G'Day everyone,

Well its around 4 months since I picked up my Landy and im still as happy as day 1.

At some point "he" was sold to a bloke called Ron.

I know this because the seller kindly wrote, on the roof liner in permanent marker and showing mastery of the English language, "Ron Price, Bort 9.9.204. (obviously this Landy can time travel) Pad cash" :D

Soo, the name stuck - from this day forth he shall be known as Ron!

Anyway, he's been a daily driver and also been on a few good 4x4 trips.
I ran out of fuel once but am yet to have any real mechanical problem. :)

Despite the fact that he hasnt stranded me there was work the needed doing, mainly preventative maintenance and tweaking.

Work done so far;

- Good cut and polish.
- Changed ALL oils, filters and fluids.
- Greased everything.
- Tuned engine. (clearances, timing, carby)
- Adjusted Steering Box and linkages.
- New tyres. (new wheelnuts while I was at it)
- Replaced front left brake cylinder, drum and pads.
- Clean and adjusted all other brakes.
- Replaced Selectro Seals.
- Cleaned and tidied Engine Bay (wiring still needs further tidy)
- Rebuild Carby.
- Replaced Manifold Gasket.
- Replaced Condenser, Dissy Cap and Rotor.
- Replaced Fan Belt.
- Replaced Water Pump.
- Replaced Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder.
- Added Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Water Temp and Tach gauges.
- Dynamat-ed cab. (work in progress)
- Tidied interior.
- Painted Grill.
- Replaced light lenses. (need to find large reverse lenses and replace gaskets)
- Removed erroneous wiring.

Work to be done;

- Speedo has stoppped working.
- Fuel guage inaccurate.
- Strip, clean and possible modfy leaf springs.
- New shocks.
- Fuel tank has small leak when very full.
- LHS Windscreen cracked.
- Roof, door, window and vent seals.
- Paint roof.
- Replace Door Windows sliders and repair minor rust.
- Upgrade Headlight wiring and add driving lights.
- Line rear cab with foam and material. (once weather proof)
- Rebuild gearbox. (not urgent, minor issues with gate and leaks small amount of oil)
- Complete sound insulation.
- Add racks.
- Paint rims.
- Replace crazy wing mirrors with door mounted side version. (!)
- Tons of minor things (bonnet missing one hinge rubber, bonnet stay missing split pin etc etc)

Yeah...its been a busy few months!
Luckily he is solid mechanically so I have the luxury of improving/fixing things when I want to, not when something breaks.

I will update the thread as I progress, in the meantime enjoy some pics.

Thanks to everyone who has offered me advice and help too, I would have been stuffed on many occasions without you! :TakeABow:

Cheers,
Ash

Nice ash....looks just like mine:)

I found the reverse lens on uk ebay (L691 from memory) replica for not much $$ - looks good.

I picked up a new speedo from PA Blanchard UK (http://www.pablanchard.co.uk/search.asp) - From memory it was about $120 delivered - probably less now the exchange rate is better. This fixed my fuel gauge issue too - There is a little voltage regulator on the back of the speedo that was stuffed. New speedo had a new regulator on it.

I have Defender mirrors on mine - they look (and work) great.

I would recommend a steering wheel cover from Pangolin 4x4 (http://www.pangolin4x4.com/)fitted mine yesterday and is great - I found the steering wheel got slippery when sweaty.
Ike is on here somewhere too.

Does the sound proofing work ok. Mine is a diesel and VERY NOISEY.:o

Cheers all!

Yeah those mirrors...what can I say. :D

Hey Paul I was looking at your car the other day, nice!
What are those Pangolin guys like to deal with?
They're in the US or.. ?
Have you got any plans for your racks?

Yes ours are sisters.;)

Ike from Pangolin was very helpful (I tipped him off to aulro and he turned up here last week) .The cover was promptly delivered. Yes they are in US.
Cost about $50 delivered. (although with the exchange rate that's probably dropped a little bit) Check out their site - drop him an email if your keen. Like I said very happy with mine. Not cheap but quality item IMHO.

I am not sure about racks - I am on my own most of the time, so a hardtop should have plenty of room. I don't like weight up top. I guess I wouldn;t mind a couple of Rhino type racks for long items and antennas but not a high priority for me.

I buy stuff from L. R. Series - specialists in land rover, land rover series and range rover - gearbox, axle, transmission parts, spares and major units (http://www.lrseries.com/) too. They are good to deal with in my experience.
Also Land Rover parts - Home (http://www.roverparts.com.au/home) have been helpful too.

How is the soundproofing? Does it make a difference?

Thanks for the info, appreciated.

