Salutations!

I've just got my 1st Landy, after 4 decades of sundry VW's (inc 3 military ones), Jaguars, MG's etc etc ad nauseum. (Cripes, I hope I got the photo downloading right!

This is "Larry" who's been off the road for a decade but his last job was as the trusty steed of a Professional Snake Catcher, ergo the dismantling will be done slowly & with caution

Looking at that PTO winch, I reckon Larry could easily pull himself up a tree to escape an angry reptile.

A home made tray/cage but very well done & quite useful.

Powered by a lusty, trusty Red Holden 186. Sorry purists, but I'm not at all anal about that & anyway, Holden conversions are surely a part of LR history in Oz?
Speaking of red, I think that is how it looks after 47 years in the Oz climate. Masai Red?

The worst thing I've found: the metal has pulled away & distorted the bulkhead where the hinge attaches making the door a poor fit. There are bits of rust mainly in the bulkhead & a few small holes on the chassis outriggers. The upper doors are sad too but I see they can be bought ex UK fully glazed. Is that the way to go?

I intend to reduce him to a rolling chassis then clean, paint & rebuild as necessary. But, I want to get him going 1st & assess the cond of the motor, g/box & diffs. The brakes are shot but the mysterious thing is the clutch pedal is frozen solid in the up posn. It's not the master cyl & I will check the slave (unlikely) & it CAN'T be the thrust bearing: seriously in 40 years of fiddling with old cars that has to be the greatest feat of over engineering i've ever seen! So I'm suspicious of the clutch operating lever. Any other suggestions?

Hey look! FIVE gear levers! (and a mechanical petrol tap between my legs-2 tanks! Shades of those pre 1960 VW beetles!) The back 2 are for the PTO winch. Can anyone tell me how they work & how to move them?

Very nice!
I saw that on ebay too, but already have my share :)
Reproduction door tops are available from a couple of Aussie suppliers. GaryCLR on ebay often has them and he's good to deal with.
With the MGs and Jags you'll be well aware of our friend Lucas Prince of Darkness
Cheers

Yes! Where would we be without the net!? I remember finding a single +40thou piston for my Mark 5 (pushrod) Jag in Colorado. It saved me getting a 2nd mortgage to buy a set.

Well Larry gave me 2 surprises today. The 1st siezed clutch slave cylinder I've ever seen was a surprise but that threaded clevis pin on the clutch operating pushrod had me stuffed for an hour trying to work out how to get it out! I twigged when I scraped off the crap & saw the slot!!

Joe Lucas? I've been there. Thanks but the 186 has Bosch electricals. I also have an MGA with a Bosch distributor. ("Ja! Ja! Vee huff vays of making dem Sparkenspitzenmaschinen!)

Another door-top option is aluminium reproductions from the US (Rocky Mountain). They aint cheap, but they get good reviews on US landy sites.

Great project by the way - PTO winch is cool!

Cheers,

Adam

G'day Gideon :)

Welcome to AULRO :) and the world of series Landrovers, I would suggest that you get a copy of the Haynes Landrover Series 2/2a/3 4 cylinder petrol workshop manual (no 314) as it will become your bible ;) it is in plain english and without having to use tool ABCDEFG-12354786 :D as is so often in the genuine books, if in doubt just ask somebody, as there are some of us that are/were in the trade and still have our parts books ;)

cheers

OK, I've taken the GB cover off & the winch levers are exposed.

They both go in-out axially.

The big one nearest the passenger meshes the (exposed) PTO gears with the (exposed) gear turning the driveshaft to what looks like a diff at the winch. Self explanatory.

The smaller lever is a bit more mysterious. It's connected to a boxy thingy on top of the GB so I can't see what it does but Im guessing it's a clutch of sorts?

Does that mean to use the winch the engine is left running in neutral, the PTO is engaged with the big lever & then the drive is actuated with the smaller one? Or is the drive done via the main clutch??

And can I make the winch wind in both directions? Or is there a free-wheel function & I just grab the cable & walk? Seriously, it doesn't look all that easy to do that. The drum is huge and the steel cable is all of 10 or 12mm in diameter. Serious stuff indeed!

Thnx UncleHo! Who's Gideon?:)
