can you replace the radio in the 95 p38 with a aftermarket one or is it all hooked up to the security system?

i'm sick of the stock one in there, screen doesn't work and now it wont take the code for it to work at all.

The procedure with mine was to phone clarion service centre ( (03) 85581115) who then gave me an account number and contact for freight purposes and I sent it to them for quote. There is a charge for this and I think it was around the $30.00 mark. They rang me next day with total cost quote which ended up being about $120.00 all up including the quote fee and freight both ways and a satchel for any future return if required.
I rang them for the first time on Monday and had my unit back and in the car on the Thursday.
Symptoms were display playing up initially then display going out totally and then the unit would not work at all.

Gday guys,

Yes you can replace the radio with an aftermarket one, and its easy. My radio had the same few problems and i got my hand drill and drilled a hole through it so i would have to organise some other form of entertainment or live with the silence.

To replace the radio, you need to purchase a modulator ( i think thats what its called). if you go to a car stereo place and tell them that you have a amp in every door they will know what to get you. Mine cost me $35.

Get a new head unit, and then wire it up, now there are two plugs, I dont know how technical you are, but with a copy of the Range Rover Workshop manuals and a simple test light i was able to work out all the speaker wires the permanent power etc.

The sound quality was dramatically increased, and with some head units now you can incorporate the steering wheel controls too.

I fitted a pioneer head unit, the only down side is the size of the modulator, and it had to be pushed right to the back of the radio hole of the radio wont fit back in.

Hope this helps a little, If you need more technical details about the plugs let me know.

I recently replaced the screen in mine. The screen was $20 plus post from Clarion.

I'm thinking of buying all their remaining LCD screens and doing repairs on the radios.

For my own car, I have bought a Fusion CA-IP500 iPod Stereo to try out. I picked one up for $100. Rogan put me onto them. I have a couple of spare iPods.

Hopefully I didn't. Although that unit works well, the pins bend and fail after a fair bit of useage.

I thought you mentioned it on the RRNET forum. Sorry if I blamed you. :D

I'm not that interested in anything special, just something more than the CD stacker can carry. I have spare iPods so one can stay in the unit so it doesn't need to be pulled out very often.

Late edit: I found the person to blame! See the first post at http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/64332-ipod-connection-puma.html

You may or not need a modulator depending on your year model there were several levels of stereo and some 4.0's did not have door amps.

Another ripper point is that the plug out of the car harness should be a Euro ISO plug. Companies like Aeropro make packaged harnesses from ISO to most makes of head unit. Costs about $20 and a quick sanity check as you plug it in that the mapping is correct.

Sometimes the power leads are reversed which will work but not allow the memory on the head unit but this is pretty easy to sort out.

The actual replacing the head unit is of no concern to me, just pay the guy, what my problem is that I don't want the "ye olde" P38 console looking like a rave with with multi coloured lights, flashy things and more controls than the space shuttle. Does anyone know of a "subtle" looking unit?.

Zackly! There aren't many, if any.

Oh, I'm too cheap to pay someone to do the install.

The radio I bought has sockets to fit the standard ISO plugs in the car thus making it, for most cars, plug and play.

The sockets don't fit the P38A unfortunately.

Hoewver, the radio also has line level outputs for all channels including the subwoofer so I should be able to use those for the in-door amplifiers.

I recently purchased a VDO Dayton CD 5326X unit from Motor Traders in SA, it has a very restrained front panel, large volume control, NO FLASHING LIGHTS!!! , switchable orange or green illumination, ISO connectors, phone mute, auxiliary input, and it also has a better FM range that any car radio I have ever had. I haven't explored all its functions, but it's sufficiently simple for my wife to manage it.

Is this subtle enough for you Rushy? No flashing lights or fancy LCD displays, just colour coded buttons. You can select source, presets, tracks, volume etc
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

...until you press the correct button, and then you get lots of gadgets to play with
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

a good choice if you "want it all" but don't want the "bling look".

Cheers
Paul.

Can U call in air cover with that?:wasntme::Rolling::Rolling::Rolling:

yeah, that's on the next screen... but it's a two-man action and you've got to use the "red-tooth" connection to request the launch codes :p:p

I read the specs on the Becker Mexico, what a unit, but it is hard to justify the cost and a lot of the features won't work here in Luddite land, when will we ever get RDS.

We do have RDS. Your P38A radio should have it and be able to use it.
