Hi All,

I take delivery of a D4 2.7 with 18" rims in May.

I wish to fit AT tyres from the get go rather than the Goodyear Wrangler highway tyres delivered on the vehicle.

A tyre dealer attached to a LR dealership in Perth has the two choices available at standard/recommended 255/60 R18 size.

1.. General Grabber AT2

2.. ContCrossContact AT

I would appreciate any comments regarding wear rate, reliability, durability and on/off road capability for the above tyres.

Thanks very much

Hi Agro

There are endless threads here on this topic...... I have just fitted the Contis to my D3 (18 inch rims) and am very happy, but have not had them very long.

Have a look at these threads

D3/D4 doesn't matter, the arguments levelled in these threads apply as you have chosen the 18 inch rims.... for me, the conti's are the go

AGRO,

A very popular topic, if you search through this forum there is lots of commentary regarding 18 inch tyres for D3's and D4's. As you have until May you have plenty of time.

In addition to the ones you mentioned the other ATR tyres that from my recollection appear to be made in the same size at the OEM are;

Pirrelli Scorpion ATR;

Goodyear make a Geolander (i think) in the right size;

Cooper also make an 18 inch ATR slightly bigger but as I understand it still within the legal limits.

There are also some MTZ tyres discussed if these interest you.

Goodyear also make a Silent Armour All Terrain in 265 x 60 x 18 which is
10mm wider & 15mm bigger in diameter.
These tyres should be legal in all states.
They have a 109 load rating which I believe is with in D3 specs.

Hi Agro

I had the Conti's fitted to my White D4 when i picked it up first week in Feb.

I haven't done anything extreme so to speak as yet but been to stockton beach and for a cruise from the wombeyon caves to the Jenolen caves and they are great tyres as far as i can tell. A small amount of road noise but i can live with that.

Cheers

Anyone have any experience with Pirelli Scorpions ATR 19 x255x 55 in the scrub?

I've had my R18's on for 15,000k. Plenty of off road work, very happy with them.

As with John H, I am interested to know more about the 19" Pirelli's. Is the tread much more agressive than the standard 19" tyre fitted? Keen to hear some feedback

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to check out numerous tires, tread patterns etc and one of the things that looks interesting about the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's is, and this sounds counter intuitive but the tread does not look that aggressive for an ATR.

IMHO it would then be reasonable to assume that they are relatively quiet on road (for a ATR) but would probably suffer slightly off road verse some of the more aggressive ATR tread patterns. This is purely speculation based on no fact or personal experience.

However as the majority of my driving is on road, with the occasional off road foray they could be a good compromise.

Again supposition and assumption based only on (a possibly flawed) logic.

We had several D4's and RRS's offroad over the weekend, all on 19" tyres, so had a good opportunity to compare them. The Pirelli ATR was suprisingly competent on the loose, gravelly hill and rock climbs and brilliant in the sand. We didn't have the chance to test it in mud, but I suspect it would clog up a little earlier than say a BFG AT.

Cheers,

Gordon

My D4 has 19" Pirelli ATRs with 12K mostly on sealed roads but some daily gravel use including some badly rutted sections where the sidewalls get marked. I don't hear any road noise above the wind noise from the A pillar. They have been surprisingly good in surface mud but need some power applied to make them dig to prevent sideways slippage on bends. I'm still waiting to see if the sidewalls are any better than most other brands for this size. Although I generally try to look after my tyres, I don't treat them with kid gloves especially these as I want to find out how they might stand-up to off-road abuse whilst not in a remote area. I don't consider the LT version that I have on my D2 give a worthwhile comparison.

I can back both of the last two posts re the 19" Pirelli's - I've had them on my D4 since new (almost 13 k ago) and have to say I'm very happy. Having been one of the "test" vehicles referred to by Gordon I completely concur with his assessment of their performance - I was pleasantly surprised how well they went off-road, despite the not-so-aggressive tread pattern. How well the lower side-walls would stand up in sharp stones or mallee-root country is another question, but for general all-round on and off road use they appear to be mighty fine. No road noise that I can hear either.

In mud? Dunno - did get bogged in the one mud-hole I entered, but then I'd only had the vehicle a couple of weeks and had no idea how to fly it properly! And once you know how to twiddle all those dials to the right settings at the right time this is the most extraordinarily capable piece of machinery...:D

Caravan+RV issue 015 Feb/Mar 2010 had an article by Pat Callinan on the Canning Stock Route, they had three vehicles in their convoy and to quote Pat "We shod our three expedition vehicles with Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyres and returned on exactly the same tyres as we left with" what more is there to say, I've ordered the same tyres for my D4 (hard to get though)
This might help

I bought GGAT2's from that Perth dealer and they are excellent atger some serious off road driving incluidng two Red Centre trips (Oodndatta track etc). Very quiet on road. Slightly more prone to sidewall chipping - but I'm being picky here.

I've been chasing 19" at's for three years. Only ones I've found are Goodyear MTR's really noisy & not for general use. Michelin had one in Eastern Europe, ok to run on low pressures but no one locally knows anything about it. Pirelli ATR seems the best option & feedback is good for an allround tyre. Continental aren't producing the Cross Contact AT in the forseeable future that would be ideal. But given the current options I'm going with the Pirelli ATR. Pat Callinan gave them a good rap. Interestingly they are hard to find & I've had prices from $450 - $595. In the USA they retail at $US 245, How's that make you feel.

I have the Pirelli ATR on my RRS, in 255/55/19 size as it's not available in the 255/50. They start with 9mm of tread and after 25,000 miles they're only down to 7mm.

Yes, I'd agree that it's not a very aggressive looking tyre ( has a look of a Pirelli P6000 road car tyre) but in my experiences to date, the only time I've got properly stuck was in very heavy clayey mud and part of that was my own fault. I've also used it on some rocky tracks in mid wales and not suffered any cut tyres or damage. I use it offroad quite a bit with work on pipeline spreads, so stripped land which is often pretty greasy and not yet had an issue, but its predominant usage is road work and as a road tyre they're superb, excellent grip in all weathers and made it through the snow this winter with them no trouble. Unlike most AT tyres I've not noticed a drop off in fuel economy either, which being a 4.4 petrol V8 I was expecting to take a hit in that respect.

They're expensive but from my persepctive, well worth it.

I just found the web address for a Michelin AT 255.55.19. So far not available in Australia but looks like a tyre well worth chasing up. For your info.
