Hi,
I'm looking at a new 130 single cab chassis (cash & no trade in), and was considering using privatefleet.com.au
From initial discussions with them, the deposit is payed to the broker, and the final payment is to the dealer who comes in with the best deal.
Obviously an interstate trip would only be value for more than $1k or so, but normally the vehicle is delivered to your door with a full tank of fuel.
Has any one any experience with using a third party broker?
cheers

I found PrivateFleet the next best thing to useless when I was after pricing for a new Defender 90. Emailing or telephoning dealers is easy and then you can play one against the other to get the best price (ie they will usually say "get back to us with your best price and we will at least match it").

Yes, they couldn't give me a price on the phone, it was a matter of waiting till the quotes came in to them.
Their claim was that as a bulk purchaser, the dealers could be reasonably certain that a genuine inquiry was being made and that other dealers would be competing, so it was worth while putting a bid in.

Defenders are hardly ever discounted, so I would not expect to save anything from going straight through a dealer. The only thing you may benefit from is jumping the queue a bit by them being able to find a dealer with an un-allocated vehicle. This was what we got when using a purchasing agent - who happened to be a relative. We got our new Defender in only five weeks instead of the standard 6 months dealers were telling us. Only got $1500 off the sticker price but then paid some of that back due to our vehicle having to be trucked up from another dealership in Sydney where it came off the boat.

I will continue with the trend, have bought a few LR's & many work vans, new, cash,no trade,& never ever had a better price from a broker than what i could get myself from a dealer.
I tried again on a new Hiace about 4 months ago,& the broker admitted he couldn't compete with the price i had already got from a dealer.

Hi thanks for that, I was all set to make the final phone calls re air fares over and boat back, when a call to the local dealer got an agreement to match the price and white instead of silver as the one in Geelong is.
Got to be happy with the price!

Hi, I glad it worked out for you, I thought that sounded like a really good price for what you were looking for, heaps cheaper than the rest i have seen.

Sounds good austastar. Only warnig may be to check the VIN. For example, of the two you provided links for, the one in Vic was indeed a 2009 model while the one in NSW, despite the 'headline' was a 2010. Not that there would be much difference between the two, you simply need to be careful that the dealer is not trying to fob a 2007 vehicle off on you without being open about it. The early Pumas had a few little problems that can all be sorted out, but it is better if the fixes are all done before it has left the factory.

Hi, thanks for that, I've been told that they are looking for a 09 plated model, and I gather there is very little difference to the 2010. Yep I will check the compliance plate.
I just hope I'm not being mucked about and miss out on the price all together.
Local dealer is part of a major vehicle dealership, he should know what is available - still sweating on the return phone call though.
Only been waiting 50 odd years to own a Landrover, a few more days won't hurt.

Hi,
Hmm! me thinks I'm being mucked about (albeit very nicely) as it is now close of business, and I had to make the contact, most unusual for a car salesman.
"Nothing so far, but still to hear back from a couple."
I notice the add in Vic has been edited to 'demo/near new' now.

Hi thats because they rego them so they can say to landrover they use it as a demo, and then they get a rebate from landrover for having a demo, most don't even get driven as demos. It just something the yard uses so they can sell them as new cheaper than the other yards.

Hi,
the ad also now lists a rego number, but it is not in the photo, and I was told it would have 12 months rego to a Victorian purchaser, but to me, being interstate, they would loan me trade plates for 14 days to get it 'home'.
Me thinks me smells a plot some where.
Thanks for the above info though, I might be able to use that some how if I get devious.

Hi, They should sell it cheaper the less the rego and the stamp duty, they always do well with every one I have dealt with have, I have brought several from the mainland. You can buy a 28 day pass and they usually do it for you.

Hi,
well thanks to flyreels for pointing out the add for me.
The local dealer wasn't able to match the price, nor find a similar vehicle, (I did prefer white).
Although it is a bit premature, (I wasn't going to buy for a few months yet), the price was too good to pass up, so deposit has been paid and the paper work signed.
Should be able to go and pick it up in 2 weeks or so.
Now how does that Landy wave go?
cheers
edit: guess I'll have to modify my avatar too.

Hi,
have sorted the $$, the air fare, the bus fare and the return boat fare.
Tomorrow night we should be on the boat back to Tassie and pick up a tray from a mate in Launceston on the way home.
Rego inspection early next week, and then the big question - where to go first??

Hi,
   Well it is here! Yea!
Flew over to Melb, bus to Geelong and drove it back last Sunday morning.
Melbourne is more of a mad house than I remember, but I was very glad to have a borrowed GPS to do the navigation for me.
Once off the boat in Devonport, I set the preferences on the GPS for 'shortest route' and 'avoid traffic', and got sent down all sorts of back country roads to Launceston, where we fitted a tray and then came down the main road home.
Very pleased with the way it drives, cab is a bit small, pity they don't make a space cab for the 130, that would be ideal.
Wired up the tray as per a trailer so I can unplug it from the chassis, and remove it easily to do work on the under tray storage areas I hope to build.
Got it Tasmanian regi$tered yesterday, it failed the road worth inspection with a loose wheel bearing.
Very glad that was found, I was rather resentful at paying $80 to inspect an brand new vehicle, but having found that, I'm a little more mellow about it.
Shall have a word with Mr Rover about a refund of the extra 1/2 hour labour I was charged to correct the fault.
Went for a drive down the Huon valley this afternoon, found a few dirt roads and some tracks to try the locking diff and low range, very nice - so predictable.
cheers
