View Full Version : Defender Clutch Noise

I have noticed lately that the clutch pedal is getting a little stiffer and when it warms up there is a definite loud squeek when you depress the clutch. The clutch itself seems fine. It does not slip and gear selection is fine both going up and down the gears. I have checked the fluid level and it was down a little but there are no leaks anywhere that I can see.
I am looking at putting in a new clutch as I am going up The Cape in June and a look at the logbooks that came with the Red Terror a 200 Tdi Fender does not show a clutch replacement. It has 233,000 on the clock.
Any advice or information would be greatfully accepted

could be pivot pins in peddle need lubricating/ cleaning or replacing- remove access (to front of master cylinder -plate with 6x screws) and lubricate with wd40 or similar and see if this improves things
Wouldn't do clutch unless it's not functioning properly

A squirt of heavy grade oil on the clutch pedal pivots will help.

I'd definately be suspicious of the clutch fork about to break through at the pivot after a) the 233,000km and b) the stiff noisy pedal. I'd be replacing the clutch with a 130 spec Valeo kit, and a new fork and spigot bush. Britpart make a reinforced heavy duty fork now for these. Machine the flywheel, and I would be tempted to replace the slave cylinder also. If the fluid looks filthy, then do both cylinders. They aren't too expensive at all as the master cyl is a 3/4" bore trailer cylinder, about $55 odd. (Try and get a 'Girling' branded one)
This way, you can forget about clutch issues for another 233,000km :) :)

seconded, I also suggest spraying on some telfon lube onto the slide that the throwout bearing slides on and letting that setup properly prior to reassembling the clutch.
we had one siezed on on a perentie this week.
