Brakes

Hey everyone, just curious as I have a 92 model range rover classic with the abs brakes fitted as standard. The brakes do not work straight up and the pump continually runs (its only meant to run for 30-45 secs) and the brakes still dont come up to full pressure. Im about to replace the accumulator and bleed the system.

My question is has anyone had to replace the pump at any time (it does make a pumping noise, which sounds very sick)cause I hear they also aren't cheap and secondly am I on the right track?

check the brakes are bled up properly by trying it with the electrics off.

Does the pump eventually cut out (as in after a few minutes) or does it keep running?

If the latter, it may just be a tired pump which is why it's not building up enough pressure.

A soft pedal on start up sounds like it might be this.

Could it be a leaking accumulator causing the pump to run and having to build up pressure after standing and losing accumulator pressure overnight?

Sounds like an accumulator issue to me, BUT if it has been like this for some time, then yes an ABS pump could be needed:mad:

so its not supposed to run on startup?? its supposed to hold pressure all the time??

No, the pump does not turn off, keeps making a very sick squirting sound every 10secs or so. The longest constant time Ive driven it so far is about 30mins or so and yeah pump kept pumping.

With the electrics off the pedal goes nearly to the floor.

oh, its supposed to run on startup but only for 30 - 45 secs, normally longer in the mornings when its cold. then it should stop and the accumulator should hold enough pressure for 4-5 full pumps before it needs to pump again.

They are not a continuous duty pump.
30 mins the thing must be glowing red hot.

Be careful the brush holders are known to melt!

Well I changed the accumulator and bled the brakes, I can actually stop the car on a dime now but the pump is still a big issue:mad:(It now holds enough pressure for 1 or 2 good pumps). I guess both the old pump and accumulator were at fault.
