HI all
was wanting to know if it is possible to swap to 24 spline axels for the standard 10 spline in my 130. It has the salisbury rear and rover front as supplied in tt as standard. A friend has a RRC with heavy duty axels and LSD diffs, I want to keep the salisbury as they seem the strongest rear option. But not sure if the axel from my friends RRC are interchangable front and rear.

The rangie front is ok and easy to swap just need the diff Half Shafts, Cv's and end caps and the you done .

But the rear is a differant matter. You need to really put a new 24 spline diff in and if you were going to do that i would put a locker in with the 24 spline in it rather than getting a 24 spline salisbury diff. Unless you find one lying around. The rangie one won't fit in the back

Can swap the front and leave the back for the time being . No need for both to be 24 splie will still work with 24 front front and 10 rear

Garry, I think you will find the Salisbury is already 24 spline. As far as I know they never made any 10spline in the Salisbury. Just change the centre and half shafts in the front....Brian

If the salisbury is 24 spline that would be great, so then are the axels the same length on the RRC and a Defender not sure so hopefully some one can clear that one up.

Its a 5 min job to remove each one- then you can tell us:)

EVERY salisbury is 24-spline - from 1970-on - except for the FC101 which is 21 spline but 1.47" diameter (rover 24-spline is 1.24" diameter).

So the rear is fine, except it iis a goood idea top convert to HTE flanges and oil-lubed beariings.

The front is also 24-spline at the diff if it is a 300tdi. However it necks down to 32-spline 1" diameter at the CV - whiich is yoour weak point. You can upgrade to earlier (county) CVs and 24/23-spline axles.

and the FC101 is easy to tell because they have 6 wheel studs and not 5 like all other land rovers

If 130's were available before the 300Tdi (I'm not that familiar with 130's), it could have 10 spline axles. If it has a 300tdi, as Ben said it would have the weak 24 spline rover axles and cv's.

I know with disco 1's when they fitted the 300Tdi and 24 spline axles, they also downgraded to narrow hubs/spindles and they can't accept the stronger county cv's with their longer stub axles, unless aftermarket (e.g. HTE) drive flanges are used.

If the heavy duty axles in the donor RRC are maxi-drive (or HTE) they would be 24/23 with county cv's.

If the RRC was converted from 10 spline to aftermarket 24 spline axles, it would have drive flanges for the wider hubs/spindles and not suitable for later narrow hubs.

There are other after market options, but If they are stock 24 spline rover, then heavy duty axles is a poor description/bad joke.

NO, that is the problem. When LR switched from 10 to 24 spline on all diffs in the early 90's, they also changed from using steel to using cheese (cheddar or wensleydale presumably)...

Have a look at Dave Ashcroft's tests which show that both 10 and 24 spline OEM axles break at approximately the same torque.
