Vehicle: Freelander 2001, KV6 Automatic.

Problem: Engine bay covered in oil.

Solution: At first after cleaning up the bay, i thought it was one of two pipes to/from the oil cooler. So i ordered these and replaced. No fix.
However, with a clean engine bay i was able to locate the oil leak.. it was coming from the exhaust camshaft seal cap located toward the front of the engine (There are two of these and apparently this is a common problem). So i replace this cap (bugger to remove and you must be careful replacing making sure you tap it in squarely and evenly. Now that i replaced the cap i figured fixed. Cleaned the engine bay, refilled with oil and took it for a test drive. After 5min, i could hear a hissing sound. So looked under the bonnet and presto.. covered with hot oil. The front exhaust camshaft seal cap was in tack, but this time it was the rear camshaft seal cap. Damn.. i knew i should have replaced both.. figured if one went then the other was in a similar condition. Purchased a second exhaust seal cap, cleaned the engine bay abd figured now this is all done! Took it for a spin, after 5min.. a large POP.. and low and behold engine oil all over the engine bay with the rear exhaust camshaft seal cap no where to be seen... obviously blown clear off.

To cut a long story short, I noticed positive pressure building up in the crankcase and each time removed the oil filler cap.. you could hear the air escape out.. at one stage while unscrewing it blew the cap out of my hand.

The problem was a blocked vacuum breather host to throttle body. It took 115psi to clear the blockage.

So if you are blowing exhaust camshaft seal caps... and you have positive pressure in the crankshaft.. clear out your breather hoses...

Problem all fixed. Thumbs down to Landrover for not making its customers aware of this so called 'well known problem' that could save '000's of dollars from not-so-ethical Landrover mechanics/workshops.
