View Full Version : D2 Brake Disk Upgrade?

Recently purchased disco, with all front disks on minimum thickness, and the rears under. Before I go genuine, are there any recommended aftermarket suppliers for disks and pads, particularly if they are an "upgrade" in performance (ie slotted/drilled etc)
I do wish to avoid any run in with the 3 amigos.....

DBA slotted (not cross drilled) with Bendix 4wd pads...
Dont forget to get some anti-squeel paste and use it properly when installing the pads.

Me too. I was going EBC Blue Stuff pads and Britpart Rotors. much advantage to the Slotted rotor?

Yes
Smoother pad wear, improved recovery time when wet..
Firmer bite from pads... Improved fade resistance due to design of venting.
High quality material last ages - I've got rotors on from 80,000km ago.
EBC pads now are rubbish - spongy, soggy braking.. Long gone are the high quality ones that Slunnie and I first had, now their performance is awful.
Stick to local gear - DBA and Bendix - Excellent product, fantastic performance.

I noticed you said "not cross drilled" for the rotors, is there a reason not to go to cross drilled and slotted rotors on a 4wd?
Or dont they make them?
Just curious as I am looking at this upgrade soon.

80000kms doesn't seem all that much. My rotors have never been changed since the car was new, and that was 265k kms and 11yrs ago, and they are still fine. Mine is a manual though so I guess you get a lot more life out of the pads and rotors.

Sorry, ment Black stuff. might rethink that.

My vehicle only has 126,000kms on it
Went and measured to rotors last brake pad change and they are almost original thickness (around 0.8mm off)
I tend to be hard on brakes (auto, oversized tyres, lots of towing, sand and mud work).
I'd suggest that I'll get close to double or more than I have so far... Except the boat etc works them harder than before.

Cross drilled can introduce stress fracturing around the holes, and is total overkill for the LR.
The benefits of the holes is a de-gassing effect, the slots (4 per side) do an ample job of this anyhow.

DBA...
I change/upgrade brakes on my vehicles as a priority..
Slotted rotors, better pads and Braided lines are one of the first things I fit - even to new vehicles ;)

On The brake lines do I need longer lines with a 2 inch lift? where is the best place to get braided lines from?

For a 2" or less you shouldnt need to change anything

I just did the 2" lift on my disco and the brake lines appear ok, although a little tight at full extension.
Make sure you get as much slack in the ABS line as you can though, I have disconnected mine twice now due to articulation. I need to chase the wire back down the chassis to try and get some more slack on the drivers side.
I personally am replacing my brake lines with extended ones, any brake shop should be able to make some lines up, I was quoted $40 - $50 per line supply only.

I'm now running that setup also and very happy with the results. The Dba slot rotors are excellent, much better than the EBC dimple/slot rotors.

Yes absolutely. Don't touch the EBC Greens. These are now 6000 series pads and a totally different and in my opinion significantly worse formulation to the early 2000 series green pad. To be fair, I think EBC may have a yellow pad overseas which I would like to try.
Re 3 amigos, I've not had a problem from EBC or DBA rotors, or EBC or Bendix pads.

I'm running DBA slotted rotors on the front and think they are great, I will soon replace the cheap pads I bought with Bendix, apparently they are the best. When I ordered my slotted rotors from REPCO, DBA offered cross drilled rotors for the same price due to not having slotted rotors in stock, but the man at REPCO said not to bother because if I damage them due to stones or dirt they cannot easily be machined. I will one upgrade to braided lines as well.

Anyone used the RDA slotted rotor? it looks like they just slot the standard rotor. is the DBA sloted rotor any different to the standard apart from the obvios slotting.
cheers

Technically I don't think there is a great deal of difference between the DBA slotted and standard rotors apart from the obvious. DBA say they use a kangaroo paw design on the vented part of the disc to aid with cooling. Maybe the quality of the DBA rotor is better and its made in OZ. Its an easy job to change over, even with basic mechanical knowledge.
Cheers matt:)

According to the dbs catalogue, the disks for the landrover are available in about 3 different "models", including survival, X and 4000 series.
WHich is better, why, what are people using etc.

Good question I need to order mine this week. The RDA slotted rotors are about $100 a set cheaper then the DBA. anyone had experience with the RDA and DBA to make a fair comparison.
I have also read that the slotted rotors are easily damaged by rocks and Mud any truth to this one?
Cheers

The Survivals are for Jeep fitment only and I think just have a really cool name.
The XS are cross drilled. I'd stay away from these as the cross drilling generates stress raisers which cause cracking. I recall having lunch with one of the Dba heavyweights a few years ago at an awards, and he basically said they were for the bling.
The 4000 series have better ventilation, the Wipers are the go here which are a slotted rotor. The slotting is even over the rotor and goes to the edges. I run these and am very happy with them.

I've been running slotteds for years and years and they have never been damaged at all. I also don't running the protective backing plates either. My Disco had done a lot of hard work.

Hi
I have got hold of a set of Green stuff EBC pads front and rear and braided lines. I have been told by a brake shop guy that the RDA and most of the rotor manufacturers use a diamond pattern on the inside of their vented rotors so they are the same as the dba paw pattern. does anyone have any ideas on this?
Cheers matt.

Ordered my DBA rotors today, I can not believe the price difference between retailers and even different repco stores have different prices.
I have been quoted $230 for standard slotted rotors and ended up getting them for $134 for the standard slotted rotor from Supercheap of all places. I don't think my Black top touring and Mild offroad work will justify the 4000's
I have some synthetic Elf Dot 5.1 brake fluid in the shed and was going to use this. This has worked well on other ABS equipped cars. It didn't work in the 505 Gti Pug though. Has anyone tried the 5.1 in their Disco?

Im pretty sure the guru from DBA recommended the survival series for my D2
