View Full Version : Perhaps I'm a tard...

While working on my Disco today, it dawned on me that I need another project vehicle.

Here's the long story cut short...the Disco was bought as a tourer and tough daily driver, and a mate n I have sideline plans to do an overseas expedition. The expedition wouldn't be for a few years anyway, and the Disco is nearing completion if it was to fulfill it's original purpose. Only things like tyres, a 2" lift and other minor inexpensive things would remain.

I've always fancied the Defenders, want one to join the stable, and have been giving it some serious thought. To make matters worse, I've seen some amazing buildups being done by some of you and others which has only served to tease me. That County V8 buildup certainly got my interest! ;)

I'm leaning very heavily towards starting from a new bare galvanised chassis, and building one up exactly as I want. Sound a tad crazy? I have done car restorations before (personally and professionally), so it's fair to say that I'm not afraid of a challenge.

Anyway, I'm wondering what's involved for certification of the chassis so that the vehicle can be registered...in either Vic or NT. Is such a job overly ambitious, not worth it, full of dramas, etc? I realise that the easy option is to buy a decent Defender and go from there, but that would put me again in the same dilemma as the Disco. I'd really welcome all feedback so I can get a clearer picture in my head of what decision to make. :)

Look ya dill .......there is only one life ...live it !!!
You are going along talking yourself into it anyway, I reckon it would be interesting to knock up a 110 twin cab and ute-age (the littletwin cab job)
I reckon the way to get round some of your hassles would be to get a Chassis registered as you suggested, W.A. being tard central I think it would be hard as, unless you were to utilise an old defender as a donor and do it sneaky stylie.
I would be interested to see how it works out for ya

I think you should go for it. But use a 130 as a starting chasis. Especially if you want to tour the world, you can pile a great load of gear into a 130, and still carry the kids to boot!
