View Full Version : I broke it...Exhaust Outlet Options

A mate and i went out for a play in the Glasshouse Mountains today and had a great day, very wet and slippery though especially running 255/55/18 Wranglers HP's.

After going through most of the day and feeling the new suspension in the D2 works well and making a bad decision I decided to follow the wheel ruts through some holes while my mate rode on the ridges.

Needless to say I ended up sitting in a hole just long enough for the disco, I drove out after a bit of back and forth and a good workout from the V8 but I creased and bent the exhaust and put a stick through the rear bumper.

See pics.

Does anyone have ideas for the rear exhaust and how far do you have to run it back, can you stop just after the diff or possibly run up and outlet through the passenger side rear panel (I am making a steel rear bar so this could be incorporated)

I also ended up with HD, ABS & TC fault lights come on but this ended up being the rear ABS line was disconnected. Plugged back in and all good.

Gee looks like you had some fun.
I've bee wanting to dump my exhaust out the side on the LHS 1/4 panel like you mention. For starters it looks awesome, and it will be well out of the way. Have a look on the Devon4x4 site, they sell a finishing piece for doing this and have pics too.

The only thing is, I don't know how legal it is...in terms of the exhaust having to point downwards in order not to burn pedestrians.

Sorry left hand exits are illegal, just buy a stronger mount for the rear exit, or reroute the pipe to the RHS? And lose the resonator.:)

Hendrik,

I saw those as well, they look good and they sell a D2 rear bar with the side outlet built in.

If I can not legally do a side exit I wouldnt mind dumping it just over the rear diff but I believe that is not legal either.

Failing this I will just run it up high and scallop a section of the steel bar I build to try and get it higher.

Any of the options have to be better than now, I just unbolted the whole tail pipe so it exits mid way down the car now.

So left hand exit is illegal due to pedestrians etc, being on that side of vehicle when on the road.

Does that mean a right hand exit is legal?

I am looking at getting extractors and twin pipes fitted so I can have it routed to the right hand side easily.

Do check your local RTA site, it is quite explicit, and I think it's now national. RH exit after the last opening window, angle is specified too, downwards at least 15 degrees?

Another option could be to route to let it exit in the rear bar itself at the back. I have a pic of an RRC with this set up, looks great. Better than rerouteing it to the RHS in my opinion

Hendrick,

That is a great idea, I had the same thought last night and checked the QLD mod rules and a rear outlet can be between +10 degrees and -45 degrees to the horizontal so it shouldnt be too hard to incorporate.

Being a wagon its got to exit behind the back door...
Mines lost the resonator, tucked up high and just droops then cut off at the bar level. Facing about 45' angle.
