G'Day First time poster ,been a member for a while thought it may be interesting re fuel consumption and conditions on the Newell Highway.Bought the Discovery v8 about a year ago 1998 model first registered 1999 ,about the last of the Discovery 1 ,it's a LS by the way why did i buy it? i just liked the look of it ,and of course everybody told me about the horrorfic fuel consumption ,oil leaks and things not working in general, and up to a point they were right ,however i had a ace up my sleeve,my Grandson is a time served motor mechanic ,and after checking timing (way retarded) new vacuum advance (not working) new valve cover gaskets (rubber type) new oil cooler hoses (made up locally),new front engine mounts, new fan coupling, seperate temp guage ,we were nearly there .A few weeks ago Wife and I decided on trip to Melbourne via the Newell Highway ,left Maroochydore early stopped o'nite at Gilgandra after a pleasant trip ,Highway in reasonable condition and NO problems with truck drivers I wish truck drivers on the Bruce Highway would take a few lessons from them , up here they are cowboys pure and simple the difference is quite amazing.next day Gilgandra to Melbourne .a fair bit of roadwork going on but road reasonable and truck drivers doing the right thing, posted speed limits of 50k in NSW towns was a eye opener ,and drivers seem to obey them QLD could learn a thing or two from them.Melbourne traffic is horrendous ,over two hours from start of freeway to sandringham ,total distance 1810 ks fuel use worked out by Wife at each fill up ranged between 13.6 and 14.5 litres per 100 ks which sounded pretty good .Return trip same road same stops ,and after doing a lot of running around in Melbourne for two weeks (mainly Mornington Peninsular) on return trip the Discovery was loaded to the hilt with Red Hill apples and cases of wine ,Anyway total mileage was 4056 ks total fuel 572 litres standard unleaded which works out to 14.1 litres to 100 ks,very reasonable i thought ,soooo no problems with this Land Rover and that V8 sounds sooo good ,Cheers Maroochy
