Hi guys...
have been trying to figure out what auto this will have fitted?
Can't find any info on a 1980 model having an Auto?
Everywhere I checked says 83 on had 727? then later borg warner.
Looking to fit Auto to a Stage one series 3 v8 ute, and figure the best way is to buy whole car...

Seems early for an auto. If factory be likey a 727. It will drown the 3.5 a bit but very strong. The earlier BW35 is also 3 spd but lighter and less resource hungry.
Can you ask the seller for a pic of the shifter position?

if you can get the VIN, it will tell you. The 9th digit should be a "3" (727, 3 speed auto IIRC)

It will likely be BW35 or C4, both 3 speeds, a pic of the shifter and its position will tell you, I think slunnie has a thread with some pics:)

From what I remember, specialist landie shops were putting in autos in RR for a few years before the factory item was produced. I am not sure what boxes were used.
They were all LT95 based and either cut the gearbox off the tfr case and connected the auto to the LT95 tfr case or took the innards out of the LT95 gearbox and put the auto box inside the gutted LT95 box casing.

The machined down case was to fit the C4 (C9) and the auto inside the whole gearbag was the BW35, the C4 is a nice conversion for the day, the BW35 is junk let alone with such an ugly conversion

I think the early, pre factory versions used the Chrysler TorqueFlite gearbox but I cannot remember.

Prior to the ZF, from 83ish to 85 they were 727 TF, fitted with LT230 transfer case

GarryThere was an after-market conversion done in Sydney during the early-1980's pre- the OEM Torqueflyte 727 vehicles.
The LT95 had the gearbox gearset removed, the case machined down and an adapter re-fixed to the transfer box part of the LT95 to accept the BW35 box. The vehicles were sold through a number of dealers and carried a dealer warranty on the car in place of the JRA warranty. This conversion did not use the Ford or any other auto and stopped production when the TF727/LT230 became available.

G'day Folks :)
It might be a Shuler Auto, one of the 25 built in 1980,there are/were at least 2 in Australia, Shane Portious had one, they hada 727 Torqueflite 3 speed coupled to a Shuler-Voith chain driven transfer box, and also fitted with Ferguson Formula anti-skid brakes they were built by Shuler Presses of Sunnindale Berkshire which later became Overfinch.
If it is a Shuler it is a very rare vehicle, they had a small plate on the lower dash explaining the transmission.
Can't remember what colour Shane's was but it may have been white, it featured in the opening shots of "A Country Practice" in the early 80's.
cheers

Hi,
Bought an 81 RRC with the Ritters C4/9 chopped LT95 combo fitted for other parts. Came with a BW35 stuffed inside a whole LT95 as a spare. The engineering differences are chalk and cheese. Ritters is all class, BW is crude. BW has the LT95 moved back over 6", custom driveshafts as a result (went to scrap a couple of weeks ago) etc.
The C4 combo now sits happily behind a 350 in my POS. Matt's driven it, be interesting to have his thoughts.
Noel from Ritter's was around when they were doing these conversions (along with aftermarket aircon) and said to me that it was a LR oz option at the time.
cheers, DL

Yea, I've taken it for a spin, quite pleasant driving with the chev and C4, and a nice strong compact auto they are
BW35 on the other hand, spawn of the devil:twisted:
