable to bite as they should. The last thing I want is an uncontrolled slide into the nearest gum tree or worse still to become airborne over the edge.
So I am thinking of replacing them prior to winter. I am looking at the All Terrain/Light Truck type patterns and my questions are this.
Good Year have their GT Wrangler TG in 205 x 16.
Has anyone had any consistent bush/stone track/trail experience of these tyres re puncture resistance?
Are they noisy on the black top?
Or does anyone have any other suggestions...........?
Thanks.

Thanks.

G'day Grumbles :)

I would suggest Michelin M & S 244, in 205 x 16 a standard fittment to Classic Rangies quiet, long wearing and a good AT pattern

I have a Wranglers in 235 x 15 on my 85, and they are OK for highway & dirt road use.

cheers

If you have no problems with Cooper tyres, I have them on in 235/75 16 LT in the AT range and think they are brilliant.
A couple of lugs have bitten the dust but so what, they grip, are quiet and wear well.

My mates KM2's on his patrol that I often refer to have lugs missing, are almost new and yes they do handle just as well and probably a atad better on rocks but I can not fault mine especially for what work you do and say you use them in.

Thanks guys.

Sadly - those Michelin M&S 244s are no longer made. They sounded good.

I've never worried much about tyres being long wearing either. I ditch them long before they get down to legal minimum tread depth. I do this because I work on the theory that 80% of a tyres problems occur in the last 30 percent of their life [good math isn't it but it works for me...lol]. So when around around 5mm or a little bit more of tread is left I usually get rid of them. This certainly causes some head shaking at the tyre fitters shop.

Tracks off a dozer indeed Richard.....lol - no - I don't drive hard but it doesn't take much for a muddy corner with some camber on it or a badly cambered track to bring you undone.

As for using my LSE ...... it spends a fair bit of its time with gun dog and rifle on board chasing a feed of sambar venison.:D

Or does anyone have any other suggestions...........?

After 25 years of being happy using BFG ATs, I was seduced by a mates price on a set of Bridgestone RD 694 in 245.70x16 for my 92 RRC.

I am very very happy with them.
I got them cheaper but bridgestone had a special on at $249 per tyre.

They are very quiet. They have good traction on dirt . They balanced well, and I have seen good reports on other forums.

The only negative I have is that they tend to grab small stones and throw them up noisily.
I note that their weird looking tread pattern is being adopted by more and more makers as I think it is this that makes them quiet.
