All Disco's are constant 4x4.
There is no 2 x 4 function.
The centre diff is capable of being locked when required.
This is an excellent feature that most modern up market 4x4 have.

You can't is the simple answer if I understand the question correctly.
The Disco is a constant 4wd. The choices you have are to change the ratio (High or Low range) or lock the centre differential which locks the front axle to the rear axle to get you further in slippery conditions.

To convert my S3 Stage 1 to 2WD (it has an 81 RRC V8 & running gear), I have to get underneath with a couple of spanners, undo eight nuts, remove the driveshaft, redo the eight nuts and engage the centre diff difflock.
I do this whenever it gets dyno-tuned.
It is not recommended to drive if like this as part of your normal routine.
Having said that, I once drove it about 150km in this state with no ill effects.

Not a good idea to drive around on asphalt/bitumen with the centre diff locked.
However low range without centre diff lock is great for getting around in the yard with a trailer or slow speed precision driving.
BTW welcome to the forum.

There is never a daft or silly question - only silly answers.
As mentioned your vehicle is constant 4wd so there is no 2wd option. I guess you are a bit confused with the second gear leaver. Depending where it is moved it will lock the centre diff lock in the differential in the transfer case so that you have equal power going to front and rear wheels. This lever will also allow the selection of high or low range.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Not necessarily... the Ebay profile for "spaz_vella" shows he bought a Discovery indicator stalk the other day.
Don't you just love the internet - nothing's private anymore.
Welcome Spaz - and don't worry. You get used to this lot. :bangin:

George, you must have breadcrumbs under your "b" key, turn the keypad upside down and drop it on the desk, amazing how many crumbs will come out, Regards Frank.

No just a terminal Micrcarp keyboard and mouse.
To use b I have to go alt, 098. Arrow keys don't work and half the num pad don't work. Just swapped the mouse out. Not happy:mad:

G'day spaz_vella :)
As has been answered before, your Disco 1 (and ALL coil sprung Landrover/Range Rovers) are constant/permanent 4wheel drive, 80 rear 20 front,UNTIL the centre differential is locked, then it becomes 50/50 front rear drive, this constant 4 wheel drive was first introduced in the Range Rover in 1970, that is why it revolutionised the 4 wheel drive motor industry.
In these vehicles there is NO option to put into 2 wheel drive UNLESS you remove the front drive/tail shaft.
cheers
