View Full Version : Most ridiculous price for a part from LR?

Given that the ignition barrel assembly is now in the end stages on my Discovery 1 (takes a real art to get the key to turn, but I'm starting to master it), I decided to at least call a nearby Land Rover Service Department for a price for a new igntion assembly...
Now, I knew it would probably make me want to cry, but I think I more choked!! $1100 plus GST supply only ($1210 inc). Ouch
So off home I go and do my research. Brand new OEM Valeo unit from Paddocks, coming to my door for just under 35 pounds, all inclusive, so about $70 aus. LR must just really not get it.
Anyway, it got me thinking... what is the most ridiculous price you've been quoted from a LR service dept, and what did you end up paying through a non-affiliated supplier?

$450 excluding switch for the dashboard wiring assy for fog lights.
Wired it myself and put another switch in a different place on the dash.

£1250 for the Y section with cats for my Discovery 1, and thats in the UK, paid £165 from an online exhaust supplier and fitted it myself :D
As a general answer, where do you start, recommend Paddocks though, good outfit.

R12500 (Rand) so give or take $2000 to replace the climate control unit in my old D2 when all it required to fix the problem was a R10 (less than $2) bulb and two butter knives to fix the problem.......
What was (perhpas not so) funny about the story, was that when the LR dealer thought I was paying, he quoted the R12500, when I informed him that the vehicle was recently bought from used car dealer affiliated with his dealership and that he would be replacing it under warranty, suddenly the R10 fix was found..... never dealt with them again......

That must speak volumes about the Dealer, perhaps a call to Landrover SA would have been appropiate (bit late now I imagine)

When the tape player in my Defender died I thought it would be good to replace it with the factory CD (Eurovox) unit that was standard from '03 (yes I know what was I thinking - keeping things original maybe...)
Anyhow after being quoted $1300 I went and bought a much better one for $150.

If I had thought it would make one ounce of difference I would have, but sadly the worst thing about LRs in South Africa is the dealers.
There was a lot of discussion on this, about this dealer, on a thread I started at the time on a SA LR Forum. In the end I only got any joy because I stumbled on the dealer principal's email address and would email him the thread daily. Sadly he just didn't care what we as LR owners thought of him and his dealership.....
Anyway, this is why independant guys like Jim and Brian at Landyonline Jo'burg do so well for themselves.

I have to say that having owned Land Rovers in the UK, South Africa and now Australia, the Southern hemisphere dealers have a lot to learn from their Northern counterparts.
That said, there are some good ones here in Oz...... Bruce Lynton in Southport for argument sake...... so far so good in my book...... won't comment on the two Sydney dealers I have used.......

A hazard switch for an 88 county was about $220. I bought a 9 pound one and a whole bunch of other impulse buy bits includng a pair of side mirrors and still didn't break $200 including shipping.

I was after the little plastic slider which sits in the window channel for the regulator...a tiny piece of simple plastic. I explained that everything else was in perfect working order, it was just the plastic which broke. They said it was common and I had to buy a whole new regulator assembly. At $253.50 ("a special price to help me out" according to the guy), hmmmm, I think not! If they know it's such a common issue, why not just have the part that they know screws up, rather than deliberately fleece the customer for the entire thing? Geez that's one of my pet-hates!
If I can't find one at the wreckers, I'll just buy some plastic and make one up myself for less than $5. :p

It used to be commonkly said that a $20,000 Commodre (those were the days), if made from the dealer parts catalogue would cost over $100,000.
I reckon a $50,000 Defender, if made from the RRp of the parts cataloguie would come i somewhere around the .... shedloads ! mark.

That was not uncommon amongst US LR dealers I understand from the P38A owners on the RRNET forum.
I put up an article on the RRNET main site on how to change the bulbs in a P38A.

No, please do comment, is it protocol not to mention a dealers name if you had poor service from them, the whole idea of a forum is to help others who share an interest, so if you have a story do tell.
Having a classic Range Rover I did not use the dealer network, but being a member of the RRC of NSW, if a member got some shoddy service it would find its way around the club, I heard that for service in general, Garthons in Hurstville are/were very good, are they still there?
I used Graeme Cooper myself, but bought the RR from the then John Davis Motorworks and was pleased with both.

Was quoted locally for a front Fog Light on my D3 $613 and 2 to 3 weeks delivery. Emailed a dealer in the UK, delivered in 5 days for about $119 including delivery. Same LR part number.

Don't be offensive!
why the self censorship
Because it can land the forum owner in expensive legal action.

It'd be great if a dealer read this, let alone sponsor it!!!
It's got something more to do with defamation and keeping the site safe against any possible legal action. Slagging off a company on a public forum may not be wise, and I don't think Dave (Incisor) needs to be open to any possible action, hence the no negative comments rule!

Welcome to the Nanny-State...aka Victoria. So much for free-speech and a fine example of why I can't wait to escape this political n moral prison! The establishment I dealt with were smug, arrogant, clearly ripping the customer off, and neglected to reply to enquiries regarding to vehicle purchases, parts to accessories. As they are a MAJOR marque representative, is it not fair that fellow Landy owners who will at some stage deal with them, be aware of their practices and decide for themselves?

I'm sorry, but for those who have served the industry wrong, they deserve the shame and punishment... My comments pertain to a separate business to my last comment, but if there is proof of undeniable substance and presents a legal and safety issue to the public, does this still quantify as suppressible for fear of repercussion? I could easily name such a firm, but cannot in here... :wasntme:

If there is such proof, here isn't the place to go naming and shaming, I'm sure this business has a professional body overseeing them who will gladly listen to any complaint against one of their members and look into it appropriately and revoke accrediation to do whatever it is they do.
Lets take a doctor for example, you wouldn't name and shame them here and tell people not to go to them, you report them to the Aus Medical Association who licenses them to practice, they have their license revoked or suspended after your claim is investigated. Every industry and profession has a body that over-sees them.

Hence why I have bitten my tongue mate...it's not something I enjoy doing, esp given how it can affect others. It's an independent and won't break protocol though if that's what's worrying you...having said that, I'd like to give a big kudos to Les Richmond, and SASS for such awesome, efficient and dedicated service. I'm a firm believer in giving credit where it's due... ;)

The reasons I didn't comment were for exactly the reasons P38 said.... Also in the spirit of keeping things positive, I make sure to mention when I get good service. If people really want to know, feel free to email me.

That said, surely any opinions expressed here are those of the members, and not the forum. Is there not a disclaimer in the Forum T&Cs somewhere to that effect?
