They are a lot quieter, once you get the flapping under control :D
kick butt in summer with the sides rolled up and the door windows up,
you feel like the king of the road and look like one too.
Less weight up top
chicks dig 'em
lap sash belts = stop too fast and you'll become one with the steering wheel, easy fixed, just don't hit stuff at speed
rain, but its not as bad as you'd assume - in some ways they are actually as dry as the hard top. I,ve driven mine many times in heavy rain with no door windows fitted - you do stay dryish.
theiving bastards - if you're poor like me not a problem - just don;t go fitting gps, in car computers etc:D
HOT in summer, real hot - dont know why but it always felt hotter than the hard top, and with no door tops you end up looking like a freakin salseman. (brown right arm, pale and pasty left one)
I dont know what sort of protection the hoops provide in a roll over - but it would be next to nothing. But you'll be less likely to tip with soo much less weight up top.

Phil Stage 1

Some of you might know the Perth Hills / Kalamunda area.
My son borrowed my Stage 1 to get his 80 series down to the exhaust shop in Midland from Kalamunda. He had just fitted a GM 6.5 V8 from Brunswick diesel (big disaster). He didn't have it all working but needed to get the 3" exhaust system installed so he could run it.
He decided to go down Gooseberry Hill Rd instead of Kalamunda Rd hill because there would be less traffic. Gooseberry Hill Rd is twice as steep as Kalamunda Rd. He had it in 1st gear LR all the way down and it held it OK. The trailer brakes on the hired trailer didn't help much. When he got to the bottom he found that the weight of the trailer pushing him down the hill had bent the gooseneck up.
A few days later when he brought it home he came up Kalamunda Rd, down to 2nd gear LR. I was hoping it might straighten the gooseneck out but it didn't.
The Landy has done a couple of rescue missions when my son and his mates got themselves (80 series and GQs) bogged in the bush near Mundaring.

We were just trying them out. No damage done to either vehicle. We tried to go over one log with the Landy first as it has more clearance than the Rubicon. For the Rubicon we put two logs next to each other and made a bridge between with ramps to drive up on. Once on the top the grates supported the weight of the Rubicon no problems.
One thing we found is that once you were on top of the grates you are unable to turn on them, the grip surface is so strong that the grate turns as well! I guess this is so you can use them in sand or mud.
I have another video of the Rubicon. I haven't posted it because it's not a Landy!

The crankhandle is listed as a part for both engines. Although the crankhandle is supplied with the diesel, it is not possible to start a diesel with it (presumably intended for servicing). The 2.25 engine is easy to hand start if properly tuned and in good condition, I can't comment on the six, as I have never owned one, but it is probably just as easy.

you can crank start the diesel, takes a lot of prep work and patients though.
the 6 is just about as easy to crank as the 4 and the early v8s also have the crank boss on them to allow crank starting. I think that was a county only thing though.,

Went and had a look before at the car and it has the hole in the bumper and the adapter on the front of the engine, then I thought, I wonder if that handle behind the seat is the crank handle.... BINGO ;) it fits!
So what is the procedure to start them with the handle ??

I assume you are talking a petrol engine - for the 2.25
Cold. Handbrake on, neutral gear. Prime fuel pump unless you are certain the carburetter is full. choke full out, ignition on.
Insert crankhandle, and engage it into the dog. Grasp the handle with the thumb on the same side as the fingers. Pull until you hit a compression, resetting the dog as necessary, then pull briskly over compression. Repeat if necessary - if it does not fire within five compressions, try putting the choke half in. Failure to fire means it is out of tune.
Hot, same procedure, but use the hand throttle if fitted to give a fast idle, if no hand throttle learn the choke setting that increases the idle without enriching the mixture and use this. Should start first pull if it has just been running.
Never have the thumb opposite the fingers and Never push the crankhandle. Always keep other parts of your body clear, and be aware that if the engine fires before top dead centre (which is quite common!), it will pull the handle out of your hand and if you are not smart in moving it, get your knuckles on the way round. There is also a slight chance that when the engine starts, the dog will not disengage, and spin the crank at high speed.

I used to start my Series III 4 cyl petrol quite often with the crank handle.
Summer was no problem, but when the battery was in its fifth, sixth and even seventh winter, I only had one chance to start on the starter motor. If it didn't start when the first piston reached TDC, the battery didn't have enough power to bring a second piston up.
It rarely took more than one or two pulls on the crank handle to fire up, so I can verify that John's instructions work well and work safely.
If I didn't have the crank handle, a battery that would have been useless after four years could be stretched to seven years.

Same except disregard the bit about priming the fuel pump as it has an electric pump. Because the compressions are closer together, you may need seven compressions starting from cold.

I wonder if it would've tipped without the weight on the roofrack?
hilift, gas bottle, steel roofrack would be a few kg's up there.
Offset wheels - wider track than a standard series too, poo happens.

Just hard luck with wheel placement. front right found a hidden hole at the same time as the rear left caught a high point.
Slow roll - very graceful. :)
Many other taller, more top heavy vehicles went through the same spot with no ill effects.

Hard luck NAAAAAAAA . just playing silly buggers The aim of the day was to take the hardest line possible so i just tried to be a holden stunt driver and ride the top of the rut. unfortunatly as andrew said their is a hidden rut witch doesent apperar is the picture. as i felt it getting close to rolling i put on the gas quickly tured left ad headed down hill on 2 wheels for a bit but had to hit the brakes which led to it tipping , supprisinly not much damage as the roof rack hit the tree first. Truck is now tougher with 33's and a winch and am heading to Jenolean this weekend. what about you Andrew not too far from you! should come for a mud bath.
cheers Will. I would post some more action picts of the series 3 but not sure how too am working on it. Any one keen for a photo upload work shop night aka boose up?

King Edward River on the way in to Mitchell Falls, early in the dry season 1999.
Those cleverly engineered gaps around the doors and the missing bolts from the floor panels let the couple of inches of water around our feet drain out quite quickly.

I have a locked rear diff, a geared LSD in the front and have still been stuck like that before... mind you, all four wheels were deep in the mud like that.
It was easy to pull out with a snatch strap wrapped around a tree connected to a 1600Kg hand winch or "Turfer". Both fit nicely behind the front seats in a 109". Very easy if you have someone sitting inside driving at the same time. Good thing about a hand winch is that you can pull from any angle too.

i wouldn't worry about a paintbrush finish, photos tell lies ...
that one that you see of mine is brushpainted, bodgefilled and rough..
many folks this way either brush or roller paint thier landrovers, many folks that have a really nice spray job done on thier motor then are too scared to drive it on anything but the gentlest of terrain..
the chairman of my local little club has all the gear on his landy, expedition rack, rooftent, jerry cans, spotlights, winch, hilift jack, almost everything for a week/month in the wilds, he won't even come out for some gentle greenlaning and exploring in case he scratches his paintwork or gets a bit of dirt in it...
he's a person for prime mickey taking and every now and then i do

Hi all
Here's a few pics of the 3 on a 2 week trip up the coast we did earlier this year. First shot is from Mount Seaview where we found some pretty good tracks around the area. We camped most nights on the trip and the tub and tailgate on the series were made for it ( seats, a cutting board, lamp holder, clothes line etc). We took Forbes river road through to Wauchope then on up the coast where the last photo was taken on a beach track. Made it back to Tamworth with the only war wounds being a flat and a broken starter motor a week in. We used the crank handle for most starts which worked well. Another bonus of the series vehicles.
