View Full Version : Hurry up with that snorkel!

Just had a sticky beak at the lucky8 site in the USA (junosi mentioned it to me last weekend). They have a process for coating and waterproofing the ECU!! Hopefully someone in Australia gets a hold of the formula and starts doing it here too!!! Combine it with the HRA snorkel coming up soon and I'm going to play on the beach! At last I can test out the rust free properties of the alloy panels on the pig!

How good's that!! Saves the unwanted embarassment! How much to get our low riding ECU's done?

You could probably DIY it. Google 'conformal coating' or 'potting compound' and you should come up with a variety of resin type coatings for waterproofing pcb's. I've used HumiSeal 1b31 before and had good results

Funny you should mention the water-proffing of the ECU... I asked Justin at Lucky8 about that last week and he told me they no longer do it. Didn't elaborate why.
I can only guess that the epoxy was pretty pricey, and/or the sealing of the ECU itself caused heating problems... and how do you guarantee that all 24(?) connectors will seal properly?
Cheers, Paul.

the extension harness used in the Lucky8 clip is the key... relocate the BECM... slip it into the storage pocket behid the driver's seat? Then think about the same for the auto trans/EAS ECUs etc...unless the vehicle only leaks on one side ;):p

Another good idea then...
Extension cords all round, and throw in a 6 bank powerboard for me too! :D:p

Sounds great!!,
I think that they actually use a thermally conductive goo, so it take the heat away from the PCB, I have been looking into it and even seeing about creating extension leads for the ecu and modifying the glove box to hold them.
Its not much but its a start!!!
Paul, I rang Lucky 8 too and they told me to send my ecu over to them and they could do it, that was about a week ago?????
Cheers

oh P.s. I would love a brand new snorkel for my rangie, any idea when i can teach my rangie to swim?

curious... I contacted him on Friday 26-March and he said they were no longer doing it. Maybe because I asked him about buying some of his kit for local distribution here. He may understandably want to keep that to himself, but why then tell me he is no longer doing it? Dunno, but good luck with it if you get it done.
Snorkel, yeah... Andy is busy with it... you'll see it on my car soon, or maybe his "test mule" if I don't get up to Sydney in time.
Cheers, Paul.

Andy has a P38 now? YIPPEEEEE!!!!
Please expand... I read that build up he and father did on sisters 130, and am having some very weird (but good!) visions of what Andy would/could do with a P38!!!
Any photo's available of "the mule"?
Dave
P.S. Razza, how much were they charging for the ECU goo dip?
P.P.S. Paul, I've had similar experiences with US businesses... my understanding is exporting puts them further under the eye of the dreaded IRS and creates a whole heap of admin drama's... probably doesn't help AUS is such a piddly market compared to their own. I wonder if they would be more inclined to help if we were say the population of China or India?

Hey Dave,
Sorry i cant remember what they quoted over the phone, but i remember them saying to just send the ECU's to them and depending on how many they would then give me an acurate quote!!! So basically send me your beloved car ECU's then when i have then i will charge like a wounded bull...well thats the impression that i got after speaking to him.

If I was ever reluctant to buy a snorkel, that was changed yesterday!!
Took a newby 4x4ing. He has a Hilux with bars, snorkel and such. So we went down to the sand area at Shoalhaven river rest area near Braidwood.
We go down onto the river bed, drive through the sand and find a few water crossings. Got out and checked each one before leading him through. All were only about hub height deep except for one large one that was indeterminable, but definetly not for me, it had a chicken track around it, so we used that.
So we go through all these crossings as far as we could, without getting his new truck horribly scratched.
We turned around and started back. My wife, and chief photographer, got out to take some movies of us doing these crossings.
So, I'm leading and off I go ... STRAIGHT INTO THE CROSSING THAT WAS DEFINETLY TOO DEEP.
Bonnet goes completly under water... I scream.... then floor it. V8 still has some air at the moment, and luckily the hole was only very short and I managed to get out alive!!
My newby went through, smug with HIS SNORKEL!!
So, hurry up Paul/Andrew!!!
Although I'm experienced enough to know what my car can and cannot do, I'm not bright enough to remember where I've been after 10 minutes!!!

I hear ya!:D seeing water on the bonnet is a scary thing in a P38a... I don't think anyone is as keen to get their grubby mits on that snorkel as I am. I don't want to build up any false expectations, but it is real close... and Andy won't share the "spy pics" even with me :o

If there's photo's in existence... they had better get put up here soon!
I took the family out camping/off roading on the weekend in MRS car and am now again pretty keen to do more wet weather trips this year... sans family and in the "pretty pig" of course!
Come on Andy we could do with a little tease and something to keep us keen until they are ready...
Hoo-Roo, Dave.
P.S. If you need a Melbourne based vehicle to prototype-showcase this product I'm up for it.

some prototyping of the next snorkel for your edification
Basic design showing smooth lines that compliment the wheel arch of the Rangie, with clever no-drilling-required mounts. Notice how the RH mount doesn't obstruct your view to the LH side of the vehicle anymore.

Now I know you'd love to throw all your hard-earned at me, but you'll have to be patient as we work out a few minor "issues" ;)

Excellent... tuned length of specially designed light weight inlet manifold to promote turbulent flow (no need for Hiclone...there's a saving already) plus independently powered forced induction package. AND a bucket to stop water getting in when the whole lot submerges totally :wasntme:
you spend too much time in the shed;) don't we all:(

Obviously, the snorkel head is missing, but the intention is for it to sit fairly flush with the roof-line.
Where's that bucket, er... waterproof pre-filter, gone?

