so i picked up a pair of s/h lockers and compressors, switches etc. i have TD5 with SLS rear and ABS/traction control that all works good. considering whether i should fit both lockers, or just the rear and sell off the front locker seperate. am i right in that the front locker can be put into the rear of another disco if the flange is changed over ?

Assume you have CDL????.....if not best to do that in conjunction with your rear locker.

yes, have cdl, so thinking just that and the rear locker will be a good combo

I have a Disco 1 and maxi rear.
Makes a big difference when engaged.

When turning, the rears just drag each other around, good way of telling they are working.
Twin be good but imagine how deep in the poo you can get with two.
You will never get out if ever bogged.:p

You can get out of a twin locked bog ok.

I'd get the installer to check them both, it wont be too big a deal, probably just any seals. Install them both, If you've already got the locker then its not much more to get it put in rather than selling it off cheaply.

Yes I am sure you can get out of a twin locked bog, I am sure. Was meant more tongue and cheek.

Depending on what the lockers owe you and your financial situation, the decision may be different.
I too would probably install both if money not an issue.

Just that I have just one and I am very happy with that.;)

got em reasonably priced for the pair with compressor and switches etc. not so much worried about the financial side, more conveniance. i dont do heaps of "offroading", this is more of a safety thing for if i do get stuck going up the old telegraph road etc, rather than for going mud slinging. i will be installing the rear myself as they are complete centres with cw&p installed. wont be a hard install at all . espec the rear will be simple. front more time consuming but still ok to do myself. just not sure i will really need it and if its not needed, someone else might "REALLY NEED" it. :)

I would like 2 myself (front and rear) but if im honest, with a D2 with a CDL fitted + TC and a Rear locker, your always going to have 3 wheel drive, be pretty extreme stuff to need a front locker "imo"........I will be fitting a rear only, dont want to make the TC redundant, it has to "earn" its place on the truck !! :D

I'm guessing these came from ebay. I think I was bidding on them - came from Vic? Was a good deal you got if it was those! :D

I have f+r air lockers in for about 15 years.
When they were installed they only lasted about 2 weeks before they developed a leak. Replaced f&r seals under warranty, 4 weeks later the same deal, compressor cutting more in than out, Replaced both f&r seals again under warranty. Faulty batch of seals x2.Since then I have not had any issues whatsoever. I would not be without them for a serious 4wd.
I would check/change the seals before putting them in

I saws those too. Quite a bargain.

Given what you paid for them I'd just bolt them in and smile :)
They were already fitted into D2 diffs so as long as the bearings are alright I'd just test them with the air compressor you got with them to make sure they work and bolt them up.

make sure you check for end flote on the pinion, also it might be an idea to check the backlash on the crown wheel and pinion, you will need a dial gauge to check it acuratly, about 0.20mm-0.25mm is a good amount of backlash;)

CHEERS TIM.

freight was a bit of a killer, but still ended up a good deal :)

just not too sure i can be bothered with the front, heh.
and then if i do, do i need axles and cv's?
ahhh, decisions to be made.

I just recently bought a "new in box" RD128 to match the RD56 rear we've always had. I was going to buy those to re-hock separately. I nearly went harder at it but then I thought what normal person needs four airlockers. :D Seemed like a dangerous way to possibly end up with another Rover altogether!

Do you have any idea what mileage they have done? If it's over 200K, you might want to consider splitting them to inspect/replace the thrust washers. They do loosen up over time and give you a few degrees of slack in the drive line.

Unless you are doing very very serious rock work, IMHO you would be better off offloading one locker and putting that money into Hi Tough/Maxi axles on your locked rear diff. You will then have a traction controlled front diff that has no steering limitations of a locked diff and will be kinder on your axles and CV's.

yeah that's pretty much my thoughts.
although that being said, the more time i spend in this thing offroad, the more serious i want to go with it, hehe.
maybe i will just fit the rear locker and leave the other in the shed for the minute, go playing and see if i want more traction.

i've had a couple of ppl contact me re the front locker if i want to sell it. can i just say this is not a for sale add, just a out loud discussion,
i will put a for sale up if i decide to sell the front locker. thanks for the comments so far. been enlightening, but so far still somewhat inclined to my original thoughts of fitting rear only at this stage.
will keep all informed

the car had done 140k klms in total, though not sure how long the lockers had been fitted. they look very clean on the outside as if the weren't fitted for a particularly long time, although that may have been that the parters steam cleaned them before removing. back is easy enough to fit that i think i will just chuck it in and see how it goes. need to take off the right rear hub to check for an oil leak anyhow, prime opportunity :)

fitting new SLS airbags at the same time, and will pull the SLS compressor apart as a pre-emptive measure against water ingress.
got some time off until mid may, so might spend some time taking pics and post it all up.
really looking forward to playing around with it :)

also need to fit 2" raised springs to the other D2, should do an instructable on that as well ?

If you only fit one when you have the luxury of two sitting there you will more then likely end up cursing yourself one day when your stuck some where out in the boonies.
I have only used my front locker once in anger and only when I had to. If I hadn't had two then I might still be sitting out there.

Think of two lockers as insurance and for the added peace of mind for that really sticky situation when one just isn't enough to get you out. :)

Just a thought but I bet half the people calling you aren't chasing their first locker, they are after a second one for their front.

cheers,
Terry
