Hi all,

i have a question regarding an oil leak i have comming from the rear of the sump, dripping along the back of the bell housing. I am suspecting its the seals of the main bearing.

The question i have is will the leak from the main bearing seals pass through the bell housing and out the wadding plug hole ?

oil is leaking from the wadding plug hole too.

Dont feel like taking the box out for a rear oil seal.

any suggestions appreciated

thanks

Hi Stefan,
i had the exact same thing on my 300tdi with 55000km on the clock, It was a combination of a leak on the sump as wellas the rear crank seal. The sump was easy and took about an hour or so but the rear seal is a pain. You have to stip off the gearbox and transfer case( the easy bit ) and then try and remove your fly wheel without snapping the bolts off. It was a huge job for me (dont have the right tools) but got it done in a day.
While its open I also put in a new clutch pressureplate and thrust bearing as wellas an uprated clutch fork. You may need to have the fly wheel skimmed as well.
Hope this helps

Can be a few things

The sump seal as already said. Or the rocker cover seal where it leaks from the rocker cover down the block of the engine and comes out where you see it by the sump

The rear main oil seal almost always comes out of the Wading plug hole on the bell houseing . Cheap part pain the ar*e to fit and expensive

Try putting in that Oil seal refresh into the Oil of the engine, have know that to work on the rear main oil seal . But will only last about 6 months before you have to do it again
