I'd like to see all sport gone from free to air TV so that the stations would show something worth watching, particularly in summer.
Presently, TV is a wasteland in summer as it is overloaded with sport.

The free to air channels have shown they can't be responsible with showing sporting events many times, cutting off a crutial last part of the cricket or football to go to the news and ACA type shows, or not playing events live, only to finally show them at a ridiculous time in the morning. And don't even get me started on the olympics (summer or winter). I mean really, who actually wants to see the 16th replay of the swimming when there are 72 other better things they could be showing!
Then they pepper every game/match/race with ads so you miss another crutial moment. If you watch motor racing, they will always come back from an ad break at some stage with half the cars mangled together in a pile of burning carnage, or with a new race leader after an awesome overtaking manoeuvre. Fox sports is well worth paying for if you want to see sports on TV.

Personally I'd like all sport on pay TV so the cost of my pay TV would drop and I can still not watch the sport channels.

Yeah i'm with Ron, sport ruins TV.
And the sooner its out of the tabloid newspapers the better too-sport isn't news, and neither are sports peoples' relationships.

Free To Air TV is a completely false name. We all pay for it every time we buy something, because we have to pay for the advertising. Add to this the hundreds of millions of dollars we give them for nothing through the largesse of the government and each person probably pays more for their "free" TV than subscribers do for their pay TV.
ScottW has also hit the nail on the head with the arrogant way "free" TV treats us with the sport they have. If they can't behave responsibly with these sports then make it open slather for whoever wants to pay the most for the rights. One word of caution, though. We can't expect pay TV to play fair if they do get some sports. Given their record of charging extra to watch the Winter Olympics, contracts would have to ensure that they could not charge extra for showing these sports.

Doesn't pay TV show ads during sporting events?

Dunno - I don't watch sport. But from all accounts, FTA TV is notorious for taking ad breaks at the wrong time. To make it worse, the ad breaks have beocme longer over recent years with the (apparent) change of limits on advertising.
My wife likes to see equestrian events but they rarely appear on FTA TV, they are mainly on pay TV.

Not during the game they don't. During 1/2 time they usually have 1 ad break.
Also they tend not to screw the game around by advertising other shows over the top and advertsing other products (sportsbet etc) during the game.
Channel 9 I'm looking at you here.

Totally agree, we need a couple of sport only channels (FTA) so us non sports watchers can have a choice.

Given that there is very little worth watching on FTA TV in non sporting times I'm afraid your summer is going to be a wasteland regardless:)

I just can't believe that people pay to watch TV and ads! When PTV came to Aus it was marketed as being ad free. Had it for 2 years until they started the advertsing. Because they tried to maximise profits by over charging on subscription fees & being inflexible by not allowing people to tailor the channels that they wanted they didn't make the profits they had hoped for, so they bring in advertising.
I am so peeved about the super 14 not being on FTA or even re-broadcast later that I have been that close to going the PTV way but just can't bring myself to paying to watch ads irrespective of when they broadcast them.
As far as quantity of ads on FTA I think that it is a max. of 13mins per hour. However this is an average so it does get screwed around with by some during 'special events'. Channel 9 have no idea how to satisfy their audience (not in my house anyhow) and that is why they aren't winning the ratings. If another channel had the Winter Olympics I may have watched them.
They think we will just sit there and take whatever they dish out.
FTA digital is a good thing so support the campaign to keep major events on FTA. Personally, I cannot see why both PTV and FTA can't broadcast major events simultaneously and there should be no exclusives. That way people can choose when they see the ads.
Cheers

Each to their own I guess, I was merely passing on the info as I received it. We at home rarely watch any form of TV, and when the TV is on usually "Bananas in Pajamas" or "Bob the Builder" or whatever our 2.5 yo wants to watch :D
Personally TV is a waste of life, I much prefer being out in the scrub camping or taking photography than sport. But, I prefer Sport than the other tripe they put on TV.

I just wish that I could pay for just the doco and BBC channels and maybe some of the movie channels the rest are a waste of time.
They suggest that some of the channels are free - Ha - when you ask them to remove the christian channel they won't and they come up with the free bit, so then you ask them for equal time for the other religions, Buddist, Hindu, Jewish and Islam etc they won't do that either.

I agree. I hate the fact that I can't tailor the package for what I want. Most channels I don't watch but I have to pay extra to get the channels I do watch.

The FTA networks are absolutely hopeless with sport.
I know that not many people here are interested in tennis - but the network broadcasting the Australian Open this year (Seven) should not have had the rights.
They frequently interrupted transmission of huge games (Hewitt, Serena Williams vs. Stosur - a major game frequently advertised by Seven - and appalling Federer when he was a set and a break down) to broadcast Home & Away, or worse today tonight (FROM THE TENNIS!).
When Federer was down a set and a break (or two?) in the second set of what I think was a quarter-final, they cut to today tonight (I won't them with capitals :p) and returned after Federer had staged an amazing comeback. For those uninterested in tennis, it's like watching on Origin game with NSW (or Queensland ) coming back from 25-0.
This was also one of the Grand Slams - the Australian Open! :angrylock:
When they cut transmission, they didn't even defer it to one of their many digital channels (and Foxtel did not have the rights).
The argument holds for those here who don't want to watch the tennis - you would have been (as would I) better off if Foxtel had the rights.

I don't know what any of that means but it sounds bad (I think). Dunno what an Origin game is either.