Yeah the sound proofing has made a nice difference.

Even though its not finished it has cut down the high frequency noise by a huge amount, its a lot less "grating"

I would say, without a doubt, dont bother with anything but Dynamat.

It is bloody expensive but you get what you pay for.
Its much lighter than anything else I found, doesn't stink of rubber (or anything actually!), sticks like buggery and is very flexible.

I bought some cheaper stuff made by DNA too, absolute garbage.
Weighed a ton, stank like burning tyres and was larger ineffective.

Im starting the rear cab today, it will be done in closed cell foam and is to be covered in some kind of material...
Im open to suggestions for the kind of material too, im yet to choose.

Looking very good. Problem with hardtops like that is that they act as a giant soundbox. Insulation should make a major improvement.

Did you see the thread of the guy here restoring his 110? - he used mdf and shaped it to the roof. Looked great - I've forgotten, with all the wonderful machines, whose that was.:(

Thanks for the tip on the soundproofing - I might try some. (It's on the list:p)

MDF hey, didnt see that!
Do you know what his username is?

I started putting the foam in today, I had lots of interruptions unfortunately so didnt get too far...

I gave the roof a good clean down (can highly recommend the Autoglym interior shampoo, works great), painted the glue on the roof and the foam...then just tacked together.
I used a Bostik contact adhesive, powerful stuff!

Looks quite good I think, even just bare foam.
I reckon it will be too dark once the whole lot is done though so I plan to line the roof sections with a light coloured material to replicate the paint.

What sort of foam is that?

Here's the thread I mentioned.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/94919-expedition-home-build-au-ie.html

Interesting read - about page 5 before he starts on the interior.
Love the overhead console too.

looking good- nothin's worse than missus being woken early when condensation on unlined roof melts to dampen weekend.
I had a local trimmer cover my dash (whilst it was removed) 4 years back with vynal? for about $50 as a temp fix ,thats lasted well in sun 24/7,looks like new-he even filled a large hole somehow.
Also fitted defender type mirrors that work & look good, fold out of way easily.

Well a bit more progress on this insulation...its a very slow process.

What sort of foam is that?
Its a closed cell foam, very similar to the stuff builders put in brick joins to prevent expansion cracks.
I got 6mtrs of it (way more than I need) for $50, its 2mtrs wide!

A couple of observations/conclusions;

- Bostik contact adhesive is the only way to go.
I tried this Selleys gel product, it worked fine but just didn't go very far and was expensive.

- If I were to do it again I would have taken the roof off.

- Don't try to cut the side panels in one piece, it is basically impossible.
I ended up using 5 sections.

Hey all

Just thought id give a progress report on the beast.
Been a while since ive been able to do anything thanks to freezing cold weather and short days....ahh winter.

Ive knocked a couple of things off the "to do" list while also dealing with new problems that arose.

I have;

- Painted the roof.
- Replaced rear wheel cylinders and shoes.
- Replaced rear wheel bearings and seals. (started to leak oil)
- Replaced carb with brand new one.
- Solved tuning issues. (vac advance was jammed)
- Fitted new exhaust.
- Replaced bonnet hinge bushes. (what an effort!)
- Replaced engine mounts.

All up its going great, im especially happy with the new carb and exhaust - they've made a big difference to the way it runs.
I had the exhaust run down the side to eliminate the low snag prone pipe I previously had.

I need to replace the brake master cylinder next and maybe the vac booster.

I also bought a '67 2A for parts.
Too rough to restore really but has lots of useful bits on it.

Until next time!

Hey all

Its been a while since I updated this thread!
There have been no major changes to the old girl for a while, really just maintenance tasks.

This weekend however, I have a job..
Rocky Mountain parabolic kit!!
I will update this over the weekend. ;)

Thanks mate.
Nah ill have to pass, ones enough for me. ;-)

Well I got the rear done!
Its a pretty easy job but still a real pain in the proverbial.

Looks good so far and is MUCH softer.

Well finally its time for a proper update on changes I have made.

- Obviously the parabolic kit has been the big change.
Pretty happy but been stuffed about by being sent the wrong u-bolts (not enough thread).
I have also got some odds "clunks" which I think mean that new chassis bushes are required..:(

- I put a stereo in, using a marine kit.

- Ive ditched the crazy mirrors and got some pretty nice Datsun jobs, brand new and $5 from my local "dump shop"

- Fitted some spotties.

- Painted the rear badge. (turned out well I think!)

- Routed the exhaust out the side.
I need to make a heat shield though as the under seat box gets very hot, something to be aware of if anyone else takes this option.

- Replaced windscreens and resealed.

He's coming along anyway.. :D
