View Full Version : Are TD5's the noisiest diesel engines ever?

SWMBO told me the other day she gets embarrassed sometimes driving the Disco (04-td5) because its soo loud. :wheelchair:
I agree it is probably one of the loudest stock diesel engines out there.
I took the acoustic cover off the motor a few days ago and there's not that much difference really on the inside either.
You guys rate it as up there with the loudest??

You think that's loud? Replace the middle silencer box with a straight-through pipe and then we'll talk - children will run away in tears when you put foot

Yep that direct injection is loud. My SWIMBO gets a bit embarrassed too. I think it sounds like a real truck not a Toyo and is part of the appeal to me. The acoustic cover rattles way too much at some revs, not sure how to fix that.

My mates Defender TD5 is quiet comparing it to a Series 3 Stage 1 3.9D that I once owned and I had special soundproofing put in the engine bay including the firewall. My present 300TDI is not to bad in the noise department either

Try a Series 3 Stage 1 with Isuzu - compared to that the TD5 is dead silent. It is also very quiet compared to the Series 1/2/2a/3 Rover diesel, or even the Tdi 200 or Tdi 300.

No, TD5s are a long way from the noisiest diesel ever.

First drive of my '85 Isuzu, not much muffler, driving into a friends property.

They could hear from 8km away.

Not really a surprise visit.

best test is how fast you can go and still hold a conversation without shouting.....

i believe the average isuzu is good for 60-70km/h.......

By "loud" are we talking exhaust note loud or diesel rattle loud ?

If we're talking diesel rattle loud, then I think that the Isuzu 4 cylinder diesels in Rodeos and similar leave the TD5 for dead. And there's a lot of Nissan Patrol diesels around that make a racket taking off from the lights as well.

Before I bought the first Disco, I had an imported Ford Ranger (the yank spec F100, not the re-badged Mazda). It had a Chev 6.2 V8 diesel in it - now that was loud, both for the diesel rattle and the thumping V8 note out the back.

I tend to find that after a trip of any length with a passenger I end up with a sore throat......... and when ordering in the McDonalds drive through, I have to switch off the engine.

If it's diesel rattle then surely the Mitsu's, both Pajero's and Trytoos from the last couple of years take the cake.
You can hear some of them from half a block away, at least the first of the new DI engines. A TD5 is silent in comparison.

As for exhaust note, my Tdi is embarrassing, I really must build a quieter muffler, I don't know how I drove it for a month or so without any silencing at all

My mate has a 08 diesel patrol too,,

you can hold a whispered conversation in the front seats at 100 kph towing a 3t trailer----

it was 1.30am inbetween Gundy and Moree and the pair in the back were sleeping.

yes it is THAT quiet,,,

Embarrassed because its too loud, the louder the better I think, the pedestrians will know you're coming...so its a matter of safety I think :p

I get a headache just thinking about the noise the Isuzu makes.

My mates loves it and must be used to it but he does suffer some(lots) industrial deafness.

My dog does not even get up to check as he is used to the noise, its comparable to the bin contractors truck.:p

At highway speeds the td5 can't even be heard over everything else. Its when you pull up at a campsite late at night that i notice the td5 rattle and try to position the van as quickly as possible and shut her down.

Interesting you say that!

Mate flew to Sydney for the masters games and hired a Prius...

His comments about it being quiet and unusual to drive also came with this:

"When in a carpark or shopping centre be extra careful, the <expletive> pedestrians dont look and because they cant hear you just step straight out"

Apparently he nearly cleaned up close to a dozen people who didnt hear him coming and they werent looking.

Perhaps cars will be legislated to emit a minimum amount of noise, louder at aged pedestrian crossings. Prius's could have a loud speaker attatched making a noise like a duck, that would do. And ban pedestrians using ear buds with their I-pods, ie make it a no blame if you run over a pedestrian using them.

I disagree, no matter what happens in a Prius - its the drivers fault;)

The Td5 I'm working on at the moment has a very loud vibration from the plastic cover over the oil filler cap, make the car sound even worse. Check it..

Mine does that ! Very noticeable at idle with the bonnet up ... at speed don't notice it.

IMHO the Td5 is not noisy ... well, I don't think mine is anyway.

Firstly...missus complaining about the landy.....time for a new missus . Secondly.......what's a woman driving a man's car to start with...next they will be wanting equal rights ;). These pansies who buy D2's and D3's for the better half to drive around in need their pants pulled down and given a kick up the date . Get em a girls car like an FL2 or a Territory....leave the manly car to the men :D.

Having come from a V8 D3.....I loved the fact that I can hear the TD5.....gave me a wee woody. I used to stand there with the V8 and people would go " Hey Stevo...is that on ?" :(. With window's up can hardly heard the good ol rattle. Loud or not I do not know....all I know is I love the sound of it......especially in tunnels :),

Come for a ride in my series 111 stage 1 Isuzu. Your eardrums will bleed, and your knuckles start dragging on the ground. Puts a smile on the wife's face at idle though:angel:

I call my car the camo tractor, for two reasons: 1, its as slow as a tractor and 2, its as loud as a tractor. I run the the 300tdi with straight out factory pipes, 2.25" i believe. As much as I love the sound of the rover V8's, I also love the sound of both the 300tdi motor and exhaust.

(I also love smoking peds in car parks on the massive black startup puff heheheheh)

But even as loud as it is, it is still easy to hold a normal conversation at 100kmh, 1650 odd rpm . (33's on 4.1diffs)

However, my wife HATES the car, she wont even go in it haha.

Distinctive and unique, you bet.

If you want loud, try driving a 300Tdi without the cover over the gearbox. :p

I did that briefly after some work on the gearbox to give me one last chance to check for oil leaks and so on.

I had done it a few times before on the 4cyl petrol Series III and the loudest noise was the whining of the gears.

In the 300Tdi, the noise from the engine was unimaginable loud. That sound deadening material on the underside of the gearbox cover must be pretty good stuff. :D

Dad had a RA (?) Rodeo with the 2.8L Turbo diesel (non intercooled). Can you say rattle ?? It was a distinctive sound, just like a Td5 is distinctive ... we can pick the 2.8 just from the sound it makes...

Now he's got an Isuzu D-Max with the 3.0TDI ... what a beast! ... it doesn't rattle or sound anything like the older 2.8. It's a pretty sweet engine and goes like a stung pig!!

You blokes don't know what noisy is! When I was a kid, most of the trucks in the area were 3 cylinder Commer diesels. They were known as "knockers", and not because they were nice to look at! They really were noisy.

Hey mate, 001.MOV is with it ending before the first muffler (just unbolted) like benny said, and yeah the other video is with the rear res out and the middle one in. I plan on getting a straight through bit of pipe made to bolt in and out in the centre so i can have loud when i have the 33's on and quiet on the standard sized at's :)

Here's some video from today having a wheel with it taken off before the first muffler
