View Full Version : PUMA - Leaky Power Steering Pump...

During a recent service my trusty mechanic discovered weeping fluid on the power steering pump and sent me off to my dealer to have it fixed. The dealer had a look at it today, and sure enough the pump needs to be replaced. So far so good...

However, apparently there IS NO SPARE POWER STEERING PUMP in this country! Delivery from the UK will take 2-3 weeks. Voicing my dissatisfaction on the matter (2nd time in 6 months that parts had to come from the UK for a warranty job) the service rep said that since this was not a common fault, LRA didn't keep spare pumps in stock.

Now I consider just about anything in a Land Rover a common fault, so, question for the experts. Is a leaky/fault power steering pump an uncommon fault or is this just typical LRA mismanagement?

Well, I've had 90% of my 07 Puma changed to a 09/10 model (just prior to Easter - new Gearbox, clutch, transfer case, rear axle and hubs ), but the power steering pump hasn't made the list. In fact, I haven't heard of this failure before so I would tend to agree that it is in fact, an uncommon problem.

Just ask the dealer to provide a RR (or Jag)! :p

I cannot understand what it is the problem for LR to keep one or two pumps in Oz.
Management in LR Australia is very bad

I have problems with my steering but no leaky pump...however I wouldn't expect them to pick up on that if it was.....

snap on the gearbox and trans scallops they have had my car for nearly 4 weeks..

3 weeks to take out the gearbox and trans send off for repairs..the 4th week was when I picked it up when it was ready to go and couldn't get the car in or out of 5th without a battle...so guess what the car that was ready to go and all good got 20mins down the road and went back in for another week to have the gearbox out for the second time and to be sent off to be fixed for a second time...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I also know someone who has had the gearbox replaced recently in his Puma.
The new box is fine...

No its not my son's,his hasn't had anything replaced so far, umm, where is that piece of wood:p

He did have a window broken by a thief, there was only one left in the country, took a week to come from a dealer in Melbourne,no aftermarket available....

the 07's I think were just lemons......the later cars seem to be much much better! we were just the testing ground I think.

Feel sorry for the people in the uk that had the 06's :lol2:

There's a lesson in this,same as the D2's.The '99 i had was a LEMON,as were many of them.

unfortunate for us it was just the right time financially for us to buy...we knew we would have issues but was on the hope because it had been out for a year already in the uk we had a start as not to much was going wrong then.

How wrong were we :D

Still mine is a late 09 early 10 year now.....I'm not joking only have the props/ brakes and axles to go:)

I'm usually quick to complain, so for a change here's a positive note!

After expressing my unhappiness about the length of time it would take to obtain a new pump, my dealer (Trivett Parramatta) have now not only obtained said pump, but today swapped it out ... which means I can now go on my Western Qld trip in a couple of weeks.

Not sure what happened behind the scenes of course, but Trivett have a new man behind their service desk, a bright young lad named George, who unlike his predecessor not only listed, but actually kept me informed about what was happening. So good on ya George!

Happy for a change :)

hahahahahahahah you had that problem too!!!!:D

Yes I have to say so far so good we have had good dealing with this new guy was very good with calling us back etc...

we also told him about our steering problem, (he is the 4th person) however I dont know whether anything was touched because the problem was still very evident on the first pick up from the gear box,, but after getting it back from the second pick up of the gearbox I have not felt it since!......

so no one indicated that something to the steering was done....but problems that now happen on a daily basis I'm sure just don't disapear:o

there is only 3 explanations for this

They have done something and not told us and it has fixed the problem
Its because the temperature has cooled down as in the begining before it started doing it daily it only used to do it on hot days
voodoo magic!!

I prefer voodoo magic as it sounds cooler:D

However I still dont feel like brakes are right...perhaps I need to invite Mahn round for another coffee so I can have a drive of his...perhaps I was just a little too spoilt with the FL2...:)

Well a Ristretto for me please...apparently if I am to believe what is opined here Puma owners should only drink Latte. ;)

I had a very minor weep from the steering box which was fixed with the nipping up of a connection.

My brakes seem fine. The Disco's weren't as good as the Fender's.

yeah neither are my disco's its just last time it came out of the garage the brakes didn't feel right to me.....however I was without the car for 4 weeks and driving something that had very sharp brakes so maybe that's it..still you think I would of been used to it by now having driven the defender for the last 2 weeks...

But still when going down hills it just feels hard to slow down and I'm only talking from 60/70 not big speeds..

I guess I will get used to it again:)

Fixed fixed ...it's a brand spanker they should replace the parts ie: new gearbox or its like been buggered with they so suck and they never have parts in stock grrr

Hi,

"If it is not leaking, it is surely empty"

This is the rover way for checking fluids, the positive aspect is that it keeps corrosion away.

After all this is how these beasts mark their territory.

Enjoy your ride.

Management in LR Australia is very bad

That is a common thing for car manufacturers these days. A few years back we needed a new power steering pump for our Subaru Liberty. None in the country and a six week wait for one from Japan. When questioned about this Subaru said they "Never" sell any of those so don't keep stock. We got a second hand one from the wreckers to keep the car mobile as the original pump had a bearing fail and the car could not be driven.

Having owned a Subaru Outback for 5 years, where not a single item needed to be fixed during the 5-year warranty period, I can actually forgive their logic. Land Rover on the other hand...

Seem to have a slight leak in the steering box.
