Don't know where to buy a core except from the dealer.

The dash WILL need to come out, unfortunately.... :(

How old is the vehicle and what condition was the coolant? I need to know coz my vehicle is now 10 years old and I'm wondering when the heater core will fail... ;)

i found a new heater core on ebay UK delivered for $150 so that was handy
the coolant didn't exist the previous owner didn't seem to use it so on the major service after i bought it,all fluids were changed including coolant free radiator water and nulon oat coolant put in its place then every thing fell apart from there eg radiator ,water pump , heater core ,some other choice parts went as well .:( all good now i hope
mine is a 2000 model with 200,000 km V8 but you should be ok if your running coolant so good luck and i hope it is all good .

Mine is a 1999 DII which I have meticulously maintained, but it is definitely used as a 4x4, so it's been dunked into muddy bog holes, crossed rivers, towed broken down vehicles, recovered stuck vehicles, travelled through the Simpson desert twice, etc.

I maintain the fluids and coolant as per the service intervals and my vehicle still experienced a slipped cylinder liner even though it has not overheated once.

So I'm not all that convinced that certain aspects of Land Rovers are built with longevity in mind. I've replaced my water pump and radiator and thermostat even though they are working with new ones after having had the engine block out to have the top hat liners fitted.

Hopefully it'll last me a while yet, but the heater core is still original.

Think you will find it's the OAT coolant that did it. If OAT is not specified as the coolant, you don't use it as certain rubber components need to be suitable for the chemical makeup of it.
Do a search on the subject, there is a post currently on coolant suitability.

Every thing else seems fine the hoses all seem ok it was just the lack of coolant that was the issue it affected the aluminium throughout the cooling system

I replaced the heater core and feed pipes in my 99 D2 TD5 last year and I must say it was a real pita. When I did mine I removed everything except the main centre box that houses the heating and cooling cores as well the flaps that direct air.

As far as I could tell to remove the entire thing I would had to have disconnected the gas pipes to the cooling core from the inside of the engine bay and even then I think there were some more attachment bolts that I could not locate for the centre section which is why I left it in there. The biggest problem I faced was removing the old corroded feed pipes. The clamps that held them in place and together were screwed together from the firewall side! So I just cut them off with my dremel.

My main reason for changing the core was when all the coolant hoses were changed the pipes that go through the firewall to the heater core were all corroded and snapped off. So I had to change them anyway and not knowing the state of the core at the time thought it prudent to change it as well.

The core slides in and out from the drivers side, down near the centre tunnel.

I remember thinking that maybe I could have just undid the clamps holding the pipes to the core and any retaining screws/clips etc and slid it out without taking the dash out if it was only the core I was replacing. You will still need to remove the centre console though.

Hope this helps shed some light on it for you At any rate Good Luck.
