I have an Icom IC440 that can be tuned to receive-only channels between 450 and 520 Mhz.

Has anyone with an Icom bothered with this functionality?

I've "read" the manual and it is as clear as mud. I think that it won't scan and that you need to set the channel/frequency that you want to receive.

Is there any benefit in exploring this?

I have the IC-440 but haven't even bothered to looked in to this. Some of the GME's also have this ability.

all of the GME's are programmable via laptop and programming cable, the icom IC400 is the same, and i expect the IC400 is no different

Apparently the IC-440 can be programmed on the unit in both wide and narrow bands without having software and hardware.

Who inhabits those areas of the spectrum who might be worth listening to?

Thanks for the link.

Whilst having a look around I also came across this useful site:
