banjo

Hey Tony in the first & second pics if you look just under the front tyre of my car the red thing..
Its a 12t hydralic pipe benders , they come with different size dies i think i have about 6 i think from 1/2'' to just under 3''.. they work good just need some practise..Do you want to borrow them there fun as long as you dont try to bend pipe to far as it can still kink..

Wow, nice work Jason. They look very professional. Is welding them to the chassis the best way or, as you said earlier, should crush tubes be added to the chassis first?

banjo
22nd April 2010, 07:04 PM
I prefer to weld them they are stronger but saying that bolting is ok with crush tubes for the rear bracket & they would be better welded in so not sure how use will get on with that as its not an open outrigger like the one in front of that one.. Theres only 1 bolt in the front & its strong enough as i can lift the side of the car at the front using the sliders. There will be between 5 & 7 bolts. i also use the bolts & body steadies that hold the body 1 on the front & 1 on the rear. The little bit of gal steal that goes from the footwell to the edge on the bottom of the front gaurd the other one is on the rear spring outrigger to the bottom edge of the side panal just infront of the rear wheelarch..

Yeah thats where the pipe bender goes , It pushes the pipe onto 2 rollers one on each side of the bend can't do anything about it , Unless you buy one of those super duper fandangle benders that costs $$$$$ ....

To reduce that ding, try a sacrificial bit of half tube the next dia up,simply lay it over where the pin hits ;););););););)

To be honest, if anything, the kink in the bend would be the only thing I think that would be an issue if trying to actually sell them. Personally it doesn't bother me, I think they look absolutely fantastic, but some people may question the bend simply because they don't understand the physics (for lack of a better word) of bending tubes....without a VERY expensive machine.

However, if you got a metal fabricator with the right machine to knock out a crap load of bent pipes for you, and you did the rest, you could be onto a winner. :)

Out of curiosity, how much do they weight, as a set? Just thinking in terms of postage costs if you were to flog them off on eBay or what ever.

Hi Banjo

would you be able to post some pics on how these mount?
I am thinking of making some myself and would like to know where they mount

Also do you need to cut off the mounting brackets for the aluminium panel the sliders replace?

cheers

Did you end up making these to sell? Could you make them up for a SWB?How much? Have you got any pics of them installed?

Nice work, This is pretty much exactly what I was planing for my 109"

A couple of tips for you or anyone who wants to use one of these chinese pipe kinkers... I use one to do everything from bars, roll cages to custom "U" bolts

First off on your two rollers, they are kinking your pipe due to high pressure on a small contact point.... burn some weld either side of the contact point and grind and flap it smooth, turn them into rub blocks

Your dies need a bit of work if it is like mine the castings weren't strong enough or tight enough fitting so as you push for a bigger bend they allow the pipe to spread out at the center of the bend and your bend collapses or kinks.... this was an issue on my dies from Nom 32 up to beat this I clamped the dies in a big vice as tight as I could this closed them up a bit and then welded some scrap off cuts of 6-10mm plate on the bottom of them so they reinforced the die then I spent a free day with a bit of offcut pipe and the flapdisk polishing the inside of the die so the pipe fitted nice and snug
Since then I've never had a bend fail scrutineering for competition

Contrary to what everyone says you can bend tube in these benders, what you need to do is make a sock that fits into the die out of a piece of pipe... I think for the 25mm tube I used a bit of either sch80 Nom 25 or Nom 25 heavy wall... bend it in the die and then cut the bend in half so it leaves you a sock that fits inside the die... with this trick I have bent 25mm tube to 90degrees without any collapse
To find your size of pipe to make a sock you want it to be a bit of a force fit to fit the tube inside (remember you have a seam on some pipe and this will bugger it up a bit, also your dies and rollers need to be done or you kink the tube)

Hope this helps out
