Rear Axle Seal

Hi All,
Had my 100, 000kms service done. No big worries. However, l had the rear axle seal done and it is already leaking again - only 1000kms of driving.
My thoughts
1. Bent axle (un-luikely)
2. Pressurised diff b/c of blocked diff breathers (more likely)

Any other thoughts?

I am keep an eye on it - leaking enough that it is covering the inside of the wheel with diff oil.

Hmmm. Is that possible though?

I provided them with the seal from Rover Parts Plus in Ballarat. Mechanic said it was the wrong seal and they bought a new one from BJ Bearings in town here? (Which l did find strange)

do you know the part number for the seal you supplied and what landy is it going into?

Hi there,
It is a TD5 Defender (2006).
Part Number STC4401.

Had to replace the rear wheel bearing (same side) also. The whole wheel was wobbling!! Surprised it hadn't fallen off really!
And the rear pinion seal.

If the rear wheel was wobbling it may have damaged the stub axle?Which means the seal will not seat properly causing it to leak.

But would think they would have noticed if the stub axle was damaged.I would start with the diff breather to make sure its not blocked and go from there.

The newer seal has a double lip.
Did you seat it 4mm in, if not I have a tool for the job.

My guess is that at some time it has been converted from greased bearings to oil fed - otherwise the diff oil would have been stopped at the axle oil seal on the inside of the stub axle. And if my guess is correct then the axle oil seal referred to above would have been removed and the original grease wiper on the inside of the hub should have been replaced with a double lipped oil seal (P/N RTC3554 ...... IIRC).

Your mechanic may have refitted one of the grease wipers instead of the double lipped oil seal.

Also, as pointed out in previous post, the stud axle where the seal runs also needs to be in good condition.

THanks for the replies. Quite helpful. As for the stub axle - l would have though if it were damaged i would expect my mechanic to say something or replace. I did have to replace the axle flange for the same side. It was worn inside???
