1955 86" restoration 'les'

hey all
been on the forum for a little while, decide its time to start a build up on my beast.

i was given the s1 by my grandfather a few weeks ago, we picked it up from coffs harbour, and had a resonably slow trip back with me on my ls
and the power of a v8 diesel landcruiser which should of had the turbo but it broke :twisted:.

so the golden rule pictures
i shall have them up in the half hour as they are on a different computer

hope you guys enjoy watching this as much as ill enjoy rebuilding it

bulkhead has rust in the footwells under the top rubber and in the gutter where the bonnet mounts. not too bad little bit of patch work will fix it right up

nah ill clean it up then post some up

dropped the oil from engine gearbox and diffs tonight found whats looks to be pieces of a sirclip which is annoying
also found water in the diff oil which i wasnt surprised by
stones in the gearbox aswell which is wierd
pretty much it just cleaning up little bits and pieces nothing substantial

drive shafts are out brakes are all off engine should be out by the weekend, steering arms still to be taken off then off to the sandblaster when i get the money for it and a trailer:mad:

really thats alright. i was looking at a kinchrome one for 130 50 x 50 for the stand and bottom and 6 mm thick mounting plate with adjustable arms

i got an engine stand today $110 1000lbs safe working limit so thats around 450 kgs i think
fairly chunk should be up to the job

I had a master cylinder stainless steel sleeved and rebuilt for $120 (I think) recently. Wheel cylinders would be a little cheaper.

i think that the colours on the block could have changed through the time of the series one i have seen a turquoise colour and a deep green on a series one

great, no scores, no warping, just a bit of carbon build up, ill clean it up in the next few days

Enamel paint is thinned at 60/40 ratio that is 60% paint to 40% thinners.
so 4 litres of enamel paint thinned is the equivalent to about 6 litres of paint ready to spray.
thats heaps to cover both sides.
$240 for paint is about right, enamel comes in 3 grades and the number one is grade one, the very best of paint and long lasting enamel.
the others are good paint graded but suitable for farm machinery and mining equipment subject to abuse under ground and worse.
Yours is only number one, enamel. top grade. (its a series and deserves the very best) ..........bronze green is awsome in the raw so go for it shaunh.
give your beautiful landie a real treat, bronze green, high gloss(grade 1) and more.
your are doing a first class restoration , enjoy every minute and move on to total fulfilment................

Enamel paint is totally different to acrylic as is 2 pac paint with all the subsequent regulations and difficulties.
Enamel was used on all land rover in the 1950's and 60's
acrylic was invented in the 1980's and was the "paint that you never have to polish". bull**** and was proven to be an advertising fart?

take your man in the acrylic paint shop to Berger King and order a burger with bronze green in the fries???????????

acrylic paint is not Enamel , full stop
acrylic is a 2 t part paint that requires buffing and polishing after spraying.
Enamel is a shiny gloss finish from the gun as is 2 pac paint.
You have to establish with your "man" what he is referring to?

All of the bearings, except for the axle bearing for the semi-floating axle, can be found in a good bearing shop - take the race and the bearing in with you and buy good brands such as Timken.

I bought the kits from the mob in Melbourne, but some of the bearings have no brand name on them so I will have to wait and see if they are any good. They had the axle bearing, however, which is good.

For gaskets use Loctite Black Maxx or similar; sparingly used,

As Charlie stated, 4-Wheel Drives in Melbourne carry all the parts you need but a lot are 'no-name' brand.
I recently got a bearing for the diff from them and it was a Timken part with a Bearmach sticker on the box, swivel hub taper roller bearings are no-name.

The problem is some of the sizes are now considered as non-standard so the Land Rover suppliers in the UK (Bearmach, Britpart etc.) get the bearings made in India or China in bulk.
I priced up a set of taper roller wheel bearings, genuine Timken at mates-rates a while ago and they were $300. The no-name brand are $55 the pair including the hub oil seal, lock washer & felt seal.
The no-names are sometimes 'County', not sure where these are made or 'Karsons' which are Indian. Sometimes there are no boxes so who knows where they are made.

A couple of things to consider are :-
Just because they are no-name doesn't mean they are automatically rubbish.
How many Kms per year will you be doing in the finished vehicle ?


If you want I can check out which of the diff bearings are a name brand when I'm next at 4 Wheel Drives.

Just to give a background to some of the other comments in the above thread...... A lot of people are very critical of 4-Wheel Drives but I haven't had any major issues, if I have had a problem they have always been quick to resolve it but ......I am a regular personal shopper.
The staff have changed there significantly in recent years, Anda is in the background running a separate operation (same building) selling soap, towels & crystals, Jim runs the Land Rover side of the business.

Quality is no different to most other Australian suppliers, in fact I know that they actually supply some of them. Most stuff nowadays is Bearmach or Britpart.

They have quite a stash of secondhand parts.

BTW , vintage wiring harnesses are made here not oll blighty ...used to be up north but now in victoria and standard with blinker wiring i beleave, ive one on the 86 put in by the previous owner...

the motor is finally finished coming in at 3200 dollars im rather satisfied, came in way under what i though it was going to be now just to fix all the ancillaries

not too much, bearings seals cylinder bores were honed pistons are all okay, valve seats hardened new valves spings and all that stuff,
local bloke in lismore did it not too sure of the exact name of the shop
hes had the motor for almost 2 and a half years

its a 55 107 ute back, will be destined for parts, ill keep what i want and sell the bits i dont want, chassis is very far gone, motor seized but ancillaries should be good enough for rebuilding

Had a win today, got some good second hand springs, fuel tank funnel, horn button and surround and a few other cooling parts so waiting on my brake lines to arrive fit them and then the progress will speed up or at least I hope

got the leaf springs done and in with new bushes, ordered new brake shoes spring set steel lines flexy lines all arrived now to fit all those this week, drums to be machined hopefully this week,

weather has not been favorable so not much has happened unfortunatly
shoes springs and cylinders have all been installed lines have arrived and are almost ready to be put on need to fix my sanblaster and clean all the brackets up but has been too cold to paint so i havent bothered
engine has been rebuilt onto the bolt on bits now
