Hi People.
I have a HEAP(12 to 15tonne),of green whitegum(Wandoo) logs to cut up into rings this weekend.
Any ideas of which solvent is good to disolve the gum buildup on the chain.
Have chapps, earmuffs, gloves, eye protection, sunscreen and even a box of condoms incase a cougar sees what she likes.

I know nothing about chainsaws, but I always love a good chain saw thread.

Hi Richard.
Cuts like butter when its green!!!!
We are tree clearing for roadworks and its all getting burnt in bonfires, such a waste.
Will cut this lot up over the weekend and get more next week(another 20 to 25T).
Im buying a hydraulic splitter to chop it up.
It can then dry for a few years.

Daft question time but what is a ring. Wouldn't it be easier to cut to smaller logs so it would be easy to split with an axe..

Hi Jason
you cut a log into rings,or foot blocks for firewood size, then you split it.
Will buy a machine to do the splitting.

Over here, we call logs cut up "rounds".
Mind you, any bit that gets put on a fire is also called a "log".

Thinking of watering the bar oil down 50/50 with diesel so the chain "washes" better.
The gum tends to get hot and burn on the chain.
Logs are very clean so may work.

Yeah, Stihl still haven't learned what really good AV is in their large saws yet

and my 79cc Makita/Dolmar would damn near outcut it, with much better AV and now I have an OE HD air cleaner setup, better air filtration to boot.

BTW Andy, the Dolkita pulls a 30" bar buried to the hilt in dead 'Box too, and is still stock. (be ported in a month or so, and there will be before/after vids ;) )
A mate in SA runs three Dolmar PS7900's, and regularly uses a 32" bar in Red Gum. All his are ported, so he hardly trots out the 3120 now. BTW he's half way through a contract fell, has dropped well over 7,500 trees (Casuarina's ) in the last couple of months with the Dollies.

Oh, forgot to add, track down BobL on some of the chainsaw/woodworking/milling forums.
Damned nice bloke, very smart (he's a boffin like Ben :D ) he's from over your way so knows your timber (his Dad was a faller) and is big time into milling so may know what will work to reduce your sap buildup.

Soak the chain in turps. That works better than kero.

Just finished cutting up and stacking over 10tonnes of Wandoo.Filled the saw up 6 times, sharpened it twice, retensioned the chain once.
The chain looks like brand new,no gum or varnish on the chain or bar.The chain is dry but there is oil visible in the links.Seeing 2 sharpens and 1 tension for the volume of wood cut my new SECRET WANDOO LUBRICANT is a winner:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

I made a 50/50 batch of BP chain and bar oil and Penrite fully synthetic ATF(as I had some on hand).
So impressed Im tempted to try it in dry jarrah.I doubt it would work as its a very dusty/dirty sawdust.

Would recomend the ATF blend to anybody cutting green timber.

BTW, we can buy Caltex bar and chain lube for $60 for 20 litres incl. GST here on the east coast ATM.
That's the cheapest walk in off the street price I've found so far for B&C lube.

I really wanted to use Canola but it needs some tackifier and EP additive to really work properly on longer bars IMO.

LandyAndy
25th April 2010, 08:35 PM
Thats very cheap.
Dont ever get Fuchs.
We had some at work that was way to thick, ended up giving it away.I refused to put it in the shire saws, never mind my own.
Would only empty a third of the oil reservior on full.Usually with the BP C&B oil it works out a tank to a tank of fuel.

If it's too heavy cut it with something like hydraulic fluid.
B&C oil is available in different grades like ISO 100, 150 and 220.
220 would be miles too thick for normal use here, but usually if it's too think they've added too much tackifier. Apparently you don't need much.

The Caltex stuff is roughly equivalent to a heavy SAE30 engine oil before the tackifier is added so should be just about right.

I haven't run any of the Caltex yet, well, sort of, I mixed it with the last of my Dolmar B&C oil (have no idea who makes that) and am running that out ATM.

Going to get the boys to drop me another truckload of wandoo logs off this week, plenty going to waste at the moment.Shame there isnt alot of Jarrah,we took a truck and trailer load to the depot on friday.Jarrah has to be shared amongst the crew, nobody wants the Wandoo. If this splitter Ive got coming is any good it should eat these rings.

I was going to say just wire brush it :D.
Good to see the jungle juice works. Hopefully ATF has lubricating qualities, but I'm sure the bar & chain oil is overkill, so one will balance out the other..;)

ATF seems to be a rather popular part of a LOT of peoples brews, wether it be bar oil or gun oil.......

and DeeJay, ATF has lubricating properties

How far is Williams from Perth?
I looked online and there was nothing that came up that i was looking for ..Serena Williams and Carl Williams were popular but ...is it near Kal?

ATF is an oil, just like Hydraulic fluid is an oil, and most ATF's are rather good oils at that ;)

It's just that they are thinner than B&C oil at around 7cSt @100*C vs 13 cSt or so for B&C oil before the tackifier is added.
And contrary to popular belief, they have bugger all detergents in them, a good petrol and particularly diesel oil have much higher levels of detergent/dispersant additives. Just an FYI :D

Hi Lardy.
Williams is 160km SE of Perth along Albany Hwy.
If you do a google search you need to press the australian search tab.

I'll second that. I use turps to get it off my hands after handling sappy wood.

2 stroke and a paint brush is all I've ever used to clean my saws, I usually soak the chain in the 2 stroke whilst I'm cleaning the saw & bar down. so far so good.
