Not sure about 89 model?

Have been offered an 89 model RRC for a very bargain price. I am pretty sure it is the first with the 3.9 and the Borg Warner viscous t/f. and zf auto. It runs well with no apparent problems, but don't have any real history on it. My question is, should I steer clear, have heard nasty stuff about the viscous set up, or snap it up and take the punt? Also, is the EFI on these early 3.9s ok or are they troublesome also?

89s are still 3.5 but will have the VC.

The VC is not a big issue if it fails - just fit an earlier manual locking transfer case.

the 3.9 came out in late 89. The Borg Warner transfer case is a good thing despite what some say. Mine is approaching 600.000 kms and works as it should, when it should.

My Dakar's a 1993 3.9 with 150,000 Km on the clock.
Engine's still sweet but we've just had to replace the VC.
It was slowly seizing over a couple of years. Finally it seized solid and went bang as it freed off on a tight turn. We ran it for some time after without any problems until we had time and cash to get it changed.

89 is a strange year, some are 3.5 some are 3.9, you may find the 3.9 will chew more fuel though.
Strange I know.
The VC is loved by some hated by others, fact is it works well when working like many things. Its not mechanical so its a liquid that works and locks up.My mate does swear by it and is now putting a 3.6 Isuzu in front of it.A new one is not all that dear, so I say go for it.

Not much else on that year model that can go wrong, apart the central locking, windows, lights and anything else touched by lucas.
Just kidding, I had a 89 and put a 4.6 in it.
Went and actually still does go really well.:)

I'd say the Viscous transfer is great for most drivers and that only those wanting to give their car a serious hiding off road would get any real benefit from the mechanical box. In a Rangie anyway.

The 1989 model is the FA (in the VIN). These came out in late 1988 as per usual model runs.

The 3.9 came out with the 1990 model (GA). It was released in late 1989 but it's not actually an 1989 model.
