Slow updates on Tom Tom and Igo

I have got a Ranga special and I have to say it works great.

One of the issues is that both Tom Tom (the turn by turn I use) and Igo are slow to update position (seems to be about every 2 secs). Not an issue below about 50kph but at freeway speed you can actually be a few hundred meters ahead of the position shown on the GPS. Caused an issue the other day when Tom Tom said turn right but I had just past the street.

Oziexplorer has a menu that allows you to change update interval but I cannot find such settings in Tom Tom or Igo.

Any ideas?

The issue in in the Tom Tom and IGO settings rather than the unit.

With Tom Tom, mine updates at least twice a second. It may even be more than three times a second.

What did you set the baud rate to when you configured the GPS device within Tom Tom?

I saw 9600 recommended somewhere, so that is what I used.

I haven't had a chance to try a slower rate to see if that affects the update speed.

Resurrecting this thread.

Ok problem still exists but different - the Baud rate in Tom Tom is 9600.

Tom Tom now only updates every 9 secs so the display is always behind except at the update point. Igo and Oziexplorer are spot on.

I am now beginning to think that the issue in Tom Tom is not the GPS undating but simply the display only refreshing every 9 secs. The reason I say this is that I used the GPS in the car today where I can actually hear the commands (in the 101 where the GPS exists it is too noisy to hear GPS commands) and they are spot on where the display is a couple of hundred meters behind.

Any further ideas?

Don't use Tomtom? :p

I've noticed iGO8 run slowly when using the voices with TTS (Text to Speech, where it says the street names). Change it to a voice without TTS and it works fine.

Never seen Tomtom run slowly, so not sure about that one. Mind you, after years of using Tomtom on my PDA, I'm now converted to iGO8.

iGo8 works Ok - it is just that the maps are not as up to date as Tom Tom and it has issues with speed camera alerts etc. Also it does not display the information on the screen that I prefer - personal preferences I guess.

Tom Tom displays the information I need and its speed camera alerts and maps are very good - just this slow update is a pain. It did not do it when I first got the GPS so it is something I have done to it - despite searching I cannot find the necessary correcting menus.

I find Tom Tom is best in the town - Igo8 out on the open road and Ozi off road.

Well, there ya go...

I actually like iGo for town and country. Works well for me on the Ranga special.
The unit is now only used in my "run around" small car.

The Defender has the 7" unit with iGo and OziExplorer. Awesome.

in the settings for Tomtom - dial down any "detail" level settings to their basic. Also change that baud rate, I use 57,000 for my connections (From old serial port days)

Same with igo8 - btw - pm if you haven't found the most up to date maps & POI for igo8 - I have posted them\it in the main thread enough tho. ;)

Just an up date on this.

I use a 4gb sd card in the GPS (with Ozi Maps) and have kept the original 2gb SD card as my backup of the base GPS software etc.

It only just occurred to me that I did not have this 'go slow' problem when I first got the GPS and it has gotten worse over time so I slotted in the the back up sd card - guess what - works fine. Tom Tom updates three times a second instead of my usual once every 10 secs.

So I will format the 4gb SD card and reload everything and see what happens.
