Things are getting interesting here on Hamilton Island. Latest tracking of the cyclone has the eye passing over us tomorrow morning, sometime after 0500. The Airport is closed (apart from us of course:eek:) ie no ATC, no aircraft on the ground or flying and no ferry traffic either. Both Jetscare and Virgin have cancelled all movements over the weekend, so it will be a quiet place. Austar will get a workout no doubt.;) Is a little windy at the moment but no moreso than it has been for the past week and the rain has eased off.

Everything is battened down on the Island awaiting natures pleasure. I shall update this over the next couple of days if at all possible.

I am near Hay Point and it is starting to get a bit interesting now. This is the 2nd cyclone I have been through and I wouldn"t say it is a storm in a teacup. The unknown factor is the biggest worry. They can predict a lot these days but until it actually hits no one knows what can happen. You can prepare to the best of your ability but if your neighbour or someone further down the road doesn't then their debris can cause the destruction of your house/shed. So you sort of rely on everyone else doing the right thing. Latest forecast shows it landing just north of here as a cat 2 or maybe 3 so I anticipate strong gusts up to 175k when it does and heavy rainfall up to 200mm. Thankfully it has gone down from a cat 5/4 like it was earlier in the week. I have spent the last 2 days preparing and am going to relax a bit now and just wait for it to happen. Time for a rum or two I think......Brian

Sit tight guys. Hope you all stay safe. I've been through (or near!) a couple of cyclones - was living just north of Bundy in '92 when Fran came through; and was living in Townsville when poor ol' Innisfail got smashed by Larry a few years ago. Not fun. But by the same token, there was a part of me that found it a bit exciting...

I'm supposed to by flying into Mackay for work on Tuesday, so we'll see how that goes.

Julian.

Update.

Spent the night at the Conference Centre on Hamilton, where they housed and fed about 100 from "the more at risk" accomodation. Back at work by 1100 this morning. Lost the sails from over our accomodation and the roof off the Fire Station. All the rooms at the FS are wet through so will be an interesting couple of days cleaning up.

Ului was nearly upgraded to 4 when it hit the Island.

Luckily I fly back home on Wednesday.

Hope all is well. I hope the wind was not as strong as the wind you let go in my boat out on Chaffey Dam. That took the paint off the Quincruiser.

Something to do, at long last, to fill in those lazy hazy days of sitting around in a Hawaiian shirt sipping Pina Coladas, waiting for something exciting to happen to justify the job!
That should brighten your day a bit Perry.
Good to hear that you are all safe and well though.
Regards
Glen

Sounds like it would have been 'interesting',

highest average (over 10 min) was 172kph and highest gust 202kph around 1am

Recorded at the Hamilton AWS, how far is that from the FS ? (I'm guessing not far).

We are back on the air this morning. Power back on last night.
Lost all the frozen meat and veg in two freezer's.
Bit of water damage to carpets under under sliding glass windows.
Some damage to tree's here even tho we were ninety K from the eye.
Tree's were laying right over when I looked out at 6-30 am
The Chicken thought it was great fun, when wind gusts came howling thru, she would say " Wow "

My Bro is at Seaforth and suffered panel damage to the Fairlane, fortunately the P38 is in Sydney.

Till next time.

How bad it is the problem with the melioidosis?

Well we all survived. I havent heard of any fatalities or serious injuries as a result of the winds/damage. We still dont have any power where I live near Hay Point. Hopefully within the next couple of days. Only got our phones and internet back on today. Power has been off since about 10pm Saturday night and we have a 3.5kva generator running since then supplying power for the fridge, freezer, 1 fan and a couple of lights. There was a lot of trees uprooted in the area and quite a few of them fell over power lines. I had a big ironbark in my front yard which got blown down and took out the power lines when it went. The frustrating thing is that it has been raining a fair bit of the time since Sunday and just getting time to clear the fallen trees from our yard is proving to be a bit of a battle. We have had a fair bit of rain this month and the ground was sodden ( main reason so many trees came down) before Elui hit, its still too wet to get the rover and trailer down the back of the yard to clear the debris. I have been cutting it up with the chainsaw and then dragging it to the front of the yard where I can load it and take to the dump. It looks like it should be starting to clear later today so hopefully might get dried out a bit over the next few days. Apparently Ului was bordering on a cat 4 when it hit which explains why the winds were so destructive.