I have been up in cairns for a week, and there are that many water crossings up here!!! we need that snorkel!!!
although can i make a suggestion, that instead of running up the length of the front quarter panel, can that piece goes in behind the panel?
I have attached a photo of the rangie doing one of the easier water crossings...

Sorry Andy, all that planning, prototyping and hard work and now I'm with evryone else and looking at ordering one of Pauls blown snorkels!!! He does indeed spend too much time with his car...
Anyway, can you try and make the head one of those sexier close fitting wrap around the roof style ones not the traditional truck like pointy forward things. I reckon it would better suit the character of the car.
When can I order?

i must have a 'fully imported' model as my airbox pickup is on the other side :(
i understand the bucket and blower have dual roles to play
* 'the bucket' ..... to bail out water coming thru the heater vents when drowning
* 'the blower' ..... to rapidly dry out all the submersed electronics that Land Rover put under the seats in a 4 wheel drive

on a serious note, i think aesthetically the teardrop shape as it comes out of the guard would look better if it was a tapered squarer shape to mirror the shape at the back of the light/indicator cluster. then it's going to be different to all the criusers-hi luxs-patrols
stylistically i'd like to see the top similar to the rally cars Dakar etc. where they morph into the roofline either across the top of the screen or alternatively the top of the doorway.
other than that lookin good so far.

Tasi, YES and YES! I thought it looked a little like a re-hashed old 80 series cruiser one with the round bit at the front.
And Andy, I also reckon you shoudl emboss the Hard Range lettering along the horizontal section. It is your brand to put out there on your product.

I've been lucky enough to see this in person at Andy's and can say it's looking great!
Looking at the prototype in person, you can see that there's been considerable man hours to get it to this stage. Can't wait to see how this evolves :D

G'day Ron,
I was going to come and say hello, but the way things worked out yesterday we just had to get moving so that we could get back to Geelong today. We left Erich's place just before 8 and got to Yass about 10.40 and stayed there. Didn't want to leave any later - I get too tired driving and its not safe. We were only at Erich's for maybe 30 mins or a bit more. If I could have I would have come across to Emu Plains.
So my apologies for not catching up. I certainly will next time I'm there.

Ah, no worries, Willem. I thought you might have been in town a bit longer.
Actually we were, Ron. We arrived Tuesday morning and visited with Erich and Sheila for an hour or two. We then went to deliver the car to the mechanic and we were then without a car till we collected it at about 5 o'clock on Friday night. We stayed in Sydney - near Hyde Park - and spent a few days having a bit of a 36th honeymoon. We had a great time, even if it was a bit longer than planned. We were meant to leave on Thursday morning, but due to changing circumstances that blew out to Friday evening. So if things had gone according to plan we would have given you a call sometime Wednesday to set things up for Thursday. But the best laid plans ...
But we would like to catch up again. I was looking forward to introducing Trudi to yourself and Elizabeth. But it will have to be, Lord willing, some time in the future.

Hey Willem - was good to catch up with you and Trudi at "the house" on Monday. Hope you enjoyed the tour... you've probably seen parts of it that I've never been to:D
Sorry I couldn't stay longer... had a heap of work to do... got away about 7pm and then off to the LRC meeting at 8pm where it appears I've been accepted as a member :o
Glad to hear you got back home safe. How's the motor going?

G'day Paul,
It was great to catch up. We had a good look at the house, as you call it. I am always impressed by the portraits ... particularly of Sir Henry Parkes, the father of federation. Just look at his eyes ... the determination, the vision! We went up on the roof - got some good pics.
Good to see you got accepted! Now you'll be even busier!
We got back fine. Stopped at Yass on Friday night. Got back to Geelong just after 3 on Saturday afternoon. Motor is beaut. Sam did a good job!

Lately i've been looking at ways to run the piping inside the guard from the airbox to the rear of the LHF quarter panel. When i'm home from work next i'm going to investigate options for different shaped pipe and types of joiners and sealing compounds, then a snorkel that has a similar profile to the A pillar on our rangies to see if it can be done without having the body of the snorkel running most of the way along the quarter panel, yet still retain the original air intake location at the airbox.
If I have any luck i'll post up the outcome and tools and gear needed for the job.
My aim is to have an attractive product that wont restrict airflow.
Cheers

11th May 2010, 09:34 PM
Hi Keithy - I wish you better luck than Andy and me had on that front. The restriction is at the top of the wheel arch, and worse if the inner arch is still in place to get something that is 75-100mm dia equivalent area through that small gap. You could get something moulded in there which would make better use of the available space but the square-ish edges of the mould would likely screw up the air flow a bit... not sure about that, just a theory.
Cheers, Paul.
Keithy P38
12th May 2010, 11:58 AM
Yeah, I havent physically pulled the inner guard out as yet but thought that space would be a restriction. If I can keep the diameter of the pipe the same but simply a different shape I might have a win! Failing that, the inner guard could do with some re-moulding too! Might be the easier way to go about it.
Cheers

-HINT- the D3/D4 has a clam shell bonnet and you can get a G4 snorkel for them, they are fairly similar to the rangie and they look great ( except the head of it). -
I checked one out recently...they look nice and neet and fit inside that front 1/4 panel
