I know it's a tough one but I'm hoping someone on here can help me out. If you travelled up Oxide st., past the picture theatre and then turned left into Argent st (say heading towards Wilcannia), What was the name of the next pub on the left after Woodsons hardware (maybe on the corner of Argent and Iodide streets but not 100% sure) ?. The West Darling pub was on the corner of Oxide and Argent. Mum asked me last night and it's not because dad's gone missing again :wasntme:. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Anthony.

There's 2 in Oxide St
Mulga Hill at 264 and Tydvil Hotel at 318.
Mulga Hill is on the corner of the Barrier Hwy and Oxide St.
BTW Broken Hill had a lot more pubs in the 70s compared to now.

Aint that the truth !!!. Thats probably why I can't find it on google. The one I'm chasing was in Argent st. Last time I was out there was in '83 and I was surprised at the amount of butcher shops that had turned into video shops. God knows what they'd be now.

If you can wait until Friday, I can probably get the answer - I have a visitor arriving Friday who has lived all his life in Broken Hill.

That would be marvellous as this is doing my head in. I've got a fuzzy memory of what it was like inside and a bit better memory of what the outside looked like but I can't get a clear view of the place via google earth. If I told Mum the name it would click.
Cheers,
Anthony.

Lot of good pubs mentioned there:D
Other pubs on Argent Street - the Junction could be considered (although on a corner), the Palace, Criterion... lots of them.
It was considered a feat just to be standing after completing a pub-crawl of the Argent Street pubs.
And Oxide Street did have the Imperial, Royal and Southern Cross.
However, I believe the pub you are after was called the Barrier Arms (note: I'm not a 100 per cent sure - it was a long time ago) - but I'm sure it has gone to the great place in the sky for pubs - as indeed many of the other great pubs - for example the Pig an' Whistle:(

And here I was thinking that anyone who had a good time at the Pig an' Whistle would not be able to remember it:eek::eek:
Of course - that would be after you had spent several hours at the Sydney Club Hotel, fell into the Black Lion and then made it up the road to the Pig.

Mt Gipps was out of town on the Wilcannia/Cobar Road - a very popular pub on Friday nights ....and Saturday/Sunday arvo....but always an interesting trip back into town after session....roos etc.
Head towards Tibooburra and you had the Stephens Creek Hotel - run for many years by two rogues - Mooggy Sutton (Correct spelling) and Papa Joe McLennan.:D
Stephens Creek Pub was legendary amongst the locals:cool:

Stuck,
The pub along the barrier H/way past the old hardware store is over Iodide St and past the ABC building. It is the Willyama. I think there was another little one before Iodide St. Last time I looked that was an Indigenous health centre. Hope this jogs a memory.

Chris.

The Mt. Gipps pub was a little way out of town heading for Wilcannia. The people that had that in the very late 70's were awesome hosts. If you were a truckie staying over, they didn't have a kitchen but if you let them know you were staying the night, the publicans wife cooked an extra sitting for you of whatever they were having for a nominal cost. It's shut now as is Stephens Creek and Yanco Glen but did they still have the glass hanging from the light in the main bar that used to catch the drips.

Cheers for that Olfella,
The Barrier hwy is part of Williams st which runs straight or more or less is the Adelaide road. The Sydney to Adelaide regulars used to take a few shortcuts to get from Argent st to William st.
