View Full Version : Late 2a- Farm Find

When I was beginning my journey into Land Rovers, I looked at this one on a farm and was dismayed by the condition. Now, a little later, I realise what's repairable and it doesn't seem so bad now.
I went an looked today again and got a few snaps. Holden conversion, covered in pine needles, complementary spiders, Awesome bulkhead, rotten rear cross-member and gearbox cross-member, pretty straight and some creative work in the cab. Rear tub was great- under the rubbish.
Pretty good for a couple of hungie bucks?

Yes, I reckon I'm buying.
It'll be a fun project and something different to the 2a 109 GS that I'm nearly finished on.

No thanks CH, I have two of them. And I dont like them on SWB. The Series 11 truck cab is much prettier on a SWB.

From what I could see it was only the rear and gearbox cross-members that were cactus. They should be reasonable easy to replace... shouldn't they?
It would be great to go with a new chassis but locating and getting it here may be prohibitively pricey.
Yep, I think they're cute. I'd love to get this one back on its feet. I'd have to do it on a fairly tight budget, though. I've been a bit free with the cash on the 2a GS restoration...
Will I ever find a cure for this Land Rover bent I'm developing. I've spotted a series in great restorable condition nearby. I cannot do them all, though. I'm a masseur in a rural hub town and I get a lot of farmers and shearers coming to me. I'm always asking them if they've seen Land Rover in sheds or paddocks. I've got too many leads to follow up on these days!

I would love to be able to just whip something up like that but I have no welding experience and I wouldn't want to frig the job up. I should do a course. Could you do an appropriate job with a stick welder?

G'day Korg20000bc :)

Why not just purchase a rear X-member from the UK and just get it welded in locally :) but specify it is for a late "G" suffix 2a 88" from places like www.richardschassis.co.uk (http://www.richardschassis.co.uk) it might well be cheaper in the long run to do it that way.

Hope that is of some help

Certainly is helpful! Thanks for it. I've also just located an army 2a 88" chassis that needs a home. I think I recall something about a late2a army 88" on the remlr.com site.
Hmmm...

For info, I priced a new 109 chassis (galvinised) from Marsland in UK about two years ago. Was about 3 and a bit grand delivered to Melbourne. Exchange rate is better now but.....:(
I'd be looking for a donor vehicle with a decent chassis - would be cheaper. You coulld recoup some of the costs by selling of spare bits and have other spares for your rebuild. They do pop up on ebay from time to time.
Still, a nice new galvinised chassis would be nice too:cool:

G'day Korg20000bc :)

If it is a late "G"suffix (lights in guard model) it would be one of a very few, send a PM to Phoenix and he should be able to clue you in :)

                                                                                            cheers

Interesting, and some work there. Looks like a Series 1 truck cab roof on a late 11A.No it's a SIIa hardtop roof cut down into a truck cab. The rear wall is the side wall of the hard top.
How do you tell. Series 1 roofs have a gal nose that overhangs the top and side of the windscreen without a front gutter.
The series II/IIA/III roofs have a gal gutter that goes around the front of the screen.
Series 1 windscreens are wider at the top than SII/SIIa/SIII roofs. Remember that S1 walls are vertical and overhang the top of the tub by about 1/2" each side, while the SII/SIIa?SIII taper in at the top.

Well I called the guy again to find out when I could pick it up and he left me a phone message to tell me he'd sold it to someone else...
Last talk we had he was going to call me in a couple of days, about 3 weeks ago now, to tell me his dad's final price. He said someone turned up one day and offered him cash on the spot- $420.
A little disappointed.

wow that chassis looks nice and tidy well done!!
looks like you have the reinforcing on the axles like mine too

I'm very happy with how tidy it is.
The reinforced axles are, I think, part of the military specs.
I posted more pics of both here:
